For those who were not able to see the TV Special Becoming Bond on ITV2 last night, here`s a rundown of what was in it.

I`m splitting this review into two parts, because it`s just so long to read. Part two follows as soon as I can type it.

The special began with Craig, sporting a beard and moustache, and looking very dapper in a grey suit and waistcoat, being interviewed sitting on one of those director chairs.

CRAIG: When I became an actor, I never fantasised about playing James Bond. As a kid, yeah, but that was being James bond, that was something else, that was (laughs) fantasy.

A narrator mentioned that after a two year search, and months of speculation, EON announced Craig to the media as the new Bond on 14th October 2005.

Over this narration were shots of the media and their cameras, Wilson and Broccoli taking their seats at the unvailing and bizzarely, a long shot of the boat that brought Craig to the press conference, but no close up of him!!

We then saw a shot of Craig firing the gun from the gunbarrel and then more shots of Wilson and Broccoli as the narrator went on to say that, for the producers this unvailing was a culmination of events which started over 6 years ago, when they finaly secured the rights to the Casino Royale novel.

The narrator makes a gaff by saying that "the 1963 (sic) film Dr. No, is credited as the first James Bond movie..." and goes on to say that the character made his screen debut almost a decade earlier. We then see Babs who takes over by explaining that Casino Royale the novel was made into a television play in America, and mentions Barry Nelson`s casting.

She explained that because of the TV play, the rights were tied up and when Cubby Broccoli and Saltzman made the deal with Fleming for the Bond series, they couldn`t acquire those rights. She added that those that had the rights made the Casino Royale film in 1967, which was a spoof and said that it was a precursor to Austin Powers. In her mind the book had never been done properly.

We then see Wilson, minus beard and moustache, for the first time.

WILSON: We got into a law suit with SONY pictures in 1997, and as part of the resolution of that law suit, we got a hold of the rights, and so we were sitting round saying what do we wanna do for the next film, it seemed like this was the great opportunity, the opportunity had been missed all the way along and we could finally make Casino Royale the way it should be.

The narrator goes on to say that the producers decided from the outset that they wanted to remain as faithful as possible to Fleming`s original novel, and that this is Bond at the beginning of his career, which automatically rules out Pierce Brosnan to play the part of 007.

We now see Campbell for the first time.

CAMPBELL: Having decided to do the book, it`s supposed to be Bond when he just gets his 00 licence, and Pierce is, er..too old for that.

After the narrator tells the audience that Campbell directed Brosnan`s first Bond film, Campbell goes on:

CAMPBELL; Clearly, someone else had to do it, because, um, we needed someone younger.

Broccoli and Wilson, (now with beard and moustache) are seen side by side, but it`s Babs who does the talking. She mentions that when they decided they were going to make CR, the biggest challenge was trying to find an actor who could play Bond at the beginning of his career as a double-0.

DEBBIE McWILLIAMS (casting director): One of the very first names that came up in discussion was Daniel Craig.

We then get a potted history of Craig`s acting career, from Our friends in the North, upto Tomb Raider and Road to Pedition.

DEBBIE McWILLIAMS: Barbara Broccoli, the producer said, "What do you think of him?" I said I think he`s fantastic. (beat) For Bond? And she went, "Well, yes, what else?"

The narrator mentions Craig`s unique looks and acting style and goes on to say what other films he had done, citing Slyvia, Layer Cake and Munich.

CAMPBELL: I was rather like Debbie, (casting director) I wasn`t sure because I had to get out of my mind set that it was Pierce or Roger Moore, or whatever. We had, you know, a different tone to the story.

CRAIG: It was completely from left field. I just didn`t see myself doing it. I didn`t see myself taking on something like this because I had other ideas, other things I wanted to do as an actor. Probably because of the fear of the unknown, as much as anything, because unless you get involved in something like this, you don`t know what it takes to make a movie like this.

