3. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (okay, this is more of a "favourite" rather than "best" list, otherwise FRWL would obviously be at #1)

I was however, very disappointed with The Return of the Man fron UNCLE. Both Solo and Kuryakin were clearly past their prime. I was hoping for another The Spy with My Face but alas.....

- Quantum of Solace
- Licence to Kill
- From Russia With Love
- Tomorrow Never Dies
- The Man With The Golden Gun
Quantum of Solace, Licence To Kill, and From Russia With Love are all in my top 5, so these rankings may make it seem as though FRWL isn't among the better films, which it is.

If I were to remove it from the equation, though, Quantum of Solace would come first, Licence to Kill second, Tomorrow Never Dies third and The Man with the Golden Gun fourth (that said, I rank Quantum of Solace and Licence to Kill quite highly, while Tomorrow Never Dies and The Man with the Golden Gun languish near the bottom of my overall rankings).

2. Licence to Kill
3. Quantum of Solace
4. Tomorrow Never Dies
5. The Man with the Golden Gun
With this ranking, I would like to note that I had a terribly difficult time choosing between Licence to Kill and Quantum of Solace for the second place slot, especially as I feel both films are consistently underrated. On another day, I might have switched them.

He looked like a drag queen in a suit. He seems like a ponce the way he taps the eating utensils on the table at the Gypsy camp.
His wig/hair is constantly shifting and an irritant.
The worst part of it is that James Bond doesn't even make an appearence in this movie until the 18 minute mark...and the fisrt action sequence is at 45 minutes. What a yawner of a Bond film for significant portions of the first act.
I can't believe that the UE Edition has affected me so much. I'm embarrassed - and turned off - by Connery's lipstick especially.

…but then that wouldn’t be providing any new information from my “All Films” list. And so I propose that we ask the question a little differently so that it amounts to more than just a subset of another list. Instead, I will answer the question on the premise that there is something particular about a follow-up film by which it can be judged. In other words: Which second film is the most relevant, or the most daring, (granted, those are probably two different questions) specifically in the light of its predecessor? Which film is the most successful in that special category called “sequel”? This is how I vote:
1. QOS - by a million billion miles. It blows any other attempt at genuine sequeling in the Bond series right out of the water, and exists as the single most experimental follow-up film in the series.
2. FRWL – still gets a good score for the neat continuation of the SPECTRE plot, for instituting a bit of the revenge angle against Bond and for solidifying what I consider to be THE standard for Bond’s character. Mostly relevant to the previous film, not super experimental, but a very wise move.
3. LTK – I appreciate that the producers noticed the appropriateness of allowing Dalton to portray a rogue agent. Such a narrative suits Dalton’s take on the character. However, this attempt to provide a much-needed shake up for the series was a feeble one at best.
4. MWTGG – Not much of a change from its predecessor. A good story in its own right, but really not a departure in any significant way from LALD. Status quo, IMO.
5. TND – An emphasis on the things we didn’t need in Bond. A damaging sequel. Boo.

Judo - we agree on a Brozza film! I have little time for TND too, but that being said, I still feel it's a better use of 125 minutes than TMWTGG, whose's highpoints are buried under misguided attempts at "humour," Mary Goodnight, and wasted opportunities.
As far as QoS, in all the recent critiqueing that we've all been doing, I've seen little comment on the fact that it's the first true sequel in the franchise. As much I as know you love the film, how much of that affection is attributed to the fact that it's a sequel, and that it's experimental?

For part A, I think I would have to say "a lot". More than anything else, I love QOS for the fact that it is Bond's story; his reflection on the betrayal from, and loss of, Vesper, his deconstructing sense of vengeance, his formation of trust, and his healing phase (despite the ironical fact that he spends a lot of time getting punched and burnt, etc...). QoS couldn't be the great Bond story that it is unless it was the sequel to Casino Royale. So it's 'sequelness' has MUCH to do with my love for it. Causal Factor = 50% would not be an overexaggeration. As much I as know you love the film, how much of that affection is attributed to the fact that it's a sequel, and that it's experimental?
As for the experimental factor (notwithstanding the fact that a true sequel IS experimental for the Bond series), not as much. I appreciate it. I think it's necessary at least every decade or so, in order for the series to keep strong. But as for how much it causes me to love the film, probably only about 10%.

I voted for it too but you think it had too much violence? James Bond movies are supposed to be violent! After all, he's a British spy and assassin.I voted for Licence To Kill. It is not only a great Bond film, but a great movie. I find that it is a very well done film. It is better written, directed, and acted than most Bond movies. My only problem with it is the violence, which I think is unnecessary for a Bond film.

FRWL wins by a mile for me,I usually rank it fifth best or sixth best of the series,an excellent, quite Hitchcockian spy thriller with as much suspense as action.
As for the others,I think all four of them rank in the bottom half of the series. Tomorrow Never Dies and The Man With The Golden Gun are very flawed but still entertaining,Licence To Kill very flawed and not especially entertaining, and Quantum Of Solace......well I've said enough about that in other threads!

I've never seen The Return Of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., but it might be a fair call - From Russia With Love aside, every Bond actor's second outing has been a dividing one.OK, who voted for Lazenby!?

Oooh, you're missing out. If I remember correctly, something to do with a stolen nuclear bomb (aren't they all?) and a climax filmed at the Hoover Dam. But Laz shows up in an old Aston, but I don't think he's referred to as James Bond.
