Clive Owen: "I have always wanted to be James Bond

'Clive Owen was interviewed for the June 2005 issue of Cosmopolitan (UK). As usual, the interviewer's questions eventually turned to the topic of James Bond:
You keep getting tipped as the new James Bond. How does that feel?
"I have no problems being associated with James Bond. All I have to do is wait for someone to bring it up and I say, `No, it`s all rumor,` because that's all it's ever been."
OK, so if you could be any action hero, which one would it be?
[Laughing] "James Bond 007. I have always wanted to be James Bond. I'll pour it all out right now. Why won't they offer it to me?"'
I've always thought he wanted it.
Interesting days, these.

This doesn't really give us any new information one way or the other. Some of us are going to remain convinced that he's just being coy, and some are going to remain convinced that he's being sarcastic because he doesn't want the role. I'm sure he's being deliberately ambiguous.

Pure guesswork on my part, mind you.
And, yes, I think Owen sounds as sarcastic as heck in that interview.

Then again maybe they have and haven't said anything.
edit: In either case, I'm hoping as an extra featurette on the DVD that they show people's auditions.

He should be thankful for all of the Bond speculation. Without it, I never would have bought and watched Closer. Without it, I wouldn't have downloaded those BMW movies, which, let's face it, were not that great except for Owen's obvious "audition" for Bond. Without the speculation, not nearly as many people would have gone to see Sin City. He knows this, and he's mocking all of those people who went to see him perform because of their love of the Bond franchise, and he is just riding this to make himself look as cool as possible, no matter who he ticks off in the process. As I've said, I have lost a great deal of respect for Clive Owen. I still want to see him as Bond, but my enthusiasm for that is much less than it has been in the past.

1. We've had so many stories from sources as solid as Variety lately that were either wrong or typos or something not completely right.
2. This is the June issue, assuming it's out now and since Brosnan was announced in June of '94, maybe, just maybe, Owen is tipping his hand, thinking it may not be any harm considering all the other names being floated and it's so close to the announcement date.
At least he did say he was glad to be associated with Bond, something I don't think he's said in any past interview.

After all, it must be very flattering for an actor to be thought of as a perfect choice for Bond.... and to be regarded, as Owen is, as the "Bond in waiting" by many must be even more flattering - after all, it means people think you're incredibly handsome and sexually attractive. Perhaps Owen gets a kick out of being considered the perfect James Bond (and, therefore, the perfect male).

Maybe Clive saw what an uproar his comment of "I'm going to be very busy" caused - and he figured that if he says "I want to be Bond" the coverage will be off the charts!

Everyone wants to be James Bond. But still, I'm quite suprised he admitted that.OK, so if you could be any action hero, which one would it be?

Its probably going to be someone who needs the career boost. Who fits that outline? Any suggestions?
Hmmm.... well, I guess the careers of Gruffudd and McMahon may do well out of FANTASTIC FOUR, and Craig looks set for an upcoming Spielberg film. Not saying those guys are megastars, or even on the verge of becoming huge, but they may not "need" Bond all that much. Who's left, then? Jack Davenport, perhaps, and Dominic West. Purefoy, maybe. But all those actors seem far more likely than people like Owen, Jackman and Bale.

Owen now gives an even bigger glue to his desire/inclintaion to do Bond than at the Sin City premiere.
Methinks an announcement is not far away. Is it, Mr Wilson?

"I think (Owen is) out of the running.I was reading last night that he is to start filming a movie in February 2006 ( cant remember which one at the moment)."

ETA: Going by an article in today's Today's Telegraph Magazine (the Saturday mag of The Daily Telegraph), it looks as though Owen will be, as he said a while back, "very busy" - so much so that we won't be seeing him in CASINO ROYALE.

It seems he will be working solidly for at least a year, which means he might not be ready to don a tuxedo any time soon, despite the recent headline in OK! magazine that I flourish before him: 'The name could be Bond for this chiselled Chancer'. He laughs. So has he been asked? 'No, never. And in any case, I've got three films lined up, all really interesting with great directors. So I'm booked out.'
So, then, it would appear that Owen DEFINITELY won't be Bond. Not only is he going to be too busy for CASINO ROYALE, but one infers that he'd much rather make "really interesting" films with "great directors" than don 007's tux. Can't blame him, I suppose.

Doesn't fit, though, with the "nudge, wink" 'make me an offer' does it?
As in "I know I'm fully booked for 2006 but make me an offer anyway so I can say I'm too busy".
Owen will be Bond. Forget the rest.

But, nah, he won't be Bond. He's made it clear enough now. I think we'd better forget about Owen.

Well, here's a bit of ammunition for you, David: note that Owen says he has three films lined up, but I thought we knew only of two: Spike Lee's INSIDE MAN and CHILDREN OF MEN. Could it be that the third one is CASINO ROYALE? After all, maybe Martin Campbell, who directed BEYOND BORDERS, is a great director in Owen's eyes.
But, nah, he won't be Bond. He's made it clear enough now. I think we'd better forget about Owen.
Loom, Owen will be Bond.
Or would EON prefer Gruffud, Purefoy, Craig, a knackered un-loved Brozza?
A quote, I think, from you're favourite Bond movie; "Make your choice".
