So my friend has a 33 pound turkey and needs to know how long it will take to cook. Seems everything I can find online just goes up to 24 pounds. Any turkey cooking experts out there who can help us?

(I've already suggested she get one of those pop-up thingys that tell you when it's done.)

Hehe...

No, this is a real Thanksgiving day question. 33 pounds is a HUGE turkey. Someone told her 15 hours. That can't be right.

I think a 33-lb turkey is possible, for sure.

But it could be a day-long affair cooking it.

Especially now, especially if it's frozen. It needs to start thawing now, if it's to be ready for the oven on Thursday morning.

It also needs to be thawed if it's going to be deep-fried, although I don't think many people choose to deep-fry them. There are some videos on YouTube covering deep-fried turkey horror stories.

And also, happy Thanksgiving John!

Haven't got any clue about cooking turkeys (we don't make 'em that way over here, anyway).

The info on the net indeed all ends at about 24 pounds, but from what I read, cooking time is not proportional to weight (i.e. double weight does not equal double time). I'd estimate about 6 or 6 1/2 hours - but you should definitely start before lunch when you want to have it ready for dinner :)

There is no lunch on Thanksgiving. At least for most.

I'd estimate about 6 hours. But it might be worth investing in a decent meat thermometer just to be sure...

According to www.butterball.com, a 24-30 lbs turkey should be cooked, at 325

I think the rule of thumb is 20 minutes per pound 350 F.

I always do my bird the way my Mom & Grandma did it: Start it the night before ( about 6- 7 pm) 250F. Check through the night that is is basted and has water/broth. around 7 a m I turn the temp. up to 350 until the top begins the brown, then back down to 250 until dinnertime (usually 12:30/1 p m) The bird is moist and falling off the bone.

Good luck!

First thing, where the hell did you get a 33 pound turkey? I'm pretty sure that you should cook it for at least 8 hours, Unless you don't like your guests.:)

Pam's right. 20 minutes a pound. That's a solid 11 hours, my friend. Best wake up early to cook that thing.

Thanks all. I'm not the one cooking it, my friend is, and I'm assuming it's already in the oven (it better be). We'll see how it turns out.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
