I have noticed that there has been a lot of talk about who side Mathis is on. Now it obviouse that Le Chiffre knew that Bond had discovered his tell. But exactly how did he know. Mathis might have told him. My theory is that when Mathis was 'quitely' telling Vesper in Prive saloon. Le Chiffre heard them. When I went to see CR on a third veiwing, I relised that Mathis and Vesper didn't seem all that far from Le Chiffre and surly Le Chiffre would have heards them.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this. But I might be completely wrong.

That wouldn't make sense. He's doing this eye stuff and afterwards Mathis tells Vesper that LeChiffre is bluffing, though he actually does not.

He must have known it beforehand...

I'm completely sure that there is nothing that would prove Mathis to be either good or evil as he is a perfect option for Bond 22/23

I think Mathis told him...

I fully believed Le Chiffre when he told Bond that Mathis was siding with him..

Vesper is the reason for the leaking of the tell. Mathis is completely innocent. His detention and blurred role in Casino Royale simply sets up an interesting and open-ended plot thread for Bond 22.

That's what I thought. I figured Mathis was on the up-and-up, and Le Chiffre mentioned Mathis being a bad guy to throw Bond further from the idea that Vesper is the double.

As for the tell, I assumed Vesper was the one to tell Le Chiffre, and that Mathis was only speaking loudly to further illustrate the bluff to the audience. The dialouge in that bit always seemed pretty expository, to me.

While Bond was getting his vodka martini from the bar during the tournament's first night, he told BOTH Mathis and Vesper about Le Chiffre's tell.

I believe that it was Vesper who told Le Chiffre that Bond knew about his tell, the following day.

Vesper is the one who told Le Chiffre. Mathis is innocent. Probably.

I think Vesper was the one to tell, but I think she told Mr White, who then told Le Chiffre.

Definitely Vesper. But clearly the implication of Mathis was to try to surprise those in the audience who hadn't read the read the book when Vesper is revealed as the traitor and not a traditional Bond girl.

when Vesper is revealed as the traitor and not a traditional Bond girl.

Except being a traitor is become a part of the traditional Bond girl. Elektra King, Miranda Frost, Vesper Lynd etc.

Good point. I hadn't noticed how that seems to have become a P & W trademark. Though here they do get a pass.

Vesper told him; I believe Mathis is innocent.

Vesper would have also known about the device in Bond's arm after seeing the wire coming out of his arm in the defib scene in the car. So she could have told Le Chiffre about that as well.

If that is the case, why is he protecting her? He tortured her too. No I believe Mathis told Le Chiffre. Vesper was working for Le Chiffre's boss. Le Chiffre knew he had trouble coming up, so he bribed Mathis to work for him.

Mathis? I believe he will be cleared in Bond 22. Part of that "knowing who to trust" lesson as opposed to not trusting anyone.
