So, in the itnerests of keeping other threads on-topic, what are your thoughts regarding the confirmed locations?

We know that China, Turkey and Scotland are all in - and while we know that production withdrew from India, we also know that South Africa was being lined up for the film, but there was no official word at the conference.

Your thoughts?

I don't have a problem with any of the locations, although they don't really seem that... exotic. Hopefully South Africa will be confirmed. :D

Maybe they're still finalising of what to do with the ditched scenes from India, and where they'll be shot. That's my best guess at this stage.

Was there any detail about where exactly in China they're likely to be filming?

Really? China and Turkey are both very exotic indeed. To me, at least.

China has never really appealed to me as a location, I have no idea why. I guess I could find Turkey beautiful.

I don't really have much of a problem with any of the locations. With Turkey I just kind of hope they'll be filming some stuff away from Istanbul. It's a big city, sure, but we've been there twice. Why not Trabzon or Ankara or any other Turkish cities I don't know the names of? Really though if 90% of the film were shot in Istanbul I wouldn't complain. All sound locations.

Are they using Shanghai? Kinda been done in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III, no?

There are plenty of Chinese cities. I don't understand why Beijing and Shanghai seem to be the only ones that are ever used in Hollywood films. I'd be far more intrigued if SKYFALL were filming in Dalian, Qingdao, Tianjin or somewhere that would seem a bit fresher to cinemagoers' eyes.

It's an interesting mix of locations. Turkey accounts for the PTS. Probably nothing more. And the climax will occur at the house in Scotland. So maybe it will be something like this:

PTS - Turkey
(Titles)
Act I - MI6 / South Africa
Act II - China
Act III - Scotland

Pure guesswork, but there you are.

Thrilled about Shanghai, should be very cool. I'm really just curious to find out whether the production will in fact move the India scenes to South Africa. The other big revelation during the conference was the production budget. Quantum had a very hefty budget and a great many more locales. This bodes well for the scope of the picture.

Personally I'm thrilled at the prospect that we're going to be getting a 50th anniversary Bond finale set in the character's country of birth.

I think the official biography for Craig's reimagined Bond gives his birthplace as West Germany, possibly at an airbase.

Had a quick search. The CASINO ROYALE dossier suggests: "Born: West Berlin, Germany, 13 April, 1968". Although I've been the producers have already forgotten that!

Check out the press con transript on Empire. Mendes more or less said that it's not Bond's roots.

On another thread, it was suggested that the roots to be explored and the SkyFall location will have to do with M, not Bond. I'm guessing this might be accurate.

My big concern about all of this is the way China is going to be handled. If the Indians were meddlesome, trying to get the scenes changed to "better portray" India (essentially making it into one big commercial), the Chinese can take it to ridiculous extremes. If China is not depicted as a universal force for good, then the cast and crew will probably be banned from entering China ever again. We've already seen EON play hardball with New Delhi over the issue, so I'd hate to see them turn around and bow to Beijing's demands.

I'd like to think Eon will be fairly robust in its dealings with China. I'd be very surprised if China was their last resort as a location. Hopefully the authorities are actually being helpful; in recent years it's seemed that the country's opening up to the idea of western movies being shot in the country (MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3, THE KITE RUNNER, etc.) Admittedly, we'll have to wait and see though.

I admit I was surprised when MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 managed it, mostly because the Rabbit's Foot was implied to be a devastating superweapon developed by the Chinese. I suppose they won't mind too much if Bond does it, provided the script avoids criticsing the government, or treating Tibet and/or Taiwan as separate states.

For many reasons, I suspect China will be a back drop only, with no politics mixed in so as to avoid all these problems. AFter all, they already faced these issues when attempting to get into Vietnam to film TND.

The locations sound great to me. Turkey and China have beautiful scenery and cities, and Scotland is spectacular too. Looking forward to seeing these in the movie, that's for sure.

Good news, everybody!

http://www.bbc.co.uk...t-arts-15579556

According to Michael G. Wilson, SKYFALL has not had any significant changes to its script, so the scenes that were planned for India may well have been relocated:

Producer Michael G Wilson said the budget was "in the same range" as 2008's Quantum of Solace, which is estimated at $200m (£125m).

"We haven't had to change anything in the script to get what we want," he said. "In fact we keep on adding."

Now, raise your hand if you read this post in Professor Farnsworth's voice.

I'm not convinced it was ever actually in to begin with. After all, Mendes didn't name it as a location at the press conference, and given the enthusiasm for the project that the South Africans were showing, it would not have been difficult to secure filming permits in the two months since India was dropped. I suspect that when it was scouted for possible appearances, South Africa was intended to double for India all along, because the producers would know that the Indians can be difficult. But when they decided to abandon India, they abandoned South Africa in the process if the Indian scenes were rewritten to appear in China or Turkey.

Perhaps there is one more location still to be revealed then. Maybe they are still working things out with South Africa for the train scenes, but haven't announced it yet as it hasn't officially been locked in.

Maybe - but I do find it odd that the South Africans basically threw themselves at SKYFALL, but have somehow been unable to come to an agreement with EON.

Anyway, with the knowledge that SKYFALL will take place in Shanghai, here's a few locations around the city that could be used:

Expo Axis

China Pavilion

Shanghai Stock Exchange

Nanjing Road East

Shanghai Expo Cultural Centre

In fact, most of the pavilions at Expo 2010 could be used (with a few notable exceptions - like the Dutch Pavilion). The Urbanian, Chinese, German, Israeli, Italian, Latvian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Saudi Arabian, Spanish, British and Emirati pavilions all look great.

I just had an interesting thought. With the inclusion of Scotland being a prominent location in Skyfall, do you guys think that it could possibly increase the likelihood of Sean Connery attending the premiere with the rest of the Bonds (George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig) for the 50th anniversary of 007 on film?

Istanbul was already in a Connery Bond and in The International, but I don't mind, it's a great city.

Shanghai was used in M:I3, its city center not so well, but the Chinese village was great. There are lots of other parts of China worth using, but unlike Loomis, it's not the Chinese cities I find attractive, but the great natural scenery outside of those cities. There are amazing landscapes in Western Hunan and Guangxi provinces with spectacular mountains that are still not too remote to shoot a movie in.

So Bond should avoid Istanbul because a film that involved Clive Owen trying way too hard to be Daniel Craig went there?

Taken 2 will also be filming in Istanbul shortly. Wonder if Liam Neeson will drop by the Bond set for a cameo, or Famke Janssen will randomly show up in the background a la Maud Adams in AVTAK!
