A few weekends ago, TV Ontario aired "Saint Jack" (a 1978 film written and directed by Peter Bogdanovich, who also had a cameo). Ben Gazzara was a pleasant surprise in the starring role: Jack Flowers, a warmhearted pimp who, despite his choice of career, has a stronger moral code than nearly everyone he encounters (the lone exception being Denholm Elliott's timid William Leigh).

George Lazenby shows up late in the film as a U.S. senator Gazzara's character has been asked to photograph in a homosexual liaison so that Bogdanovich's character, a CIA operative, can frame him. It was an interesting casting choice, and Lazenby doesn't really have a whole lot to do. It's really more Gazzara's chance to shine as his character wrestles with his sense of ethics vs. the financial windfall he will receive if he goes through with it.

I also notice a David Lazenby listed in the cast credits. I assume that he and George are related?

Its a good film with high production values though Lazenby doesn't have much to do and was pretty scathing about this role in it.

David Lazenby isn't related to George Lazenby as far as I know. Its not that uncommon a name.

I bought the DVD a short while ago. Gazzara's best character IMO. A very small part for The Laz and very different to Bond, which I guess was his intention. I plan to watch it again over the weekend with Bogdanovich's commentary running.

As a fan of Paul Theroux's novel, I've always wanted to see this film, but it seems pretty difficult to get hold of, at least here in the UK.

I've never read/heard any of his comments about this particular role. What did he have to say about it?

Laz is in the movie towards the end with his screen time lasting only about 13 minutes, and with only a couple of heard spoken lines, although you can see him talking from afar a few times.

In his commentary Bogdanovich talks about Lazenby being in the only Bond movie with a sad ending, and that it was a flop, and he only did the one, yadda-yadda-yadda. He also said that Laz had just finished doing Hawaii Five-O, so it ended up being cheaper to get him to Singapore from there than from LA. The double irony here is that the 2-hour episode, called

Even though this name is listed on IMDb it is not displayed in the title credits or in the end credits of the movie.

According to IMDb - which can be fraught with inaccuracies - there have been 16 Lazenbys to date in the film industry. And two of them are called "David Lazenby".
