What was Goldeneye exactly? Was it the satellite or the device with the eye in the middle? If the latter, why did they keep talking about the Goldeneye satellite? And what were each supposed to do? And if it was designed as a weapon, who designed it?

GoldenEye was a satellite. It detonates a nuclear explosion in the earth's atmosphere which sends an electromagnetic pulse down to it's target. There were two GoldenEye satellites in the movie. One that is detonated over the Severnaya facility in order to cover up the "theft" of the other one. Trevelyan wants to use the other one to cover up the theft of money. Maybe it is confusing because GoldenEye is referred to with person qualities -- i.e. "stop GoldenEye" when it should be stop they guy controlling the satellite.

The Russians designed them & put them in space. It was top secret & only rumoured to exist (that is, of course, until the first one was detonated). I guess they were just saving them for a rainy day. :D

Thanks for the explanation. But what was the device (that card-like thing with the eye in the middle) that was put in place as a kind of launch sequence thing? Wasn't that Goldeneye? It had an eye in the middle and it was golden.

The term 'GoldenEye' is the codename for a Russian space weapons system consisting of two satellites, Petya and Mischa. They were both operational in 90 minute orbits at an altitude of 100km.

The GoldenEye satellites emit an EMP pulse at the desired location that destroys all electronic systems. Ouromov used Petya on Severnaya to hide any evidence of him being there and stealing the control keys to control the last satellite, Mischa. This destroys Petya in the process as a GoldenEye satellite can only be used once.

Firstly, two individual gold keys had to be inserted by two people at the same time. The GoldenEye weapons system is controlled by a large orange disk. It is inserted and it activates the system, which sends a red laser over and through it with the pattern being read by the system on the satellite tracking screen. The satellite is then fully operational.

Thanks. I think that helped clear some things up. I think the disk with the eye can be a little confusing at times because that's the most obvious thing that looks like a Goldeneye.

Doesn't Goldeney actually refer to the whole thing - the satellites and the system controlling them?