He added:

CRAIG: I kinda figured they were covering their bases, they needed to talk to as many people as possible, and see what reaction they were gonna get. And I just considered myself to be part of that process and, very nice, thank you very much but, you know. Ha. Ha. let`s move on. And they weren`t. They were serious. (laughs)

BROCCOLI: The character that Ian Fleming created is a very complex character, and has been played obviously by many actors, and each one of those actors has sort of focused on different elements and for this particular one, we thought Daniel was the right guy.

It`s mentioned that by Sept 2005, the producers finally had a script that they felt truely represented the book.

CAMPBELL: You know, it`s a harder script. It`s a much more realistic script that goes back to From Russia With Love.

Paul Haggis is then interviewed.

HAGGIS: I love the idea of someone becoming James Bond, and seeing that journey, but also emotionally what it took to become James Bond, because the Bond we know is someone who is emotionally shut off, and certainly Fleming talks about that in his book.

CRAIG: The script was very exciting to read. I saw potential that I hadn`t thought of before, and I saw other things that could be put into the film, which I thought other people hadn`t seen before. So, all of those things just tied in and it became from that point onwards, it was, there was no turning back.

It`s then mentioned that Craig was odds on favourite to take the part, but the producers still had to convince the studio. They needed to see that he was up to the role.

Over this narration we see a website quoting odds on the actors favourite to take the part, with Craig at 1/3, followed by Julian McMahon at 4/1, Clive Owen at 6/1, Hugh Jackman at 10/1 and both Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor at 12/1.

We hear from the narrator that in September 2005 Craig, along with four other actors, (not mentioned) was invited to Pinewood Studios to film a screentest.

We then see Campbell, (filmed at the screentest itself) saying:

CAMPBELL: Well, I must say the tests that we are doing are fairly elaborate tests, and we`re doing sort of a couple of major scenes, to be honest.

We see a dark haired girl in a trouser suit, in what looks like a hotel room, walk away from a camera and turn to face someone, (we don`t see who).

Craig then does a voiceover whilst we see the crew preparing to get everything ready for the tests.

CRAIG VOICEOVER: They need to see what they are getting themselves in for. You gotta go see if you can do it.

We then see a soundstage, with the camera rolling on one of the tests, but the TV camera filming this is very far away, and though we see two men in hand to hand combat, it`s hard to make out who`s doing the test, although one of the guys DOES have light hair, so it COULD have been Craig.

(I would imagine this would have been the hotel fight scene from OHMSS. This has been used before when screen testing a new Bond).

Craig continuing the story but in the present.

CRAIG: That was a day that really was tricky, because that was a full day`s filming and I think that at the end of that, I, that was a realisation that suddenly, "Oh, God, what am I doing?"

We then see a number of newspaper articles proclaiming Craig as the new Bond.

CRAIG VOICEOVER: Barbara wanted to tell me herself, and, em, I had already said I had gone out shopping, and was somewhere else, and had moved on, then the phone call and she sort of went, "Over to you kiddo." And that was it.

We see the press launch again, and the narrator mentions over these scenes that even with several A list movies under his belt, Craig had managed to keep a reasonably low profile with the press - until now, (the press launch)

Craig takes over the story.

CRAIG: I woke up in the morning and got driven down to HMS Belfast, where the Royal Marines were waiting. (laughs). Sorry, I haven`t actually thought about it, or spoken to anyone about it.

We then see a Major Paul Kearney of the Royal Marines saying:

KEARNEY: We got three ridge raiders (?) (boats I assume) down there, and er, we`re gonna give him his opportunity to arrive on the scene as James Bond, with a little bit of panache.

We then see Craig first in suit and sunglasses, walking to and getting onto the boat and shaking hands with Kearney. We then see Craig look at a camera that is on the boat and he says, "Yes, mate?" A reporter asks him how he`s feeling.

CRAIG: Oh, you know. Ask me in an hour`s time, (and he smiles).

Over scenes of Craig getting ready to depart in the boat, he carries on.

