Damn that was allot of typing.. :)

~I'd figure that I'd write each one seperate.. so Everyone.. can "Quote Reply" it allot easier :)

ok I got all that Info from the Book: The Complete James Bond Movie Encyclopedia

It will take me awhile to really break down.. all the different movies Roger was up against.. I'll have to think up my thoughts.. BUT for Cubby to trust and believe in Roger soooo MUCH to put him the middle of the summer.. with EVERY Major Movie Star of the Time.. & against Sequels.. Ending of franchises (return of the jedi)..

...and for Roger to still have a HUGE Audience.. thats amazing !!!!!!!!!

I'll have to think of where Cubby put a 007 movie up against the hottest competition:cool:

Didn't MR also play against "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in some parts of the world?

But .. he said tomorrow moring he will look for it ..to be 100% sure

What people today will not realize is a lot of those releases (that some of the younger generation will not recognize the titles of) were the blockbusters of their day.

I mean the fever pitched excitement that was generated by "Return of the Jedi" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is not matched by anything that comes out these days....the publics anticipation was just intense.

I'm not sure about the USA, but I think in some parts of the world they were in competition with each other.

Oh I totally agree.. I remember most of these 1980's movies..

for one.. Rambo Part 2.. was HUGE! It was the first movie to make $15 Million in one day or that weekend (I'll have to look it up).. and that was a TON of money!! I remember everyone was talking about Rambo!

Just look over the list.. Cubby wasn't affraid of

George Lucas!!
Sly Stallone!!
Steven Spielberg!!
Eddie Murphy!!

Just to name a few

The 1980s was the decade of the true blockbuster. I remember reading an editorial in "Starburst" (circa. 1981) that movies were just getting bigger and bigger with more mass appeal. It all seemed inspired by the mammoth success of movies such as "Superman", "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Star Wars".....
They sure don't make movies like they used too...thats a shame.

MR wouldn't have competed with Star Trek TMP as the latter wasn't released until the weekend before Xmas. MR may have been floating around in the second-run theaters or may have been competing against it in other parts of the world, but they didn't really compete head-to-head.

I remember when AVTAK was ready to be released, everybody at my school was more geared up for Rambo, and didn't give AVTAK a second thought. But in the long run, look who came out on top.

Yes no one at my school was interested in AVTAK....they were all thinking Rambo (the tv and newspapers were full of Rambo related stuff).

yeah same here.. everyone was talking about Rambo 2!! I mean that was as huge as you got back then.. it had a huge buzz! But if you look now at both movies.. avtak & Rambo 2.. it is NO contest!! Rambo 2 has a blockbuster feel..like they knew it was going to be big.. BUT the movie is pretty average at best.

I think AVTAK has stood the test of time better than Rambo 2, especially considering the fact that it has gone through a revisionist period (as witnessed by the examination on 007 Forever) and AVTAK is now considered one of the better James Bond movies.

I agree.. when I first saw a few of the 007 films .. I hated them, but some have aged well! ..and now I love them :)

AVTAK
TLD
LTK

I hated all 3 with a passion!! But I have to say they have aged soo sooo soo well.. that now I love them! Plus I think seeing what Cubby's Kids have done with the series & their movies.. make any bond made with the life long crew Cubby put together from 1962-1989.. I am starting to like all of them..

Pre Cubby's Kids.

The revisionist take on the Rambo thing kind of speaks for the longevity of the Bond series. Rambo was the new hero then and people flocked to see that, but by the third chapter of that series, it was history.

Same way with the Lethal Weapons. Part 2 did whip LTK at the box office because it was still fairly new at the time and people were growing tired of a new Bond every three years. But the third chapter of that series saw it

I'm not sure about a fourth Die Hard but a new Indy Jones movie would kick serious butt of any kind of competition.

Yeah I see Indy 4.. being pretty average.

All I see is George Lucas pushing some dumb CGI Dragon or something that Indy has to battle at the end..

The problem is ILM is over! What happened to them, their work is pretty average?? They used to be at teh top of the pack! NOW they are probably ranked 3rd on everyone's FX Company list.

That was one thing I liked about the Bond films that they weren't over FX run!! Yes a few here or there.. but mostly Stunts!

Well for sure the Sean - Tim era:cool:

In this current era, I think an Indy Jones film would do fine, especially on an opening weekend, but not do nearly the gargantuan box office the first three did. It would hold its own, but get lost in the shuffle as other big new films opened.

I think Ford is getting on in years and his box office appeal has certainly fallen in the past several years. His latest film has already disappeared from a lot of theaters around where I live. And the younger generation who now supposedly make up the biggest box office contingent probably wouldn't appreciate an older action hero and may be unfamiliar with Indy to begin with. That could change when the films are released on DVD in the fall.

Yes that may be true but you forget that the generation that grew up with Indiana Jones as kids are now adults and have kids of their own. That means they are likely to take their kids to see a new Indiana Jones movie partly because they like the series themselves but also because they remember having good fun going to see the earlier movies when they were their childrens age.

Does anyone know what the Battle For POTA's opening weekend gross was compared to LALD?

That may be hard to find, DanMan. Remember this was 30 years ago (we're approaching the LALD anniversary, people) and the emphasis on the weekend gross didn't mean then what it does now. In a lot of cases, films had releases that were staggered, opening first in the big cities and then going wider and not mass released in 5,000 theaters like today.
And, if I remember correctly, new films were sometimes released on Wednesdays and I don't know if that affected what was considered a weekend gross back then.

Battle was the final chapter in a fading series and did okay as far as I know, but didn't do extreme blockbuster numbers.
