JAMES BOND THE LEGACY by John Cork & Bruce Scivally
A REVIEW
by "zencat"

There have been a lot of books written about the James Bond films and phenomenon; I should know because I

If this book does have a minor flaw (and it's extremely minor) it's a pro EON bias. For instance, when the book discusses things like the pressure Broccoli and Saltzman brought to bear on Norman Felton to change the name of his TV spy show from 'Mr. Solo'. The language used is couched to show the Bond producers in a better light than other accounts of the affair have. Still, given the access Cork and Scivally were given to the EON archives it's unreasonable not to expect a little vanishing of events here and there.

That aside it's a brilliant book, especially if your friends and family are stumped as to what to get you for Christmas.

I keep heading to my local Barnes and Noble and Borders retailers and still all of the copies are "in-transit". That brings the total to 18 in-transit! Quite suprising for a Bond book, judging that I never saw the Ian Johnstone The World Is Not Enough Companion ever in a US store. Ironically, I'm still seeing Making Of Tomorrow Never Dies books once in a while. :)

True, but you have to expect this from an official book. Hey, at least they tell this story. Past official book would never touch anythning like this.

I picked the book up at Barnes and Noble three hours ago. A great read so far. BTW I met John de Lancie in the bookstore and made an *** outof myself. But, more on that later, back to the book.

Please, let's hear the rest of your story.
I met John and his family about ten years ago and he was a real joy.
(And yeah, I embarassed myself too.)

In my rush to talk to him. I tripped over my feet, and knocked down the entire Bond display. The sight of me at his feet caused every one to laugh. But, you are right, He is wonderful. I hope I never see PB in person , I'll the papers.:)

I was about to write a review of this fine book, but rather than take focus away from Zencats remarkable review, I thought I'd just post here to help more people notice it :) Heres to you Zencat!

I love this book, everything zencat said is true, and its not just the pics from DAD that lead me to the conclusion that zencat has made, but most of the phrases that they use also give me great hope for the film (and yes, you bet your *** I read the whole section devoted to DAD spoiler or no spoiler :)). Besides, its less than a month away, and its not like it spoiled it for me anymore than the board has :)

Just a shame Cork and Scivally skimped on TLD and LTK . That section reads like a modern studies textbook, getting bogged down in stuff about the Iran /Contra affair but failing to shed any new light on the Dalton era. Its a very perfunctory treatment for what was (like it or loath it) a pivotal time for the series.

I assume you mean the enourmous size of the book! Coffee table book my ***! This thing is a coffee table, put four legs on it and you could use it in a small apartment.

There is an assortment of books that every Bond aficionado should have in their respective collection, of course the list is headed by Ian Fleming

Just resurrecting this thread instead of starting a new for a now relatively old book.

Anyway, I've been hesitant to buy this book because it's just so damned expansive (it still sells here in Oz for $110!).

But when I went into Borders the other day they had two copies whereas on my past visits (I practically live in the store) there's only ever been one, the Boxtree one. The second one I noticed was exactly half the cost of the other, though. :cooltongue:

Now, the cheaper one is published by Abrams, and I want to know if it's any different to the Boxtree one?

At $55 I can afford it if it has the same content as the Boxtree one.

It is my understanding that the Boxtree and Abrams printings have the same content, but I've never compared them side by side.

John Cork told me they are absolutely the same.

And oddly enough, both were printed in Britain. The "American" ones were printed in England and shipped to the US.

I don't think any Bond fan can afford NOT to buy this superb book.
It really is one of the masterworks on the subject.
John Cork, Bruce Scivally and their helpers (yes, that includes you doublenoughtspy :cooltongue: ) really should be congratulated on an excellent body of Bondian work (including the DVD's).

I'm surprised prices are so high on this elsewhere. Here in the U.S., I am always seeing copies of The Legacy and Bond Girls Are Forever for around $20 each in the bargain section of Barnes and Noble.

Yeah, I remember being a bit confused about it when I first about this new one last year.

Amazing how one book can be half the cost yet contain the same content. AUS-GBP and AUS-US exchange rates and all that, I guess.

I don't think any Bond fan can afford NOT to buy this superb book.

The Abrams publication will fix that oversight for me. :cooltongue:

There wouldn't be any need. Early on in our relationship she laid down the ground rules. If I ever "strayed" she'd go missing, the kids would go missing, and the bank account(s) would go missing! True romantic, my wife.

Its a good book, it came out just when tim dalton was picked for the role, at the time it was the most informative background on 007 ( books and films ) that i had come across.
