Hi! I recently finished watching the Region 1 special edition of You Only Live Twice and I thought something was out of place. There were no English subtitles for Japanese dialogue in the scenes were Bond arrives in Japan and is followed, and when Bond is in the back seat of a car disguised as Henderson's killer. I was pretty sure I saw subtitles during these scenes so I pulled out my VHS tape to check and there were indeed subtitles.

According to IMDB there were subtitles on a VHS version of YOLT, though in a different part of the movie.

But according to DVDTalk there never were any subtitles on American prints of the movie.

So what's the deal? Are the subtitles seen on my VHS tape something added to the movie that wasn't there originally? Is the special edition DVD missing subtitles that should be there like the special editions of Octopussy and The Living Daylights? Do the ultimate editions of YOLT have subtitles for the scenes I mentioned? I'd greatly appreciate help with this B)

I'm guessing the subtitles were added for the VHS. I recall no subtitles when TCM aired it back in May (don't own the DVD myself to check). From Russia With Love also lacks subtitles whenever characters are speaking Russian. Just the style of the day I suppose.

I also wonder how you guys watch the segment when the Russians launch their spacecraft - there's a big chunk of Russian dialogue without any subtitles.

I have never seen any YOLT print with subtitles. I don't know about American prints, but all the versions I have owned here in the UK have been devoid of subtitles.
My LD copy of From Russia With Love contained subtitles, but I have not seen them on any other version of that film.

The original film didn't have subtitles. They were added for at least one home video release years ago. They also added subtitles for From Russia With Love when Tatiana leaves the consulate and meets Klebb.

I can confirm that the UE DVD does not have subtitles and like other poster's on this thread have mentioned the subtitles were not on the the original prints and were added to one VHS release, more than likely to let the viewer know what they were saying but since it is not original it was eventually removed.

For years I watched YOLT on my VHS release (the one's they rereleased after Goldeneye came out) and it had subtitles. So for the longest time that's all I ever knew. Then when I got it on DVD I was confused why they were missing.

I thought my disc was defective lol.

As the Joe Bond says above, the subtitles were added for one VHS release. I saw YOLT when originally released and many times at the cinema since and it has never had subtitles. In fact you really don't need them. The scenes work perfectly without them.
