No, John McTiernan's not going to direct MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III (although that would be great news, IMO). These are two separate items from AICN that I thought might be of interest to some CBners.
The first is for the likes of B5Erik2, who'd love McTiernan to direct a Bond movie. I'd also love him to do a Bond, but unfortunately I don't think he ever will. Anyway, here's a glowing early review of his new film BASIC, which suggests that he may be back on form after the huge disappointment of ROLLERBALL (I'm not quite sure just how spoiler-filled it is, since I've only scanned it, so proceed with caution):

I did, it's pretty cool, actually I like both directors and M:I 3 from either one of them is worth it...

Two very cool news items, IMO. As a McTiernan fan, I'm really looking forward to BASIC (although I have my reservations about the title - I guess it must mean something within the context of the film, but it seems pretty weak and blah to me, and for some reason it immediately gets me thinking of BASIC INSTINCT). I'm not sure when it will be released in the UK - probably summer at the earliest. Talking of BASIC INSTINCT, I thought ROLLERBALL in some ways seemed more Paul Verhoeven than McTiernan: a sci-fi tinged story of capitalist exploitation, full of bonecrunching violence and spiced up with T&A. ROLLERBALL should have been a perfect project for McTiernan (the McTiernan of PREDATOR and DIE HARD, anyway, not the McTiernan of THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR), and it should have worked, but as things turned out it just wasn't any fun. IMO, at least.
As for Joe Carnahan doing M:I-3, I've heard good things about this director. I can't wait to catch up with NARC.
