This happened this morning 20 minutes from my hometown.

This is sick and disgusting. What is it going to take to institute harsher gun control? Columbine, Virginia Tech, the theater shootings in Colorado and now Newtown, CT and so many more. My thoughts go out to the families and victims of this tragedy.

Absolutely disgusting...  Why does this fucking bullshit keep happening?? As someone who lives in Colorado, I remember VERY well Columbine in '99, and the Aurora movie shooting, as well as VA Tech, and of course we've just had that Oregon mall shooting and now this.. Thoughts and prayers for the victims and their families...just awful!

Another reminder there are serious issues still needing to be addressed in the world, and so sad for America going through another tragedy.

An awful thing to happen for those involved and their families, and even more so to hang a dark cloud over what should be a nice build up to Christmas.

Very sad indeed - hope all our American CBn'ers stay safe, and no-one is affected by this tragedy.

It bothers me especially as my wife is a teacher and I have a daughter in school. I remember when this used to be an isolated thing or something so out of the ordinary and we've had 2 in the span of a few days. It's enough to make you paranoid, looking over your shoulder all the time.

I don't know that it's about stricter gun laws as people who want firearms can get them through any number of means, legal or illegal. It's the unbalanced people who would use them for this type of end that frightens me.

Why are all these shootings happening? I mean these used to be isolated incidences but now it seems like they happen every couple of months. And these are elementary school kids! This is awful. I mean these kids are only 8 years old and it makes me sick. These kids haven't even had a chance to live their life. I love children and this is awful and I honestly feel sick. I am disgusted with this world and the people in it. Violence happens all the time and it's sad that violence is such a regular thing in our society.

Something seems fishy, I swear these idiots are trying to out do each other for largest mass shooting in history. Top two this year, the first one at the theater in Aurora was 20 minutes from me, like this 2nd was from you seawolfnyy.

That's not it. There is something fundamentally wrong with these people and instead of getting the help they need they respond by taking it out on children, public servants, movie goers just people that have nothing to do with them.

Dreadful news. It reminded me of the mass murder in Dunblane, Scotland in 1996 - a gunman, an elementary class (primary class we call it here) and a teacher and small children killed.

I am so sorry for the victims and their families, and I am at a loss as to why anyone would want to carry out such an attack on innocent people.

That's terrible. I can't understand it. I couldn't even bring myself to read the names of those who were killed. My friend did and told me how horrible it was seeing the birth dates of the children in 2005 and 2006.

This is sick. Absolutely sick. These people claim that they're "depressed" and their "life sucks," so they decide to kill innocent children? Society...

My heart goes out to the families, and I am keeping them in my prayers.

I guess it´s more complex than that, though.

From what one can read, the killer was suffering from a form of autism - and he used the guns of his mother. He killed her first, then went to the class his mother was teaching.

Although all these "details" may be misleading or not even accurate, one can suspect that behind the tragedy is another tragedy.

This is not to say that the killer´s deeds can be justified in any way.

But unless we understand why people actually go crazy to kill the innocent, our society will never be able to solve this problem.

I find it extremely sad that those who oppose gun control always point to the second amendment in these cases. Or that they want to justify the ownership of guns with the argument that not owning guns would not stop such shootings.

Fact: if you don´t have access to a gun you won´t be able to shoot someone. Fact: If you want to go crazy, you can do it with other weapons, even simple knives. Fact: someone running around with knives will not be able to kill so many people.

The right of a 6 year old girl to be able to attend school in safety completely outweighs the right of the ordinary citizen to own automatic firearms in my opinion. If this isn't a fork in the road for the American public, if this isn't enough to make them change their ideas regarding the ownership of guns, then nothing will ever change there.

I agree with both completely. How many more of these do we need to have before we finally talk about gun control in this country (the U.S.)? When the 2nd amendment was created, people were using flintlocks and front loading muskets. Not semi automatic handguns and military grade assault rifles. On top of that, it says that the people have the right to well regulated militia. A WELL REGULATED militia. This means laws and restrictions and regulations, not allowing every dimwit in the country to buy a gun. It makes me sick to think that when 20 young children are murdered, the first thought that some people can have is "oh no, the government is going to take my gun away."
