Third Actor Declines Chance to Play James Bond

Following reports that actors Clive Owen and Hugh Jackman both declined offers to play James Bond in the upcoming feature "Casino Royale," a grassroots campaign by fans saw thousands of copies of the Ian Fleming novel mailed to Shakespearean trained actor Rikki Lee Travolta of the famous entertainment family with notes imploring him to accept the role.

As of October 10, 2005, over 135,000 copies of "Casino Royale" had been received by Travolta

Translation : EON completely ignores Travolta's pleas to audition, so he claims to have turned them down, in a bid to attract some "The Bond people were considering this guy? There must be something to him!" publicity.

That is the funniest thing I've read since Gulshan Grover's article on the Bond villains.

No, but I can say, "milking it for all it's worth before time runs out" really slow.

Clive Owen, Hugh Jackman, and Rikki Lee Travolta were the three that I really thought could pull the part off. I'm sure whoever Eon ends up with will be good, but I will always wonder "what could have been" (3 times over). Of those remaining, I guess I would hope for Julian McMahon. I liked Dominic West in an odd way but he seems out of the running.

Actually there is one tiny bit of information that's interesting about this, it does say that Michael G. Wilson's preferred candidate is Julian McMahon. Has this been mentioned before? It states that Babs likes Daniel Craig and Campbell likes Visjnic, both of which we knew, but I don't believe its ever been mentioned before that MGW had a favorite. If this is true, then I'd say McMahon's chances have just increased significantly...

Good catch, dinovelvet, but I wouldn't take that bit of info anymore seriously than the rest of this article. Besides, didn't McMahon already say he was out of the running?

Who knows? He was on Leno a few weeks ago and the subject of Bond came up, he didn't really say anything to suggest he was in or out of the running. The audience cheered when he did his 'Bond, James Bond' though...perhaps Michael G. happened to be watching ??!

Julian McMahon said in one interview a while ago that things had gone quiet and then mentioned in another, in a U.K. article about the new season of Nip/Tuck, that it was unlikely but he was glad to have been associated with it. Nothing definitive. As Dinovelvet says, he hasn't commented either way since so he may well still be in contention. He certainly hasn't done any screen testing at Pinewood lately, though.

First Jackman, then Owen, and now this. EON will pay for letting another perfect candidate slip through their fingers. Whoever they hire will always be living in Rikki Lee's shadow. It's a damn shame.

I have an announcement to make. I am officially turning down the role of James Bond. I haven't been approached by the producers or contacted for a screentest or been mentioned by anyone involved in the next movie, but before they do consider me, or screentest, I have to decline.

I find that number to be way off the mark.

That would easily be 10 printings worth.

Maybe 1350 fans sent 100 emails or something.

Thank you for turning it down, Mr Travolta

If picked, when you would say "Bond, James Bond" I would hear "Barbarino, Vinny Barbarino" (Hello...Is this thing on??? Its from Welcome back Kotter for gods sake!!)

I would hear "What?... Where?"

This Travolta thing is just hilarious though. It's always been the same writer bringing his name up, and apparently he also has one fan as well. The other 134,998 fans appear to be entirely fictional.

Anyway, he's declined the role so I guess that closes the book on that discussion. Too bad, so sad...

Hugh Jackman, Clive Owen and Rikki Lee Travolta. Yeah, there's three names I link together. Do I feel sorry for EON.

Maybe now he'll have more time to devote to his Duran Duran tribute band.

If he was on the Tonight Show, I guess he really must have at least some fans.

But that crap about the 135,000 copies of the dvd: absolute stinking rubbish. His press agent has a great future in national politics.

Call me an idiot, but is it possible that Travolta was indeed considered for Bond? I mean, I just can't understand why his name would come up again and again and again. No one's PR person is that overzealous, surely? On the whole, the following article seems pretty solid (at least, I can well imagine both Owen and Jackman being offered Bond and passing on it), so.... I dunno. Could the Travolta thing actually be true?

Before anyone scoffs, just remember the initial reactions of many of us a few months ago when we first heard about Craig as a potential 007. :)

Yeah, I know Travolta is a joke around here (and I've joined in the fun myself on occasion), but if you look at a pic like this one....

Posted Image

....can you in all honesty say that he looks a million miles away from someone who might be considered for Bond? In comparison to Craig, the guy who's just landed the flippin' gig?

It sounds silly, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if The Powers That Be did consider Travolta. Quite why they even thought of looking at a fairly obscure American actor with a name that, frankly, seems utterly comical when linked with the name "James Bond".... well, that to me is a mystery. How did he come to their attention in the first place?

Oh, well. I wouldn't be so quick to mock the Travolta stories, is all I'm saying (well, the story about 123 million copies of "Casino Royale" being sent by pleading fans seems rather tall, but the essence of the rumours, i.e. that Travolta was a candidate - seems reasonable).

We know that TBTB were very much thinking outside the box in considering people like Cavill, Craig, O'Lachlan and Visnjic, so why not Travolta?

In some alternate universe, are Bond fans celebrating the appointment of a 22-year-old Brit for Bond 6 and pouring scorn on rumours that Eon looked at a Croatian actor? :)

Come on Loomis--Travolta pulled the same nonsense in 2001--there were hot rumors that he was being seriously considered then if Pierce did not come back. And they said the same things like he was a rising star with many movie roles to come and alas he's done NOTHING since then because nobody wants him for anything in movies. It's all bull. Certain Rikki groupies just push the lie--they say he'll get Thor or some big movie instaed this time--he won't, you'll see. If he had been offered Bond, he'd so take it--this claim of his is such a farce. He has no movie career and has very little potential for one and therefore he turned down Bond--yeah right. :)

Exactly what most of us (myself included, I'm sure) said when rumours first surfaced about Craig being considered. Exactly what most of us probably thought when we first heard the name "Goran Visnjic". Exactly what most of us thought when we saw those first Ewan Stewart stories. Well, okay, Ewan Stewart - that was all bull, but you get my point.