CRAIG: (still talking to the reporter) I`m pinching myself, basically. (then) I gotta go. (the reporter says "good luck, I`ll see you later" and Craig replies, "cheers, mate.")

Over more scenes of Craig getting ready to depart, there`s another voiceover from Campbell.

CAMPBELL: They`re be all, you know, a ravenous media wanting to pass judgement on, you know, as always with Bond. That`s what happens. You`re guilty until proven innocent.

We then see all the boats going towards HMS Belfast.

CRAIG VOICEOVER: I`m just glad that I didn`t fall off. I mean, that`s really the only thing that really matters. And if I had fallen off I would have swam to the other shore, and said "Thanks. Good night. I had a go but it didn`t work." (smiles).

The interviewer then asks "You had a life vest on?"

Craig smiles and says.

CRAIG: Oh, yeah. That was, kind of, apparantly a sign that I couldn`t swim, or something.

We then see a caption which reads: Earlier...

A Marine is talking to Craig, saying that he has to put the vest on in case he falls off and knocks himself out, and Craig agrees. He then puts on the vest.

CRAIG: I should have worn arm bands. (beat) Orange arm bands. It would have been a much better look.

Craig departs the boat and walks up the gangway onto HMS Belfast where he faces a mass of photographers.

We then cut to the press conference itself and hear a couple of questions being asked, which Craig answers.

The anchor man at the conference tells everybody that they have now finished and "tries" to ask Craig one final question:

ANCHOR MAN: Daniel, time has actually run out, but can I ask you one final -. You`ve been now exposed here. Do you, in a sense, have any worry -

CRAIG (cutting in): About feeling uncomfortable? No! (laughs)

The audience gives him a round of applause and there`s a fade out.

INTERMISSION

PART TWO FOLLOWS.

It was a fantastic programme, with mouth watering clips from CR, and great insights into Daniel who comes across like a true gent and dedicated 007 actor!

I saw it too, it was a really great programme with alot to say from Daniel Craig.

Alot of new things, like before that fateful press conference and some things from the podcasts. A couple of new scenes and I was surprised to hear them using music from the soundtrack.

Thanks very much for typing this all out - appreciate the effort :) The programme sounds excellent. Hopefully the sort of thing that may turn up on the DVD. Oh and I'm liking the way that they directly addressed the criticism of Craig wearing the life jacket. Very cool. Looking forward to part 2.

Here`s Part Two of my Becoming Bond TV Special review, for those who didn`t see it.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS FURTHER ON.

Wilson talks about filming in Prague.

WILSON: I think that going to Prague, where we hadn`t made a film before, it was new for all of us. That, I think, energised us too. There was no familiar. There was just, everything was kinda for the first time.

We then see Craig doing stunt rehearsals, working with the stunt team at a studio in Prague. We see Craig really throwing himself into it.

The narrator tells us that as this is a tougher, harder Bond film, Campbell is keen to see Craig in as much action as possible.

GARY POWELL (stunt co-ordinator): We`ve had Daniel for a couple of days now, he`s basically straight in at the deep end, he`s got four big scenes involving action, coming straight out. Well, he`s obviously done bits before on films: Tomb Raider, Layer Cake, he`s done his own sort of bits. But we always, when we get people, we have to sort of go back to basics.

The interviewer asks Ben Cooke, Craig`s stunt double, (who bizzarely is almost bald and doesn`t even remotely resemble Craig) asks:

INTERVIEWER: It looks like he`s got the hang of that.

COOKE: Getting there, yeah. (laughs) No, no, he`s good.

INTERVIEWER: Has he been a good pupil, so far?

COOKE (hesitates): When he listens, yeah. (laughs). No, no, he`s good. He`s quite attentive, actually. He`s got a good attention to detail and he wants it to look right and he wants to do it right.

CRAIG; This is the work you gotta do. You gotta work hard, that`s it. Work hard to get it right, or drill it to get it right. We start, we`re gonna kick off this friday, and just looking forward to it. I just really want to get it done.

