Angels & Demons (2009)

Anyway, Angels & Demons filming kicked off yesterday in Rome (its release date having been pushed back six months due to the WGA strike) and the first set pictures have emerged (featuring Tom Hanks sans mullet).
As enjoyable a page-turner as The Da Vinci Code was, I found Angels & Demons to be the better book of the two. It lacks the heavy exposition that occassionally bogged down The da Vinci Code (and its film adaptation) and is by and large a more cinematic story, which should make for more of a cracking actioner than its predecessor was.
The joint participation of McG and Christian Bale in Terminator Salvation should cancel each other out to deliver an average follow-up and Transformers 2 will be more of the same, while Wolverine holds some potential. But Angels and Demons is currently sitting at the top of my list for Summer 2009.

I also see Max von Sydow as Maximilian Kohler and Adoni Maropis as the Hassassin, given a long curly wig and a beard.

Could not agree more, [dark]. It does immediately strike one as having that cinematic side to a very fast-paced story.
Was hugely disappointed when this was set back because of the Writer's Strike, but am thrilled to hear things are now moving forward.

By the way, anybody know of progress on the third Langdon novel?

Actually I was just wondering the same thing so I had a quick search on the net. It seems that the novel - The Solomon Key - has been completed but a publication date is yet to be set. Hopefully this year... although I've been half expecting it for the last 2-3 years now!By the way, anybody know of progress on the third Langdon novel?

Yeah, I've been periodically checking the Wikipedia page on this one--but it doesn't seem like there's been any new news on when to expect this in quite a while.

Should I have any reason to expect anything different from ANGELS & DEMONS?

I found THE DA VINCI CODE to bring new meaning to the word "tedium."
Should I have any reason to expect anything different from ANGELS & DEMONS?
If the film adaptation is going to stick relatively close to the book, then hopefully so. The countdown aspect of Angels & Demons should make this a much faster paced film and likely a nice change for those who thought the Da Vinci Code film just moved too slow.

I didn't think THE DA VINCI CODE moved too slow, I just thought it was terribly uninvolving and ludicrous. It reated the most ridiculous material (stuff straight out of NATIONAL TREASURE) with a very straight face, never developed any of their characters to a reasonable level, and on the whole just felt rather awkward. If the film adaptation is going to stick relatively close to the book, then hopefully so. I've never checked my watch during a film more than I did with THE DA VINCI CODE. If a friend hadn't been so excited to bring me, I probably would have walked out.

the book was truly an amazing and entertaining read.
Yes, in the same way that some of my stories when I was a kid were entertaining...
And then he jumped off the castle and landed on a plane, and then when he fell of the plane he managed to land on an elephant. He had only 5 seconds before the elephant was due to run off a cliff to their certain deaths but somewhere in the back of his mind he remembered that if you pull an elephants ears at the right angle then they can take off and float downwards from high cliff edges. He recalled a conversation he'd had with the late Professor Linkl from Vienna University during which they argued about the particular angle needed for pachyderm ear-pull flight and what they finally agreed was 43 degrees. With only 2 seconds left before certain death, he pulled the ears with all his might and the elephant lifted off the ground...

I hear that. I only went to see the teaser for CR on the big screen. Ugh, it was dull, dull, dull. Couldn't believe this was one of the big summer event movies, it was like some kind of Sunday night BBC drama. Anyhoo, I was looking at Sony release dates (to try and gauge if/when a second QoS trailer would be out), and it occurs to me that, given the previous trailer pairing of these two franchises, the first trailer for Angels and Demons will be attached to QoS. Er...yay.

I believe it's only been released in Region 4 (I expect it'll be released in other regions around the time of Angels & Demons' release). It's an extra 25 minutes long, filling in a lot of gaps from the novel - highly recommended for fans of the book.
As an aside, Hans Zimmer's soundtrack to the film is superb. "Chevaliers de Sangreal" is one of the most atmospheric cues I've ever heard.

Has anybody else seen the Extended Edition of The Da Vinci Code?

Never realised this was an R4 exclusive.

And yes, I agree that Zimmer's score for this particuar movie is levels above his other more cookie-cutter soundtracks of late.

Ditto.Mmm, I like too. Quite excited for this. I've always preferred the novel of ANGELS & DEMONS to the DA VINCI CODE.
I have a feeling this will be a darker film than its predecessor (aren't all sequels these days?), as it should be given how violent the book is.
This might be the movie I'm looking forward to most next summer.
