When I was younger, I used to get excited about the new James Bond film coming out, which at the time happened to star Roger Moore. I'd go see it multiple times. In mentioning it to older people, they could care less. Sure the action scenes are more slick, along with other production values. And they make plenty of money, so you can't argue their success. But there's only one James Bond, they'd say. And you just don't understand what it was like in the 60s, when the Cold War was at its peak temperature, and a new James Bond film starring Sean Connery opened. That was the beginning of the so-called event film. It was part of the culture. It was a phenomenon not to be missed.
I never really understood what they meant, until this new crop of "Star Wars" films. Now I understand, in this midst of the craze for this new film, how there is still some central aspect of magic that is missing--at least when you consider the last two films. Whatever that quality is--chemistry among the heroes, an edge of real danger, a storyline that in spite of the fantasy still reaches the audience--these new films sadly lack it.
I'll go see this, but I remember looking forward to the last two and coming away very disappointed. On the other hand, I understand this film has non-stop action, and Lucas thinks that the violence and dark storyline might get it a PG-13 rating...so that's at least encouraging.
p.s. Darth Vader in this film means nothing to me. David Prowse is Darth Vader. Not Christian Hayden wearing foam padding under the suit.

As for James Earl Jones, well he's absolutely the voice of Darth Vader. But I wouldn't disregard what Prowse contributed, OR even the menacing breath SFX that Ben Burtt created. Most definitely a character that depended on the collaboration of several talented people to effectively flesh out.