We then see the first day`s shooting with Craig in his floral pattened shirt, being directed by Campbell.

CRAIG VOICEOVER: The worst thing is, and anybody, from crew member to actor, to anybody, the worst day is the first day of shooting. Putting film in the camera is for real. The next thing they are gonna film is gonna be in the cinemas. And it`s nerve wracking. We started off by doing a sequence where I basically was kicking the [censored] out of people for a week, and actually I think that was the best way to start. It kinda broke the ice somewhat.

We then see Craig fighting inside a room, shooting people and then throwing someone out of a window.

INTERVIEWER (to Campbell): Martin, the phrase, "hit the ground running" springs to mind.

CAMPBELL (laughs): Well, I mean look around us, we`ve got this big scene, which is the end of a big action scene right at the beginning of the movie, and I like everybody to get up and really go for it, you know? Baptism by fire.

CRAIG (laughing): We`ll see what happens when we do the love scenes. If he`s shouting as much as that I`m not sure it`s going to work.

CAMPBELL (laughing at Craig`s statement): I`m even worse during the love scenes, let me tell you, my God.

We are then introduced to the other screenwriters, Robert Wade and Neal Purvis.

PURVIS: We thought there is no point in doing the book unless you do do it as closely as possible. Generally, Bond films, his character remains the same from beginning to the end. And this was an opportunity to show how he develops, and changes.

Broccoli talks a bit about Fleming`s life, how he was a confirmed batchelor, and his forthcoming marriage and his writing of Casino Royale.

We then see a scene from the film with Craig and Caterina Murino, followed by a few words from Murino about what the scene is about.

The narrator then introduces the character of Vesper and we see a scene where she sits down in the plane and says "I`m the money." Craig looks at her admiringly and says, totally deadpan, "Every penny of it." Priceless.

Eva Green then talks about the character of Vesper, and we see another bit from the plane sequence, (but not the comment about his bottom).

There follows voiceovers from Broccoli and Craig as we see a scene of Bond and Vesper in a car.

BROCCOLI: She is, (Vesper) the women, that, you know, places the biggest mark upon Bond, the character, for his whole life.

CRAIG: I`m sure he looked at her file and looked at her photograph and thought, "Oh, this looks rather interesting," and when she comes along and she happens to be bright, intelligent as well as beautiful, then he becomes more intrigued by her, and falls in love. That`s really the bottom line. He falls in love with her.

There`s then an amusing scene with Judi Dench as M, which introduces her character to us. We find out that she has played the part for 11 years, and is the only character from the Brosnan era to return.

Campbell does a voiceover regarding Dench as M while we see shots of her at work in the film. He also mentions the continuity issue regarding Dench M`s character.

CAMPBELL: If you think about it, on a time line, it makes no sense because we have a new Bond but we have Judi back. The truth is, there is no way you could not cast her in the part again, no matter how screwed up the time line is. She`s just M and there is nobody else.

CRAIG: I think the fact that M is Judi and therefore female is an incredibly important part of what Bond now is, because he is a bit of a mysoganist, and she is the perfect balance. Basically she looks after him, she keeps him alive.

There is then a scene with Bond and M, which is more of the scene in the trailer, (the blunt instrument speech).

DENCH: Fortunately, I don`t have to do any of those things like, put this piece of (starts laughing) machinery together and fit in a few wires and things. I can`t remember, what Bond. I remember watching it and my husband saying "You`re not going to try and save the world, are you Jude, cos we`ve had it." She then cracks up laughing completely. She then manages to control herself and continue by saying, Thank goodness, I don`t have to do that again, as I can`t work an ironing board.

We then see the film unit going from Prague to the bahamas.

CRAIG VOICEOVER: Well, of course it was a whole change of pace because we were in the caribbean and there`s half the crew up to their waists in water, filming off a beautiful beach in the bahamas. I mean, it sounds awful, doesn`t it? (laughs).

