O.k. here I go to start rumor # 1,200,000, it seems James Purefoy left the production of the Movie "V for Vendetta" for misterious undisclosed reasons, and now he has been replaced by Hugo Weaving of Matrix/LOTR fame, could it be he has been signed by EON, and left Vendetta to work on Casino Royale?? :)

Interesting Alex Z--though since this movie is filming now it would in no way interfere with CR and there would be no reason for Purefoy to quit now if he happpened to be lucky enough to get Bond. So I in no way is this a sign he got Bond. Secondly isn't Purefoy tied up for HBO's Rome for the next couple years anyway? Interesting that we haven't heard Purefoy in rumors for a long time--perhaps earlier rumors about him were off the mark or the Rome series puts him out or maybe he may still be possible. I wonder what happened to cause him to quit or be tossed--creative differences or they weren't impressed possibly. Regardless this wouldn't seem to be related to Bond at all.

Maybe he's a slow reader and it takes him 9 months of memorize a script? :)

I don't think so. This is the latest from the Wachowskis, and the starring role in it would have had a very good chance of launching Purefoy into the A-list (as it re-did for Keanu, whose career had been stalling when he made THE MATRIX). He would hardly jump ship from that to star as James Bond, which is only ever going to be B-list, because the character's what people really go for, not the actor, who has now been replaced several times. Must be something else.

He'd make quite a good Bond, though. Pretty safe choice.

I'd be fine with him - looks-wise he's a shoe in. The schedules don't seem to clash to much with Bond (which won't start until January), so I wouldn't read too much into this.

No. Why would he jump ship in the middle of filming for a movie that doesn't start filming till next year. The line from AICN: "Remember that the character Purefoy was playing always wears a mask, so it's quite possible they will not have to reshoot any of his stuff."

Makes no sense. I'm sure its personal reasoning or something.

He certainly looks the part. It is strange that he left this project. To me, it's a real sign that he might be taking the Bond gig. Everyone says that he'd have time, because Bond doesn't start shooting until January. But a Bond film is grueling, as is "V" I'm sure. This does seem to be some pretty solid evidence that Purefoy is in the frame. It would not surprise me terribly if he's announced, and he could do the job. Owen is probably to "big" for it.

Mi6 is saying that the candidate that they "exclusively" tabbed as the favorite of Eon to be Bond last year--James Purefoy--may very well be back in the Bond competition. They say he bowed out of the Bond race when he got the Vendetta role(though I don't remember any such proclamation at all) and now that he is free of the film and his schedule is free--he may be very well in the picture again. Though it makes no sense to me that he would not do Bond because of the Vendetta role and further I see no reason he would have to quit that film to do Bond since it will be well over before Bond starts up. Hopefully it won't be Purefoy--though he has the look unfortunately he's too bland and not charismatic enough.

I'd really like him to be Bond, he was my first choice until I read that he was definately out of the race. But I think he's the best choice looks wise and presence wise (apart from Owen, but he now looks set for bigger things).

Come on Purefoy!!

I don't even think that he has the look. He looks like he'd be more of a Roger Moore Bond, which is something that would NOT fit in with Casino Royale. I agree that he's too bland and I think that he just doesn't have quite the right look for the role. Brocolli and Wilson could surely do better than Purefoy.

I think he looks closer to the conventional image of Bond than, say, Daniel Craig. He did screentest for Goldeneye so Eon must know his potential.

Purefoy doesn't have the acting ability to be believable as Bond. He would be in over his head in a film like Casino Royale.

Brosnan said there was a chap on the same list he was on for Goldeneye last year, and that actor impressed him, that could of been Purefoy who screentested for goldeneye.Posted Image

More Bond looking than Craig, but Butler and Owen are certainly better than either of them.

I saw JP in Vanity Fair (while on a long flight to Beijing) and didn't really see anything that said Bond to me. Are there other films of his that I should look at to see a glimpse of what he would bring to Bond if chosen?

I think that Owen, Jackman and Butler all say Bond to me more then anyone alse at this point.

Purefoy on Bond in HELLO magazine last year:

'Of course, it'd be a great honour, it's such an iconic role, such an interesting part. But you'd also have to think really carefully about doing a job like that, because its full of pitfalls. I think its a very risky thing to do as an actor, especially if you want a long and varied career like I do. In terms of longevity, it would stunt it.'

That last sentence seems to rule him out.

Must admit I find some of the actors to be a bit too sitting-on-the-fence for my liking. Owen has never said he wants to play Bond, Craig hasn't, Scott hasn't, he even said he thought he lacked the charm, McGregor hasn't and now Purefoy seems to be giving the role the cold shoulder. To the best of my knowledge only Hugh Jackman and Ioan Gruffudd have been completely positive about the idea of being cast, although Gruffudd did come out with the somewhat worrying comment:

"I'd treat my Bond women with respect."

Great, that's all we need; a wimpy new-man Bond! :)

Not all the actors are negative about it.

Adrian Paul likes Bond and wants to play him. He has also shown a lot more respect for the legend of Bond than some.

He's respected the past Bonds too, commenting how they all brought something special to the role.

Agreed on Butler although my first choice would be Jackman. Why Butler hasn't been brought in to test or at least being a finalist like McMahon and Craig is beyond me. He seems to have all the elemments EON is looking for but not to big a name (Owen , Jackman) so he could be "controlled". Butler would be a great Bond.

Show me one photo or still of him looking like Bond. The only one I can find that's even close is this:

And to me, even in a tux, that just looks like a good-looking mid-thirties actor. Not Bond. I'm just mystified as to the buzz he's getting.

Me too. A profoundly unexciting choice. The equivalent of getting Cliff Richard to do the title song, I guess.
