In an ad.:)

From: http://us.imdb.com/WN?20020503#7:

"Sly Gets Bond Role In Ad

Get ready for the shock of the year - Sylvester Stallone is playing James Bond. The Rocky star, who hasn't had a hit film for years, has donned the Bond gear for a new ad campaign for Italian meat company Citterio. Filmed onboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, Stallone dons scuba gear for one ad and tuxedo for another - to stop jewel thieves from escaping with their booty. But, although his character looks every inch 007, the punchline comes as he reveals he's called Bubi - proving you need a good name and a good image to get on in life."

Anyone seen this?

Oh, come on, Sharon Stone could play the femme fatale, and James Woods could play the main villain, and Eric Roberts could play the henchman, John Barry could do the score...oh, wait, they did that movie already.

STALLONE'S BOND: Absolutely!

Q: Now then, your new watch contains a miniature mobile phone. You'll be able to telephone whoever you like whenever you like.

STALLONE'S BOND: I don't need a telephone. I just do this.... (Sticks head out of the window and yells) YO LARGOOOO!!!! IT'S ME, BOND, YOU KNOW? I'M JUST ENTERTAINING DOMINO HERE!!!!!!!!

Q (exasperated): Oh, do pay attention, 007!

STALLONE'S BOND: I'd like to explain something, uh, you know, I ain't punchy, I got what'd you'd call like, I don't know, a relaxed brain, but I ain't punchy, you know, that's just the way I talk.

M: Double-O status rescinded.

STALLONE'S BOND: Along with my freedom?

M: For as long as I deem necessary, yes. You're no good to anyone any more.

STALLONE'S BOND: I don't need this no more. I don't want this no more.

I remember reading back in the 1980s that they were planning to make a new Rambo film every two years with Stallone and create a franchise in direct competition with the Bond films. There could have been an excellent Rambo series, but it all went tits-up with the woeful RAMBO III.:)

Hot Shots Part Deux was so much better than Dumbo 3. It was meant to be funny, at least.

RAMBO III was supposedly the most expensive film of all time when it was released, but heaven knows where the money went. I bought the RAMBOs on DVD recently and was staggered by how cheap and tacky III looked, with hilariously obvious painted backgrounds everywhere.

Also, there's no story to speak of, and an uninteresting opponent for Rambo (compare the Russian officer in III to Brian Dennehy's sheriff in the excellent FIRST BLOOD). Sly is on autopilot (his performance in FIRST BLOOD is one of his best ever, and he's much better in RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II than most people would give him credit for being).

With III, they had an opportunity to take the series in a new and exciting direction. Instead, they opted for a dull rehash of RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II (Rambo goes into Commie-controlled territory and teams up with local freedom fighters to rescue Americans *yawn*). And all that sentimental nonsense with the young Afghan boy who's clearly in love with Rambo is just plain embarrassing.

The only part of RAMBO III I like is the stick-fighting in Bangkok at the beginning.

Oh, yeah? Well, my stick is bigger than your stick! Oh, that kind of stick fighting...I get it.

Strangely enough one of the ideas seriously kicked around in the early 1990s was making James Bonds 007 character a female and tipped to play the part was Sharon Stone...

It's a very interesting idea. It looks as though Eon may be making a series of films about a female secret agent, Jinx. Of course, Jinx (the star of last year's DIE ANOTHER DAY) works for the American NSA and is not a Double-O, but I think there's great potential there.

I think EON has been trying to make a female secret agent movie for the last decade. After the Sharon Stone project turned into GOLDENEYE and Brosnan became Bond, they probably seriously wanted to do a Wai Lin movie but then Michelle Yeoh started dissing the Bond series so they dropped that idea. Then there is Jinx, a character that Halle Berry has publicly stated she is interested in reprising, so EON is now working on that project.

Did she? I never knew that. I really, really wanted to see a Wai Lin film and I wish they'd made one. It would have been great if they'd done a Wai Lin solo adventure instead of THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH. I'd be interested in seeing what a Jinx film turned out like, but I'd have much preferred a Wai Lin spinoff.

I think that Wai Lin was a much more interesting and COMPETANT character than Jinx. She definately would have made a much better spin-off character.

I put this on the CBn front page:

[box]Sylvester Stallone Is Chosen To Play James Bond
(Sort of)

The IMDb Movie/TV News reports that Rocky star Sylvester Stallone has been chosen to play the role of James Bond.

Well, for an advertising campaign anyway.

Stallone will star in a series of commercials for an Italian meat company named Citterio playing a tuxedo wearing superspy who has short adventures like those featured in the James Bond films.

In the end, it will be revealed that the spy is not named James Bond, but rather he is named Bubi, proving the meat company

It’s alright, Loomis. I guess the fact that your thread title was past tense should have been my first clue.

Well, I'm a huge fan of both Stallone and (obviously) Bond, but with the best will in the world I can't picture Sly as anything other than a quite appalling choice to play 007 - and I'm sure Stallone himself would agree with that.