There follows shots of Craig coming out of the water in those shorts.

CRAIG: Yes, that`s right, I tried on quite a few pair of swimming trunks. Ursula Andress, yeah, that was me. (begins laughing and talking to himself) What was I thinking? It`s only a tiny moment in the movie, I promise you. (beat - then laughs) Hopefully not that tiny. (laughs again) I take that back.

We then see Craig back in his floral pattern shirt for the first action sequence in the movie, the chase sequence between Bond and Mollaka. There`s an interview with Sebastien Foucan, who plays Mollaka, talking about his craft. This interview and Craig`s following comments are intersperced with the chase sequence in the movie.

CRAIG: It`s street art, I think, as well as a sport. It`s an art form. And Sebastian is particulary good at it.

Craig talking about the fight on the crane, 200 feet up.

CRAIG: That was a classic example, as we rehearsed this fight on the ground and you do that over and over again, you do the fight, and that`s great, and you do that, and we`re really good at that, I like that bit. Then you get 200 feet up on a crane. There`s no time to have a fear of heights, you gotta get up there and do it. It was borderline fun and fear. I`m not going to rush up there again, in the near future. You`ve got two lonely figures running across a crane and jumping from one crane to the other crane. There`s no way to fake it. They do it, they actually do it.

Then the narrator talks about the tabloids not giving Craig an easy ride.

CRAIG: It kinda did shake me, but it really was, "oh, there we go, that`s what we`ve been waiting for, and now it`s happened, so let`s move on." He goes on: There`s nothing I can do, there`s nothing I can do. It`ll come from, you know, I was wearing the wrong colour laces, probably, I don`t know.

Campbell mentions that Broccoli and Wilson have seen all this negativity before, and with all Bonds, everybody passes judgement. Broccoli mentions that when Connery was hired, everyone said it was a disaster because it wasn`t David Niven.

CRAIG: If you`re asking me whether it spurred me on a bit, yes it did spur me on, and I did think, okay, well let`s make it, - it was going to be good before, now it`s really going to be good.

We head back to Prague, for the final 3 month shoot and we see the special effects team doing their stuff.

Then there is an interview with screenwriter Robert Wade:

WADE: James Bond has stumbled upon a network for moving money around to terrorists. It turns out that it`s a network run by a man called Le Chiffre.

CRAIG: I manage to foil one of his terrorist plots, and therefore he`s got quite a deficit in his funds, so he needs to raise some money very quickly, so he sets up this high stakes poker game.

We then see a scene where Bond first meets Le Chiffre at the casino.

Campbell talks about how difficult it is to film the casino scene and Craig carries on the point.

CRAIG: When you film one person, you gotta film the other person, and it`s gotta look like they are both looking at each other. Invarably, at some point, somebody will look at each other, and they won`t look like they are looking at each other. Now, add to that the fact that they have cards in front of them, and a pile of chips, which every time you cut to them, on a continuity level, has to be accurate.

There`s a few words from Mads Mikkelsen then its back to Craig, doing a voiceover whilst we see scenes from the casino sequence.

CRAIG: Even though we knew it wasn`t our money and we know we are filming a card game, when you`re pushing sort of 50 million into the middle of the table it didn`t matter, it didn`t matter that we knew that he was going to lose or I was going to lose.

Wilson tells us that they hired 9 people to play at the poker table and had to educate all the actors so they look like they are poker pros.

There is then an interview with Jeffrey Wright, who plays Felix Leiter, on the card scenes.

WRIGHT: Frankly, it feels very natural, you know, feels very natural and very easy, doesn`t feel like it`s forced, and it`s owed to the amount of rehearsal we put in, around the poker table, away from set and on set (smiles).

CRAIG: Michael, (Wilson) is a very keen card player, so he organised a few games, which were, good fun.

WILSON: He, (Craig) cleaned me out twice, so I haven`t invited him back. (smiles).

