Dalton seems pretty proud of his involvement in Hot Fuzz, and to be taking a pretty big role in the promotion of the film in the UK in interviews etc. probably cause he's such a big name outside of the comedy circle.

I did find it ammusing when the interviewer asked him how much Bond still overshadows any current work he is involved in, Tim's "well here we are 20 years later talking about it" responce could be seen coming a mile off!

Hot Fuzz does look to be a brilliant piece of comedy, with a lot to do in order to top Shaun of the Dead. The more clips that I see the more and more confidence I have in it, and us Lucky brits will get to see it TOMORROW!!

I'm glad to see it doesn't bother him though.

Although Craig's portrayal may have been the closest to Fleming's (and perhaps the best), I still think that Dalton is the actor that respects and loves the character the most and I'm happy to see that.

Okay, I've figured out how to watch this. Good to hear Dalton praising Craig and CASINO ROYALE, and interesting to hear him basically admit that they wanted to go a little further into grittiness and "Fleming" during his own era but met with "opposition".

BTW, Dalton looks pretty good for his age (63). Makes me think he could have played Bond up till TOMORROW NEVER DIES.

They were interviewing Timothy Dalton this morning on BBC Breakfast about his role in the new police comedy 'Hot Fuzz.' A very nice and laid-back man.

Inevitably (and this is why I watched) the subject came to the new James Bond. When asked what he thought of Daniel Craig in the role (and the comparisons to his own Bond) Dalton had nothing but praise. He called him 'terrific', saying that the series has really made 'a leap forward'. He also said that the producers and Craig have gone right back to the Fleming grittiness and toughness, 'but even more so'. He compared Craig's interpretation with his own time in the role and mentioned that the world 'wasn't quite ready for what we did', but concluded in a general note of pleasure over Craig's success as Bond.
When it came to the question of whether playing Bond was a burden on any of his other post-Bond roles, he said 'well, we wouldn't be sitting here talking about it if it wasn't' (or something along those lines).
You'll probably be able to watch it later on the BBC website sometime in the near future. I'm not too hot on finding these things. Confused

So there we are: confirmation of what Dalton thinks of Craig, perhaps hints that Dalton regards him as even closer to Fleming's character than he was (something that individually I wouldn't quite agree with), and yet another former Bond actor to add to the pro-Craig crowd. Very Happy

Tim had the misfortune of following Roger. If he had followed someone who had not been in the role so long and therefore identified with it, he and his interpretation of Bond would have been better accepted by the general public.

Agreed. While it was a shame that Dalton was a head of his time (from the standpoint that he didn't get more than two films), it's great to see that his tenure in the role is now being validated by the great success that Craig has had playing a Bond that is very similar to Dalton's in terms of the approach.
