I think it was Mr. White, you never do get a clear shot of the killer. If you look closely after Le Chiffre hits the ground his eye moves.

there is a clear shot and it is Mister White, admittedly the scene does conclude VERY quickly but the voice alone is distinctivly that of Mister White

It was undeniably Mr White. We hear his voice and his taunts of who to trust. I almost loathe the scene and White, because I like Mads portrayal of Le Chiffre. BUT - without the scene Bond would be fed something "he seemed not to value" and remain unfaithful to the book. Then again White adds menace to the scene.

Mr Jesper White,

Born 30th February 1980 on the tiny Danish island of Bornholm, White was the progeny of a buxom milk maid in traditional dress and ex-Danish Nazi officer in hiding on a dairy farm. Showing pyschotic tendencies as a child, he began to develop a fascination for milk. Not long after his parents took over the milk farm, they were found mysteriously drowned in a vat of full fat cream. In the memorial service, White noted that "they did not pass away, but were pasteurized...it was butter this way." Inheriting the milk farm, Jesper became obsessed with milk production and cattle rearing. Freudily, he also became attracted to older, attractive women with children dressed in milk maid uniforms who formed a disproportinate number in his organization MILF (Membership of International Lactose Farmers). White only ever dressed in clean, white underwear. White has a number of medical conditions: he has prematurely aged, his hair turning the colour of silvertop semi, and beneath his skin, puss builds up and leaks - so it looks as if he bleeds "milk". He developed a plan to annihilate the cities of Europe and replace them with lush grazing ground for cattle - so he could control not only production but distribution of the world's milk supply to become the ultimate, MILKMAKER. However, only being a dairy farmer by trade, he needed to learn about villainy. He joined the mysterious Organization for the 4 year World Domination course and was just about to graduate, after coming home from aceing a particularly tough exam ("Understanding the FSA": notice how he stretches after getting out of the car - those 3 hour papers are tough!), when he was shot in the knee by 007.

That's who killed Le Chiffre...

I'd have thought someone as high-ranking as White appears to be would have sent a minion to do the deed. This is where the film jumps the shark.

Who says he's senior? Could be fairly junior - a mid level representative.

Well I dunno, it seems to me that Le Chiffre's actions have embarrassed Mr. White. White introduced Obanno to Le Chiffre, who then lost Obanno's money; this would reflect badly on White and his organization, so White himself must take out the trash.

Seeing as we got to see Bond get the best of White at the end of CR, I think he's just a "link in the (much bigger) pipeline," so to speak.

I thought Smithers did it?

I think there needed to be at least one small scene between post-credit sequence and when he whacks Le Chiffre, because when I saw the film for the first time I wasn't exactly sure who I was looking at.

Of course in retrospect I know it was Mr. White, but to have such a minor character re-appear after about 100 minutes and shoot the primary antagonist is more than a little sudden.

If looking at it straight from the point of who the villains were in Casino Royale, then Mr. White was definitely the highest-ranking. Hopefully we'll learn more about who is above him in Bond 22.

I don't see it that way. As I've argued before, the relationships between the various villains in CR is more complex than in most Bond films, and this is probably no clearer than in Mr. White's case.

He seems to be a mid-tier agent (trustworthy and experienced, but not above dirty work when need be) meant to act as The Organization's link to Le Chiffre, who seems to be even more of a free agent than Dr. No was with respect to SPECTRE. The two are not in a single chain of command. Really, I think the best way to think of it, until proven otherwise, is to look at Mr. White as being about on-par with Morzeny (Walter Gotell's character) in FRWL, with Le Chiffre but a mere a shadow of Dr. No.

Since he was already on the case and Le Chiffre was probably considered no threat, he simply took care of the problem on his own. I suppose the one thing that's a stretch is that he didn't have any goons with him, but we don't even know that for sure, given that we only saw him for a few seconds as he dispatched a pathetic, quivering, defenseless Le Chiffre.

Mr. White probably did have his own people with him. They were not with him on-screen, as they were busy dispatching the rest of Le Chiffre's goons and Valenka too. The sound effects that took place before White appeared suggested a gun battle royale between the goonies, with orders by White to keep Vesper alive.

Well if it wasn't George Smiley then surely it was the Fawn.

On a serious note though, Mr White could have been like James Bond to Mi6 if per se Britain loaned George Bush 20 dollars.
