How was he set to die originally?
Wow. It's been a while since I've posted on here. This sure brings back nostalgia. Sorry to resurrect a long dead thread, and for the super late response lol but here's some trivia for this sequence.
Basically in the original Dec '05 draft of Casino Royale, Carlos was shot in the back by Bond, before he could detonate the tanker. Not really very creative. Then there were rumors that the sequence had been changed and that there would be far more effects in the set piece. In the script the sequence had no explosions. The bus crash was there but it made no mention of any explosion or fireball. There was even a brief vehicle to vehicle chase between Bond and Carlos where Bond was supposed to actually commandeer the tow tug that scrapes the tanker. That idea actually made it into the Blood Stone video game where Bond uses the tow truck to chase the giant dump truck through the streets of Bangkok.
At one point they actually were thinking of blowing up the tanker. Someone on these forums who knew someone who worked on the tank sequence in Goldeneye as well as the MIA sequence in CR, had told me that he was told the Tanker was built to be blown up. And if you watch the behind the scenes features on the sequence from the collector's edition DVD they reveal that this was in fact even storyboarded. In this variation of the sequence Carlos kicks Bond through the side door of the tanker and onto the tarmac. Bond was to grab a hold of the hose dangling behind the tanker and be dragged for a bit. That part was actually why it was dropped. Campbell said it was unrealistic because Bond would have been skinned. I would have solved that by have him ride on the door that falls off. Either way, as Bond is being dragged he was supposed to use the gun's muzzle flash to ignite the fuel leaking from the Tanker with eventually catches up to the tanker which explodes. There is even a shot of Carlos getting consumed in the cab by the flames from the fireball. Perhaps that firey end carried over to Elvis in QOS.
Those are the two confirmed alternate versions of the ending of the airport sequence. I was told by another source, who may or may not have been legit that there was an elaborate scene with the tanker turning on it's side and Bond running along the length of the tank before leaping to tarmac before the skidding truck was to crash into a parked dc-3 aircraft before exploding. Not sure of that was true or not but for what it's worth I've heard both Campbell and Craig say that there were as many as 14 different versions of how to end the airport sequence before we got the one with Carlos blowing himself up, not unlike the two men in straw hats from the original novel. They went back to the source for inspiration. So far Carlo's demise is my favorite Craig era Bond villain death. It really is a neat twist and a nice adaption of something from the original novel.
