[Daddy Bond]

The first time I heard Chris Cornell's song, "You Know My Name" I wanted to cringe. I didn't like it one bit. To make matters worse, when I saw CR in the theater, the song was muffled and warped. Then, I really couldn't stand it.

I thought, "Well, one of the best Bond movies EVER with one of the worst Bond songs ever!"

But after watching the DVD through my home stereo - the song is starting to grow on me - especially when combined with the fantastic title graphics of CR.

You know, at least when played with the title sequence, I think I'm starting to like the song - BUT ONLY IN THAT CONTEXT - the regular MTV video makes me cringe - and I don't like it by itself...

But with the titles it just WORKS! As a matter of fact, together, the new titles and the song may make the CR Titles my favorite ever. The song BECOMES cool in that context - when it exists alongside the Title artwork.

Thoughts anyone?

I actually liked it alright from the beginning, but it definitely has grown on me, and I like it better than most Bond songs in a long time (except GoldenEye). And yes, I love it with the titles. David also did a great job sampling it throughout the score!

I agree with you there about Coffee. I can take it when it's smothered over with white and dark chocolate and whipped cream at Starbuck's, but I can't bring myself to like coffee in any other way. I can take it socially, but never choose to drink it on its own.

Well, a bit off subject...But I'm with you on the coffee thing.

I don't like the version of it that they used in the films as Cornell's voice can barely be heard over the music and the background singers. The single version that appears on iTunes is the one that should have been used in the film. That version is a great song, but the one that actually appeared in the movie needed a different arrangement.

I must disagree with tdalton. The film version is by far the best and the iTunes version is by far the worst. There's just no comparison between the orchestrations.

I think its a pretty solid Bond song. The version in the film is by far the best.

I thought the song was dire when I first heard it - "America, **** Yeah" meeting a particularly insipid Manic Street Preachers B-side.

However, a few listens later, I'd completely reversed myself, and now I consider it a work of absolute genius and easily the best Bond song in, oh, about thirty years. I'm a purist for the "rock" version, though, and don't much care for the edit used in the film.

Cornell is the Craig of 007 songwriters. At first you think HUH?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! And then you come to realise that he's brilliant, he's perfect, he's Flemingian, he's the most suitable choice who ever walked the earth, and so forth.

Bear in mind that this is coming from someone who also loves Madonna's "Die Another Day", though.

I love the song. It is my favourite Bond song.

I like every version that Cornell released, but the movie version is my favourite.
The song has such a good chorus.

When I first heard it I didn't like it much either. But, when I saw CR on 11/17 and watched the main title sequence... I knew it was the right song.

I really do like it a lot now.

I have always liked this theme song. I thought it worked really well with the title sequence in CR. It's even the main ringer on my cell phone!

I was indifferent to it when I first heard a sample. Then I went to see the film on opening weekend and fell absolutely in love with it, probably because of Kleinman's awesome titles. I also thought the arrangement had far, FAR more depth to it than the sample I'd heard.

I bought the version on iTunes--a damn good rockin' arrangement, if I do say so myself--but ideally I'd like to rip the film arrangement off the DVD*, or if it's ever released somewhere someday.

I also like how David Arnold sampled it everywhere in the score.



*Is there some way to do that and leave the DVD soundtrack intact?

its an adequate film opening title song ... and i mean FILM.

its hardly bond though.

such a great film required the dramatic , orchestral treatment that the best bonds got ala barry /bassey-esque .

diamonds are forever etc were as memorable as the movies ... this is wall-paper.

i was just about to say they should have hired tom jones then remembered his awful 'thunderball' theme tune . heh.

next bond 'choon' should be sung by bono hahahaha

It's interesting to see the indifference to this song, I personally like it but friends of mine have thought it awful, i tried to explain it was better than what had been used for a long time but he just said you just like it because it's a Bond theme tune.

He might be right but every time I hear it I can't help but like it, I think it suits the credits fine and think that Cornell however cheesy the lyrics are gets the essence of the story better than Crowe, Garbage or Madge could ever do.

I don't regard it a work of genius and nothing has come close to Barry's brilliance, some may dislike TLD by AHA but I think it's fine and AVTAK is great.

We're not likely to see another GF, YOLT or OHMSS these are different times and John Barry's don't grow on trees.

He set the bench mark so high it's likely this is an element of the Bond series which will always be never bettered.

Although who knows! I could be wrong.

It has definitely grown on me since I first heard it. My preference is the DVD version of it. The fact that the song was completed in time for David Arnold to work it into the score of the movie has really added to my enjoyment of it. I hope the producers make this happen again in the future movies.

The first time I heard it was when I saw the making-of video on MTV a few months ago. Hearing it with the titles I liked it better. Thought it worked well the few times Arnold worked it into the main soundtrack and thought he could have used it a little more, the way Barry used to establish them in his scores.

I like the music in the theatrical version, it's just that it completely overwhelms Cornell's vocals. I tried adjusting some settings on my TV earlier today and made the song a bit better, but I just liked the fact that I could actually hear him clearly in the iTunes version of the song whereas I couldn't in the film version. I might do some more adjustments to the settings to see if I can make it better, and if so, I'm certainly willing to change my mind on the song because I really think that, lyrically, this is one of the strongest theme songs in the franchise.

With that said, however, I would have rather heard the iTunes version in the film because I think that, after the adrenaline rush that one gets from the PTS, the harder edge that that particular arrangement has carries on very well from the PTS. I really do like the song, but the arrangement in the film isn't the best, IMO.

Yes, it has grown on me-I now think it suits Craig's unrefined version of Bond. I absolutely hated it before and now I can tolerate it but I won't ever listen to it seperately from watching CR....Anyway, it's acceptable to me now but here hasn't really been a great song since Duran Duran's.

I'd love to see a newer version of 'Mr. Kiss Bang Bang' for the Bond 22 credits after a standard gun barrel.

It's also a lot of fun to play on the guitar.

Oh, me too. I've loved that song since I first heard it. That said, the adrenaline rush I got during the credit sequence of CR was probably the biggest headrush I'd ever gotten in a movie. That particular mix of the song, blended with what's probably the best main titles of any Bond ever really elevated the song for me.

I loathed it when I first heard it. Didn't think it was QUITE so bad when I saw it over the fabulous titles. Now I can just about tolerate it - if I'm in a very good mood. That's progress, I suppose.

I have to disagree. I know it wasn't a title song - although could have been - but "Surrender" is, for me, one of the best Bond songs ever.

I did balk when I heard it. "Cock Rock" thought I. But it is as the film is - a necessary departure.

Definitely warmed to it, but only after hearing it with the main titles. The song and the graphics perfectly complement each other.
