Before i start, hi to all. CR was the best bond movie so far. From my viewing i understood it that LeChiffre's death (when torturing Bond) was faked as the torture was going no where and the code could be best obtained through vespers betrayal and it was him in venice with the eye patch who gets killed with a nail through the eye. However others tell me lechiffre did die and the guy with the patch is a henchman of mr whites. If this is true then it must be said they have a startling similarity which confused me at least (maybe im dumb). So which is it guys????? Anyone else make this mistake???

Le Chiffre and the eyepatched henchman are two completely different characters. The henchman is a character from the novel called Gettler.

Actually, we definately know its Gettler. Bond sees the name on Vespers cell phone, which is how he caught the whole deal going down...Le Chiffre and the eyepatched henchman are two completely different characters. The henchman is a character from the novel called Gettler.

Of course we do. Like you said Gettler's name was also in the film.
I was just pointing out that he was also originally in the book.

As others have pointed out, he's a different character, named Gettler. The eye similarity is a bit odd - the black eye patch Gettler has is taken from the novel, though Le Chiffre's eye was invented for the movie, so by keeping one thing and changing another they've made a bit of an odd coincidence. I agree they could have made things a bit more clear about this Gettler character. (There are several other characters in the movie who are never actually named - Molloka (the bomber/Madagascar parkour guy), Obanno (the Ugandan who Bond fights in the stairwell), Valenka (Le Chiffre's "companion"), and various other minor goons).
On a different note, this eye business reminds me a bit of Raymond Benson's The Union, where members would have an identifying tattoo on their retina - is Mr.White's organization actually The Union? Le Gerant tortures Bond by lasering his eyes, were Le Chiffre and Gettler punished in the same way? Is Bond 22 going to be NEVER DREAM OF DYING? OMG! Its got the perfect revenge/going after 'the leader' angle for the followup to CR.

Interesting ideas there, but I don't think we should read too much into the defects in their eyes. As far as I understand it, Le Chiffre and Gettler are not actually members of the same organisation. Le Chiffre is an independent terrorist financier, whereas Gettler belongs to the larger group which includes Mr White. Still... nice ideas

Thanks for clearing that up....but i personally think its a shame cus i rather like the idea of Bond actually killing the main villian (if you ignore white) and the idea that lechiffre would fake his death (as he is wanted by terrorists and MI6, CIA etc) and coming back to get revenge/money. After all lechiffre is a bit of a weasel as we know.
But who am i to re-write plots. lol.
Would have been nice to have had some explanation of who he was as suddenly this unexplained character (gettler) is presented to us withh eye patch and all.....