We then see more shots of Craig fighting and the Aston roaring away.

The narrator finishes by saying that as the production went on, it became clear to the crew at least, that Craig was the right choice, but what the rest of the world would think, is out of Craig`s hands.

CRAIG: I think we have made a remarkable movie. What people then think of it, that`s in the lap of the Gods. It just depends if we get it right. I`m not lying when I say to you that the only way to do that is to forget that it`s a Bond movie. Is to get on and make it the best movie you can. And all the Bonds sort of sorts itself out.

BROCCOLI: The world has changed a lot. It`s a more serious world and we expect our heroes to, I think, fight the battles with better judgment and more responsibility and with less frivolity.

CRAIG: From tiny decisions in costume to whether we blow 14 tankers up, or not, they all have to be thought through and all have to be thought through with exactly the same energy, because a lot of people are going to be watching and a lot of people have very high expectations.

END OF PROGRAMME

In conclusion, I felt this was a really well made programme, certainly much better than other Bond specials ITV has done.

The only criticism I have is the ridiculous time ITV decided to show this programme. 11.30 in the evening is not going to be a good ratings winner. I cannot for the life of me think how Broccoli and Wilson would have allowed this special, (which is, after all, publicising their film) to go out at such a time.

ITV usually film each Bond premiere in London, so it would have been a much better idea to have shown this special BEFORE the premiere, to give the audience at home an idea of what the film makers are trying to do with this new Bond and then show the premiere, all allowing for excellent publicity to get people into the cinemas. A wasted opportunity, IMO.

But hey, what do I know?

Best

Yes, but 11pm, even on ITV`s main station, is still too late.

Any anti Craig audiences out there would, having had a chance to see this special at a more audience friendly time, be able to see what EON/Craig have been doing, to show them that this film is still about Bond, (albeit with a new actor) and any fears they may have, might have been dispelled through watching it, and they might end up going to see the film.

Who is going to stay up till 11pm, and watch a programme for an hour, if you`re now not interested in Bond, because you don`t like the lead actor?

Nobody.

As I said earlier, a wasted opportunity.

I enjoyed watching Becoming Bond last night. I get the impression that this will appear as an extra on the DVD release - it just had that 'Bonus Documentary' look about it. The only shame was the fact that we didn't get to see any of Craig's screen test.

Thanks Andy...a great review. :P :P

The timing of the broadcast was indeed diabolical - well past my weeknight bed time, so I taped it. Nice to hear from Mr Haggis - I'd forgotten what he looked like...

One thing...Purvis and Wade seemed half-asleep, like they'd just come out of the casino at three a.m.....:) :)

It was a great programme indeed. It was slightly reminisant of the Script to Screen for DAD, as it didn't just cover all the positive aspects that the producers/studio would want to concentrate on, and it seemed surprisingly candid at times. Did anyone else think that Purvis & Wade seem hacked off (perhaps they had just found out they weren't required for Bond22). Haggis in contrast seemed very likable and genuinely excited (please get him back on polishing duties for the next one). If anything though, it felt a little *too* condensed in the second half.

I believe they also showed a clip of the actual "Film" gunbarrel (which seems quite different to the trailer gun-barrel), and played what sounds like the film's version of the Cornell theme over it (which is different to the other versions that have been doing the rounds).

I just noticed how wierd Eva looks during 'The Train' scene, her eyes pop out and her face cringes when she says "... hence the chip on your shoulder..." anyway she still looks cute :)

Hmmm... in "The Filming" video, there seems to be a vastly different gunbarrely logo. Is that what it is like in the film?

It also sounds that from that clip it is the YKMN they use in the film. I like it immensely.

The version of YKMN sounded like a 'live' version - not a polished studio recording. I can't imagine that is the one to be used in the film. I know the producers wanted gritty, but I think using that version of the song would be too much grit for my liking.

As for the gunbarrel...judgement reserved.
