I just read on upcomingmovies.com that a new Bond spoof starring Rowen Atkinson and probably called "Johnny English" is supposed to be released around the end of the year. The site said that the character is based on some comercials Atkinson acted in. Has anyone seen these comercials? Are they funny? Also of interest, it said that Purvis and Wade wrote the first draft to the film!

We have a Mr. Bean cartoon here in the UK. Rowan does the voices and everything. It's quite good actually and alot of the skits resemble the TV Show.

Anyone looking for any info on this, check this out:

It takes a little while to load though.

Actually, EDC is right about the Bean movie's success. It must have made a lot, since Mr. Atkinson made enough money from it to buy a McLaren F1, which he also totalled. Figures.

Sky News, reports that John Malkovich is to play the main villain in Johnny English, a crazed supervillain, with plans for world domination.
They also report, Natalie Imbruglia is to play his main love interest. More details as they emerge...

It's not really a Bond spoof. It's an MI6 spoof... the Barclaycard adverts were really funny and had "Johnny English" working for MI6 and kept botching up missions... his Barclaycard always helped him out of sticky situations. The Script was written by P&W and has been touched up by British comedian and long time Atkinson writer Ben Elton who also wrote Blackadder. It's gonna be really funny I think. Oh and Ethan Hunt... Bena the Movie wasn't successfull? Gimme a break! It was the second biggest British movie of all time just after The Full Monty and just above Four Weddings! It made a bomb! It's not going to be a Bond spoof like Austin Powers... think Blackadder if he was a spy I think that's what they're going for...and that sounds damn good for me!!! It's be another British hit fro Working Title pictures and I'll be going to see it.

As Empire Online reports, "Mr. Bean" Rowan Atkinson is to play an English MI6-agent.

[quote]Austin Powers has proved that the James Bond series is a potential goldmine for spoof filmmakers, and now Rowan Atkinson is getting in on the act with Johnny English. In this comedy, from a writing team that includes Ben Elton, the Bean star plays British MI6 agent Johnny English, a role that sounds somewhat reminiscent of his incompetent spy in the Barclaycard ads.

The obligatory love interest will come in the form of Neighbours star turned singer Natalie Imbruglia, maki

Are we forgetting how similar a role Rowan Atkinson has played before?
Remember a certain film called: Never Say Never Again. He starred opposite Sean in that film, i cant remember his character name though.

I seem to remember during the "Final Assignment" debacle that Purvis & Wade had just finished the story for Johnny English.

Can anyone confirm who the writers are?

According the IMDb, Johnny English was written by P&W and William Davies who co-wrote Twins starring big Arnie the Austrian Oak and little Danny DeVito.

In the "Also Known As" section: Johnny English: Rogue Male and Touch Of Weevil

I have to admit, I don't think Johnny English will do too well. After all, Atkinson's 'Bean' film was not a great success, he'll be remembered for his roles as Mr Bean and Blackadder, not a Bond spoof, besides, Austen Powers is out there at the minute, I don't think too many people want to see three/four spy films in one year, the market for his will fall, so too will Bond. I'm not against the film, as such, but other people are making money out of something Fleming created, Bond!

I've seen the animated Mr Bean here in Manitoba. It's okay, but Rowan's acting is better than drawings that rival only South Park!

I'd like to see Johnny English, sounds good. Hopefully not the same jumbled-together mess 'Bean' was. It really was the ultimate disaster...movie.

I suppose this project could work. I am a fan of Rowan Atkinson and his work, and he was pretty funny in NSNA. It'd be intersting to see what he drives in this film, since he owns an Aston Martin (and once got in an accident in one on the racetrack).

Dumb question to some, but in the words of Chris Tarrant, they are only easy if you know the answers.

In the upcoming Rowan Atkinson movie, in which he plays Johnny English, is he playing the same secret agent as he did in the Barclaycard ads in the UK a few years ago?

As I am unsure.

Yes he is. And his side kick Bough is there too. Atkinson is also playing another character and that character is rumoured to be getting a spin off sitcom if he is popular in Johnny English. I can't wait for thsi film... I love Imbruglia... she's gorgeous. And Atkinson is a comedy GOD! He's wonderful. This film we be a treat!

Tony Robinson (a.k.a. Baldrick from Blackadder) could play a 'Q' type role where he could always balls up something with the gadget, but what it does instead helps him. (e.g. a watch with a claw ends up being a laser, instead of the claw helping him to climb up a wall, the laser (unbeknownst to English) cuts the wall and he casually walks through it!) Mad idea but I suppose it would suit Baldricks kind of role of being an utter idiot!

A friend of mine saw them filming a small sequence up by Horseguard's Parade a few weeks back which featured a silver Aston Martin Vanquish making a quick getaway. I wonder where they got that idea from....
And by the way, it definitely was for Johnny English- not Bond.

Atkinson's making a name for himself for making Bond-like films. He was pretty comical in NSNA, I have to admit. I really like Rowan's comedy acts, and I'm anxious to see Johnnny English in action. I'm not surprised Atkinson would drive an Aston in the film, 'cause he owns one himself (and crashed one in a race), if I'm not mistaken. I'm tempted to make him my new avatar.

Yup- I've seen him race quite a few old astons and I did see him stuff a lovely AM zagato. He generally races an old DB2 he owns as I remember.
Have you seen the teaser poster for JE? Quite a good shot of Rowan peering down the barrel of his gun.

I just saw a preview for this film starring rowan atkinson as a bumbling secret agent last night while at Harry Potter. I must say, for a bond spoof, it looks pretty damn funny (if you like Atkinsons humor, which I do, used to watch Mr. Bean religiously). It's not simply "Mr Bean" meets bond either, it looks like it is cleaner humor than what we've seen in the austin powers films. Hopefully it is as funny as it looks!

Sorry Rich, I've relocated your thread here because Johnny English is a spoof, not a spin-off. Hope you don't mind. :)

I am a huge fan of Rowan and I'm really looking forward to this spoof after hearing about it awhile ago in these forums. From what you're indicating Rich, I'm glad that he appears not to be a carbon-copy of that buffoon he played in NSNA.

I was worried that would be the case.

Important note...according to the Internet Movie Database, Johnny English was written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who also brought us The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day.

Put that in your pipe.

I'm actually interested in seeing this...saw a teaser for it before DAD (coincidence?) and it didn't look to bad. Not the typical "Mr. Bean" type humor (although I love Mr. Bean; great show).
