In "Diamonds are Forever", Bond mentions that he usually doesn't like redheads, as they have nasty tempers. But wasn't Tracy a redhead? It seems EON didn't view her as such, because the remark would come across as glib and inappropriate if they did. Or maybe it was intentional? Is Diana Rigg a redhead or not?

I never thought she was though there are a couple of scenes (the barn, for example) where the backlighting might have had that effect. But she was always brown (chestnut brown?)in my eyes. If you can get your hands on first The Avengers series in colour, that would be the confirmation.
But brunette, redhead, whatever, nothing can change my feelings for Diana Rigg. Oh, her sultry tones reading Jackanory......

In the poster, Robert McGinnis (I think he was the artist) drawn her as a redhead.

In The Avengers she was a brunette, but in On Her Majesty's Secret Service she was a redhead. In every bit of film I've seen of OHMSS, I've seen her as nothing but a redhead. She/EON simply died her hair for whatever reason for the role. (In the novel, Tracy di Vicenzo is actually a blonde!
) Izabella Scorupco did the same thing for her Natalya Simonova character in GoldenEye. A natural (and stunningly beautiful) blonde, she/EON dulled down her looks to "fit" as a poor, Russian computer programmer by turning her into a redhead as well.
As for the Diamonds Are Forever line, I think it's just Tom Mankiewicz giving Bond a line to say about stereotypical redheads and Jill St. John. He doesn't really mean it. After all, it's Bond. He likes/enjoys any beautiful woman whether she is redhead, blonde, brunette, European, American, Asian, Black, whatever. He's an equal opportunity womanizer.

Judging from this photo - http://upload.wikime..._Diana_Rigg.jpg - Diana Rigg looks like a natural brunette to me.

Yes, auburn seems like the right description to me- somewhere between brown and red, but mostly brown with a tinge of red.
Her hair in OHMSS seems to me as the same colour it was in The Avengers, which I assume is her natural colour.
