but I think that a good, low-key song along the lines of U2's "So Cruel" could work as a theme song for QoS.
That is exactly what I have in mind. Something rather haunting.

However, I agree with the previous posts that a haunting tune capturing the essence of "Quantum of solace" is more likely, there's a lot of emotional space that the title covers which opens up many possibilities for the composers.

Im actually glad its a hard title to put into song, Ive never really liked title songs mentioning the movies title. Some of them are good but some of them are so forced. Goldfinger/Cold finger.. Argh.
Goldfinger song too forced!? You've got to be kidding? Were you around when Goldfinger was first released in the theaters in 1964? I can understand Tomorrow Never Dies by Sheryl Crow or Die Another Day by Madonna being forced, but seriously how can you say that about Goldfinger. It's the song that just about every other Bond song has tried to mimic.
As for the words Quantum of Solace being part of the lyrics, I can see it done and I recommend the best lyric writer for the job - Don Black.

Every time you fall in love, you give pieces of yourself away
and when the love dies you have to find your QUANTUM OF SOLACE
QUANTUM OF SOLACE
Yeah
QUANTUM OF SOLACE
After the love dies you have to find your QUANTUM OF SOLACE, yeah, QUANTUM OF SOLACE
First kill, on a mission, lose yourself so the love could redeem you-hooo...
But when the love dies, you have to find your QUANTUM OF SOLACE, yeah, your QUANTUM OF SOLACE
Yada yada yada blah blah and so forth...

And I'm sure they can get away without even having to make it rhyme. If the first line were structured like:
It's said a quantum of solace is all that remains
When death has quenched that lovers' flame...
and so on.... so you're just finding a word to rhyme with "remains" and it doesn't even have to be a perfect rhyme either.

an instrumental song a la On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
This is the option that I'm hoping for. I suppose it's simply wishful thinking, though.

& Although YKMN was probably the best song from the whole Bond series, I rather like it when they use the film title for the song..otherwise, it feels like its just another song...
Goldfinger, Goldeneye, From Russia With Love, The World Is Not Enough...all wonderful songs, but admittedly, so was OHMSS - I was just listening to it yesterday.
As for the mood...definitely something edgy, like YKMN - and I agree that a haunting tune would suit the title perfectly.

I just hope that, if they do, David Arnold can tap into that subtle vein of creativity that made John Barry's theme for OHMSS a classic.

He may be tempted to tweak his unused song by removing the Scott Walker vocal.an instrumental song a la On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

He already used the melody as Elektra's theme in TWINE, I'm afraid.

How about "I Will Return", then?
