I can understand why Mortner got invited into the air balloon plan, but why Scarpine and not Mayday? Scarpine is just a bore. Zorin fancied Mayday. Why would he not include her in the getaway?

Maybe Scarpine was Zorin's secret gay lover. Mayday was just his beard. He felt it was time to come out of the closet.

Just a thought. :)

Forgive the expression, but there's a lot of very queeny stuff in that movie. Aside from Stacey, everyone sexuality seems to be questionable. Even Bond and Tibbit

I think it's just because Zorin was a creep....He shot all his men in the tunnels. Perhaps May Day was also a liability?

I watched AVTAK 2 days ago. It's a pretty dull film after the Pretitle, which rocks.Roger couldn't do anything physical with mr stand in.Yep, AVTAK ranks very low for me.My second least favorite but it has it's moments. :)

Yeah but its a Bond movie so Bond had to kick his ***...
To have May Day do it would be like having Jinx beat up Miranda in DAD --- oh wait a minute, that did happen...
Was "Die Another Day" the new James Bond movie, or the new Halle Berry movie - the debate goes on in my office.

I liked that May Day became a somewhat allie to Bond at the end. Zorin really only cared for himself. Bond even says at one point that he is a psychopath. Zorin was definitely one of the more crazier and unpredictable villains in the 007 series.

He says it twice. Once to Chuck Lee and the second time to Stacy.

Scarpine was probably a close personal friend of Zorins's (hard to tell since Scarpine was a hugely underwritten character). And we all know that Mortimer was like a father to Zorin. Mayday was neither of these, so Zorin decided to betray her too, thats my thoughts on the matter at least.

he was funny to watch mortimer and scarpine tussle for the dynamite, mortimer wanted to throw it at james bond, mortimer saying "no no let me" and then the explosion. its hard to believe a smart man at the end would aurgue over who was going to throw the dynamite....that has always struck me odd

when I was a kid and the first time I saw AVTAK... I was affraid May day was going to double cross Roger.. because she sorta freaked me out kinda like Darth Vader did when he became a "good guy" .. I thought he also was going to double cross Luke :)

When I was a kid I was freaked out by 3 people.. NOT even slasher killers.. I love Friday the 13th, Halloween,ect..

But what freaked me out was:
1) Mr T (in rocky 3) he just talked so much honest shyt!!!
2) Darth Vader
3) May day. just her whole trying to bite Zorin..she was very harsh

the more i think on this, i just have to laugh....mortimer "no no let me"...just like a child...not thinking to himself in a sensible manner that if we dont get rid of this dynamite we are going to die....all i can think is that he was insane to

Tanya Roberts is one of the most beautiful of all Bond girls. Who cares if her acting left a lot to be desired when she has knock-out looks like that!

Regarding Mortner and Scarpine tussling over the dynamite....My impression is that now that Zorin is dead, Mortner wants to die. (His creation/plan has failed, and he's accepted the inevitable) Scarpine, however, wants to escape, and that's why *he* tries to discard the dynamite. But he fails with Mortner's interference, hence their death.

As to the main question of why Zorin double crosses May Day....Besides the obvious He. Is. Mad., it's clear that May Day can be a burden to him at times. She is as strong willed as he is, and he likes "More! More power!" For someone who is supposedly in love with MD, he has no problem telling her to sleep with Bond in the chateau. It's not even done calculatedly, but his expression suggests "why not". May Day seems reluctant to sleep with Bond, but does it on his orders.

Finally, in the mine when the Texan protest about the miners and says "what about May Day, and my men", Zorin replies "a convenient coincidence". I think if May Day were there, (and not chasing Bond and Stacey), she would have lived and escaped with Zorin. Although there were seeds of discontent in their affair, Zorin *would not have betrayed her!!*.

Most likely, it's a plot hole, not motivated the characters. The scriptwriters wanted May Day to help Bond at the end. It's established Bond can't get the detonater out alone. Stacey can't help with this, but May Day--on Bond's side--has the super human strength (genetic engineering) to do it. But unless Zorin betrayed her, she wouldn't do that. Her loyalty to Zorin is unquestionable, and she is not a bumbler like some henchmen in other films, who would be shot by the main villian for their failures. (eg. Thunderball, YOLT) Therefore, the writers made an artificial betrayal so the above events could happen.

On a side topic, why does everyone say Grace Jones is ugly? She is exotic and beautiful, and although her character (and personality) are larger than life, I think the comments deriding her are off base.

I agree with you on this, she is exotic and beautiful....I could give you the reason I believe a lot of CBNers do not like Grace Jones but I would be in hot water again if I brought the topic up.

I think it's much the same reason a lot of CNMers do not like Rosie Carver, which is a shame because Rosie Carver was such a gorgeous and sexy character.
