While Christopher Lee was fantastic as Scaramanga (like he is in everything) and gave him the edge to be one of my all-time favorite Bond villains, was he always the first choice for the role? If anybody deserved to be a Bond villain, it was Lee, but before even remembering he was in Fantasy Island, I thought a possibly better choice would have been Ricardo Montalban:

Like Lee, Montalban posessed that similar dark look, and could perfectly play both seductive and sinister. God knows he looked good in white suits bossing around Herve Villechaize, and had the chest to pull of a third nipple. So was Montalban even considered for the role before Lee? He was even Mexican, which would have been closer to Scaramanga's own Cuban nationality than the ever British Lee. Could his resemblance to Lee have lead to his casting in "Fantasy Island"? Was his name even seriously thrown around by Cubby and Harry? If not, it should have been.

Well, coco1997 and I did a rewrite where Ricardo Montalban was a disfigured Scaramanga operating out of Cuba; no Nick-Nack, but you should still check it out: George Lazenby's "The Man with the Golden Gun".

Scaramanga (Montalban) with diminutive sidekick (Villechaize) on a fantasy island. Good enough for TV.
