Ah, I see you already mentioned the telephone booth scene. That is quite possibly one of the greatest Bond moments ever, and easily my favorite in Dr. No. Actually, I think the entirety of Connery's Bond in Dr. No is rivaled only by Dalton and maybe Craig. Hell, if I had to pick one interpretation to be used consistently throughout the series, this might be it.

As you can see, I'm being no less of a fanboy. :) I'll post about more scenes later (I hope to catch it on Spike for the holidays), but just wanted to give this a well-deserved bump in the meantime.

Great topic! I like this one. Might be a good thing to do for all the Bond films eventually. Anyway, mine for Dr No....

"Bond, James Bond"
I know it's an obvious one but for a good reason ; it's brilliant. I love the way Bond uses the cigarette for maximum effect. Sean Connery really couldn't have played the scene any more perfect. I also like the line he follows it up with - "I've no objections". I say this all the time in real life like a bit of a geek. If a girl asks me to hold her shopping bag for her whilst she fiddles around in her handbag looking for her bus pass, I'll almost certainly give off the Connery look and say "I've no objections".

M's office
The first and surely one of the best scene's in M's office. It always feels as though it should be shown in black and white. Anyway, the situation of holding this meeting in the small hours seems ideal for the spy world. The dialogue is excellent and fully establishes Bernard Lee as a legend in the making. I must also say that this is my favourite Ken Adam set from Dr No, full of character and life. It feels so homely.

Pipe crawl
A gloriously creepy scene, full of well planned sound effects and giving off a complete sense of character isolation. Dr No's pipe system doesn't feel like a contrived secret passageway you might find in Blofeld volcano, or even a glossy and geographically convenient ventilation shaft from a Die Hard film. No's pipes actually feel dangerous and completely unintended for human occupation. As Connery slithers inch by inch away from his cell, moments such as an uncomfortable toppling (no pun inten) into a lower passageway, and subseqently a drenching from an unexplained rush of water, add to the viewer fear that attempting this escape may not yet turn out to be the best course of action.

1) The afore-mentioned phone booth moment. I would not want to be Mr. Jones at that moment! I've seen few men ever give a knowing glare as intense as Connery's was. And perfect spy work, following a small, but unmistakable spark of fear that something was not quite right. A staple of the first two films.

2) The dinner scene. I re-read the scene just before watching it, and while I missed the real reason Dr. No lost his hands, the tension was palpable between Bond and No. I could feel his underlying, seething anger at this ridiculous man having horribly murdered two of his friends, and his persistent attempts to deflate Dr. No constitute possibly the best civil meeting Bond has ever had onscreen with a villain before the gloves come off.

3) The tarantula. Despite the visible plate glass, I was chilled to the bone the first time I saw the tarantula emerge from Bond's sheets. Low-key scary scenes like this that really remind us of how vulnerable we still are, despite being so much more advanced in thought than any other creature on the planet.

1) The Casino table scene where Bond introduces himself.

2) When 007 eliminates Professor Dent. That 2nd (or was it 3rd) shot ensuring Dent was dead. Pure Double-00.

3) Jack Lord's introduction as Felix Leiter at Pussfellow's pub. No wonder that was Lord's only appearance as Felix. He gave 007 competition in the 'cool' department.

For me, those two vie incessantly for the number one spot. For sheer "cool", the Casino table scene is impossible to beat; but, 007 telling Professor Dent that he's had his six, then shooting him, then shooting him again shows 007 as a ruthless man who we are all lucky to have on "our side".

For me, I found Dr. No's hand desperately trying to grab hold of the framework in order to pull himself out of the reactor as my third favorite scene.

Wow, there are too many good scenes to narrow down to 3.

However, here we go:-

1) Bond, James Bond - one of the most iconic moments in cinema.

2) Professor Dent picks up the spider cage (Dr No's voice alone scares Dent more than any other villain's assistant)

3) Dinner scene - "Tell me, does toppling American missiles really make up for having no hands?"

I know. There really are. I originally was going to ask for a top-5, but thought that would make responses too lengthy and would ultimately kill the thread. Lord knows I've conceived more than my fair share of DOA threads around here. I wanted to taste just a little success and hit double digit responses, so I went the conservative route.

But if I had gone with 5, I would have entered "Bond, James Bond" as my #4 and Bond's conversation with Dr. No in his lair as #5. (Followed VERY closely with the Dent and spider scene @ #6).

From Russia With Love might prove to be even harder when we get there...

Yes, I wanted to include the killing of Dent, and also Honey walking out of the water too.

And I agree, FRWL will be even harder.

1. Bond, James Bond. Connery is The Man, and the way he carries himself throughout the movie shows it.
2. Honey coming out of the ocean. Wow, as good as she looks today, imagine the shock that bikini, that knife, and those curves had in 1962!
3. Tough picking a number 3, but I'm going with Jack Lord introducing himself. If I didn't want to be James Bond I would want to be America's answer - JL's Felix! :)
