My interest piqued by the lastest image from "Skyfall," of Bond sitting in thought in the National Gallery, I identified the painting behind him, which is by Gainsborough. On the gallery web site, I took the 360 tour. The painting Bond appears to be glued to is "Ulysses deriding Polyphemus - Homer's Odyssey" by Joseph Mallord William Turner. The tag next to the painting on the web site says, "Ulysses is standing aloft on his ship deriding the Cyclops, whom he and his companions have just left blinded, and invoking the vengeance of Neptune. One of the flags is painted with the scene of the Trojan Horse. The horses of the Sun are rising above the horizon." Don't know who the Cyclops is, but one can surmise "Ulysses and his companions" would be MI6.

Anyone have other theories? I realize this is piddling, but it's Saturday morning and I have a migraine, so I'm looking froa diversion.

Clever train of thought there!

I would have guessed Bond was looking at the doorway. I wouldn't have thought about the 360 tour.

The cyclops in the story was just blinded, which could be an allegory for the state of Britain/London or the SIS in the course of SKYFALL.

EDIT: see the painting here

No theories, but very cool that one of my favourite paintings is over Bond's right shoulder: An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump by Joseph Wright of Derby. One of the greatest examples of Wright's genius at painting light.

Haha. No problem really. The comment was meant to have more substance but I was leaving the door as I posted. Just came off like me being a defensive prick instead. What I meant to say was I commented on this yesterday and find it also interesting that the entire room is devoted to British artists. It's not only what he's looking at but what is all around him; a lot of quintessential British works.

The 'cyclops' could b the 'big eye' that was featured in 'Quantum', when all the enemy agents met @ the Opera which Bond himself was present. Mr.White n Mr.Greene was also there discussing their latest project, when Bond interupted them all w/ their own hidden mic/earphone. Suddenly, every agent got up n left, n Bond took pics of all that he could.

I doubt he was looking at anything per se, just a blank stare while being immersed deep in thought.

Sort of like me when I'm in the office.
