LONDON (Reuters) - Actor Pierce Brosnan, usually invincible in the role of secret agent James Bond, has been laid low by a mystery knee injury while filming the latest 007 epic, the movie's production company said Tuesday.
"Pierce Brosnan has always pursued the character with extreme physicality. Friday, Brosnan sustained a knee injury during an action sequence involving water," EON Productions said in a statement.
It said Brosnan would be out of action for two weeks but the film, with the working title "Bond 20," would still hit screens in November as planned.
The company has shrouded the film -- Brosnan's fourth in the role -- in extreme secrecy, although it is known that Madonna (news - web sites) will sing but not appear, and that it opens with an assault on a beach in North Korea (news - web sites) currently being filmed in Cornwall.
In keeping with the cloak and dagger atmosphere surrounding the film, a spokeswoman for EON Productions met inquiries about the nature of Brosnan's injuries with a repeated "no comment."

I wonder what is so mysterious about a knee injury sustained during an action scene?Tyler (19 Feb, 2002 01:14 p.m.):

And does the "action sequence involving water" refer to the waterfall fight after the hovewrcraft chase we have all heard about?

-----------------------------------------------------MGM and producers, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions, issued the following statement concerning the filming of Bond 20 at Pinewood Studios:
SINCE ASSUMING THE ROLE OF JAMES BOND, PIERCE BROSNAN HAS ALWAYS PURSUED THE CHARACTER WITH EXTREME PHYSICALITY. ON FRIDAY, BROSNAN SUSTAINED A KNEE INJURY DURING AN ACTION SEQUENCE INVOLVING WATER. HE IMMEDIATELY MET WITH DOCTORS WHO RECOMMENDED THAT HE HAVE SURGERY TO PREVENT ANY FURTHER DAMAGE.
DUE TO THESE CIRCUMSTANCES, BROSNAN WILL BE RETURNING TO THE SET ON MARCH 4TH. THIS INCIDENT WILL NOT DELAY THE PLANNED RELEASE DATE OF NOVEMBER 2002.

Anyway, I read in one report that Brosnan injured his knee whilst filming in Cornwall. I don't know how accurate this is. I thought he was filming at Pinewood studios and the backlot? jamesbond.com officially say that it happened during a stunt "involving water" so i don't know what to believe.

...And, on a more selfish note, I hope this doesn't become another excuse not to reveal the title next week (if that indeed is the plan).
Amen to that, Brother zencat.

Daily record
BOND film star Pierce Brosnan has undergone emergency surgery after tearing ligaments in his knee during filming.
The actor collapsed in agony while filming aboard a boat in Cornwall for the new 007 movie.
An insider said: "There was a full medical team on set, and they strapped it all up. But he needed a surgeon."

According to the book about the making of TND....Pierce has injured his knee before, around Christmas of 1996, and had surgery on that knee.
All this makes me ask the question: Why do a stunt that you know might reinjure or worsen the knee?
By the way...I'm new. But I guess you figured that out.

Thats what they did with Pedro Armendariz, when he was sick, they fixed the schedule so he could get all his scenes done quickly.

Well it's really hard to portray Bond physically without using your legs and knees. Unless you want to see Pierce standing still giving his lines and cut to a stuntman to do all his running and jumping for him. (think Roger Moore in AVTAK, not a pretty sight)
Brosnan has said he likes to throw himself physically into the role and that he believes an effective portrayal of Bond requires it. If he couldn't do that anymore I doubt he'd want to continue playing Bond.
As Mr. Asterix said, that doesn't mean he has to be Jackie Chan, doing all his own stunts, but some stunts will be done by him and I agree should be done by him. It adds to the film and the believabilty of the actor in the role.
By most accounts it's not a serious injury since he's suppossed to be back to work within 2 weeks. It's an injury he could just as easily have got playing tennis. And it's a far less severe injury than many actors routinely suffer making action films.

I guess, but there is just something about computer graphics in a classic movie that I don't like, CG's can be really bad looking, but on the other hand pretty good. It depends on the effect.
I generally think that it would'nt work too well in a Bond movie. Could you imagine if they went back to the old movies and did this? Especially in AVTAK when the roof comes of the car. It would look too phoney I reckon.
Computers can do a lot in big movies like this, but the still haven't quite got the hang of making it look real - it still looks...well, computer generated. Have you seen in The Mummy Returns, where they grafted the Rock's head onto that scorpion creature? It still looks totally fake and computer generated.
Come to think of it, even the scenes with the rotting mummy in look fake!

Bond20 (20 Feb, 2002 07:49 p.m.):
You're really selective to your amen.
Well, yes, I should have also give a big amen to zencat's first part about Pierce making a full recovery and not being serious.
I split the quote because I was making sure I didn't amen the 'doing his own stunts' part. It's not that I think Pierce should or needs to do his own stunts, but as a serious Jackie Chan fan, I see an advantage with the audience knowing that the star is doing the stunt. So I couldn't 100% agree with zencat on that issue (maybe 85%).
