In the TLD Documentary, it said that actor Sam Neill was considered for the role. Sam is a great actor, and has sort of an aloof presence about him, a good Bond characteristic. Also, him and Dalton have physical similarities (because they're both Welsh?) I would have loved to see him as James Bond, at least once. He would have been perfect for The Living Daylights, and might have added some much needed spice to the film. Licence To Kill seems a little bit to rough for him. After all, Dalton's performance was perfect for the mood of the film. What do you think?

I don't think he would have been suitable for Bond. He can do action filsm very well. (Jurassic Park) However, I would like to see how he would do interacting all of the Bond women and villains.

I admit, I don't think I'd like him, but I've always wanted to see more than just a screentest with him, to get a better idea.

He would have been pretty good as Bond, but I think chosing others above him was a smart move.

He's top notch as the 'ace of spys' though :)

Interestingly Sam Neill's name was bandied arounf earlier for the role of 007. Following the release of NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN producer Kevin McClory tapped Neill as the new James Bond for a series he had in mind.

This wasn't long after Neill had appeared in REILLY: ACE OF SPIES.

I've heard the 'Reilly: Ace of Spies' was really good, but I can't seem to find it anywhere locally. Hopefully, I'll see it soon. Do you have any recommendations about it?

I think Neill would have made a good Bond but I'm glad Cubby Broccoli held out for Dalton.

(because they're both Welsh?)

Actually, Sam Neill is a New Zealander.

He would have been great as Bond, though I don't think he could have been better than Dalton.

I remember watching Jurassic PArk (which was relased in te dark period between LTK and GE) thining "Could this guy be Bond?"

I'm not sure. He's like Liam Neeson in that way, in some areas he would be terrific in others I have questions.

All in all I'm glad they went with Dalton when they did and I'm glad they went with Brosnan when they did.

Hopefully I'll say the same thing about the next fellow.

Watching Moore in other things makes me feel like that 'could he be a Bond' (in some peoples eyes he wasn't a 'real' Bond). Yet if he can be a Bond, anyone with at least 70% of the qualities of Bond can be a Bond.

I think Neill would have been very much along the Dalton lines. I'm not sure how physical an actor he is, but he'd have probably been okay. And it's interesting that some people don't find Dalton's Bond attractive enough, it seems Neill would have even less sex appeal. While that's fine when we talk about the literary Bond, it seems the film Bond has to be somebody along the Connery/Moore/Brosnan ranks in the looks department.

I think Sam Neill is a great actor who would have made a very good James Bond. I could see him as a lighter version of Dalton and I believe anyone who could pull of Sydney Reilly could probably pull off Bond. It would have been nice if he could have made one in the early 90's after Dalton's third Bond film-only in a perfect world, huh?

Overall I think he was a better choice than Timothy Dalton!

Based on the screentest, I would not have liked Sam Neill. I thought his screentest on the DVD was uninspiring and boring. I am not sure he would have made a good James Bond.

No, it's not a good screen test and Sam looks too out of condition to play 007. A better indication of how he might have been like as Bond is his potrayal of Brit secret agent John Rennie in the 1992 TV movie 'Hostage'. There he's a lot leaner and meaner. (And James Fox has a better stab at being an 'M' type spy boss than his brother does in NSNA.)

Yes, that's him CommanderBond. Sam Neill, from the Jurassic Park films. I just think his screentest wasn't enough to tell if he would have been good in the role.

Well actually, he was going for the role of James Bond in The Living Daylights.

It's on the documentary.

So did Pierce Brosnan recently as evidenced by those pictures of him on the beach that appeared in the UK tabloids :)

I think he would have been a good Bond, absolutely. But I'm glad that Dalton got the job as he was the best candidate of the four men considered(Sam Neil, Brosnan, Mel Gibson and Dalton). In '86 Tim was the best choice... :)

I'd like to see Sam Neil play a Bond villian! :)

I'm not sure, I have never seen him elsewhere, I've only seen him in JP, where he was a good guy.

What movies has he played a baddy in?

Another role he was in was Sean Connery's second in command in Hunt for Red October.

I don't think he would have been that great as Bond, and since Dalton is my favorite Bond, I'm glad Neill didn't get the part.

I prefer Dalton , and I don't think that Sam Neill would have done a good job as Bond , because it's not his type...my opinion of course.

Does anyone think that in 1987 sam neill would have made a great Bond after seeing him in jurassic park i thought he was brilliant for the job and i'm suprised he didn't get the part after seeing his brilliant screentest on TLD DVD
