I've been meaning to ask this for ages but I never got round to it, What On Earth happened with everyone on these Boards Suddenly despising Die Another Day?

I am currently reading through the old threads from 2002:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Die Another Day is a celebration of all things Bond. It is also of movie of great extremes. Gritty and darker than any film in the series yet more fantastical, colorful and unbelievable than I could have ever imagined."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"First off, I LOVED IT! I'll have to see how it lasts with me, but it's definately the best for quite a while. It definately beats GoldenEye as far as I'm concerned."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"I'm gonna say DAD is my favorite Bond film, theres just so much fun stuff in it its hard to hate it"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"I have to say that I enjoyed it immensely. I found it very hard to dislike."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"I think Die Another Day may be the defining Bond film for the current series the way Goldfinger was in it's day and The Spy Who Loved Me was in it's."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Die Another Day has brought in a whole new audience for Bond and took the series into the 21st century. From what I've been hearing, much more people like DAD than dislike it."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"DAD made a lot more money than TWINE, and was a much better picture than TWINE."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"It's a good film, just not an excellent one. I found the characters to be quite good...
...I do like the film though, those are just some things it could have improved upon."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

So, what happened, Everyone seemed to love the movie up untill around 2004. Its realy interesting how much difference a few years makes. :P. Will everyone feel this way about Casino Royale in a couple of years. :D!

I've always hated it. But I wasn't a CBn member when it came out.

Interesting look backwards, Mharkin007! :D
I wasn't a CBn member at the time, but my feelings towards DAD have always more or less been the same:
1) the first half of the film is pretty good
2) the second half is pretty bad and really over-the-top

That said, I really don't hate this film!

I find DIE ANOTHER DAY entertaining enough. However, I know that talk always comes back to the infamous ice surfing scene, but that is the moment that I honestly took a double take at the screen. I literally could not believe that such a poor bit of CGI could be featuring in a big budget Bond movie in the twenty first century. Then the conclusion on the plane was pretty poor too in my mind. I'll still watch the movie but it rapidly went downhill for me from a solid start.

Is it just me or does anyone else think the CGI, when Jinx dives of the cliff is actually not that bad, there has been many complaints over the years regarding this, but I really do think that the CGI in that scene is the most believable in the movie.

That's not really saying a whole lot. :D

But in comparison to the iceberg scene, it doesn't look too terrible.

All I can tell you is that I noticed it instantly, although I had heard in advance about the film's poor CGI stunts.

It's pretty sad when a movie has the biggest budget of the year (which DAD did) and yet their computer graphics are on par with a mid-90's video game.

I wasn't a member of CBn back in '02 but I will say this. I love EVERY Bond when I first see it in the cinema, and I see every one at least twice on the big screen. It's only on mulitiple viewings that they settle and gain their true value to me. I enjoyed DAD in the cinema (mainly due to the "references" stuff, but I do remember saying to a friend the next day that the movie got worse the longer it went on - which is conventional wisdom now.

I think it's part of being a fan. We want to think the best, and we want each film to be better than the one before. It's only with the benefit of hindsight that we're truly able to evaluate. That's the why the CR - 1 year on thread was such an interesting read. Plus, with all the showings on TV and special edition DVDs, it's not hard to rack up a lot of viewings. And only the great films (any film, not just a Bond) survive that test.

I never liked DAD, I squirmed in my seat watching the scenes that introduced Jinx and pretty much continued to do so until the end of the film.

From the first 30 mins maybe more, it showed so much promise, then it just went right downhill.

The same happened to me. I loved it the first time I saw, but then I realized some things are a disaster... Tamahori, for example.

Yeah.

I liked DAD when it came out in cinemas. However after watching it on DVD some years later I found that it did not stand up. But I would not go so far as to call it a disaster or the worst Bond film of all time. It's a piece of entertaiment and pretty much a live action cartoon (which is essentially what Bond films are). Most of the criticism I have found towards it, just seems like snobbery pure and simple. Bond films have never been on par with Shakespeare and I find myself irritated with people who equate it with that.

Yeah, it's not my favourite. Actually the first hour was pretty good, but the 2nd half was like Star Wars.

However - FACT:- Die Another Day was popular on this website, in December 2002. Zencat said it was his favourite Bond movie.

True, but it does seem as though DAD's reputation has nosedived in recent years, to the point where Bond fans, by and large, consider it a turkey like BATMAN & ROBIN or THE PHANTOM MENACE, or, I dunno, GIGLI. The subsequent brilliance of CASINO ROYALE and Craig's performance have not helped DAD, handing its haters some rather awesome ammunition.

Now, DAD is certainly not the great film CR is*, but I do get the impression that it used to be rather more popular in fandom than it is now. On release, the critics did not band together to eat it alive, although you could argue that reviewers always give Bond an easy ride, especially in the UK. Put it this way: it didn't get the critical drubbing that Tamahori's followup, xXx: THE NEXT LEVEL, quite rightly received, although my impression is that most Bond fans in 2008 would say that it deserved the same kind of reviews.

*Although I still maintain that it is, in its way, a great Bond movie, and a definite improvement on the dull, self-important THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH.

I started squirming in my seat when the Vanish turned up... then sank deep into the upholstery when the awful ice surfing CGI started. After that there was no saving the film for me. For a long time I did think that it was a film of two halves - a great beginning and a lousy ending. But on watching it again on DVD a few times I've really started to dislike the awful dialogue, which is evident even in the beginning.

But, unlike many, I really don't hate Jinx and I do think her little dive off the cliff is rather good (although I'm usually more focused on Halle Berry's bosom).

I never loved DAD, but I've certainly tended to look at it more critically over the years (in a way that I wouldn't with, say, Dr No).

Regarding Casino Royale I'm not blown away - I think some of the Bond/Vesper dialogue (writing and delivery) in the train scene and at the hospital is pretty bad.

I agree, Mharkin. The dialogue between Bond and Vesper was very good. Stylized, yes, but intelligent and genuinely witty. Some of their back and forths reminded me of David Mamet, whereas the interaction between Bond and Jinx gave off more of an Ed Wood vibe.

I think the dialogue in CR is very good in general (this is a major improvement after DAD!).

But I also agree that some scenes feels a little bit... "unnatural". The hospital scene isn't very good for example. "Whatever is left of me..." worked much better in the trailer :D
