I am sure we are all hoping that Christoph Waltz returns to menace Bond some more, but if for whatever reason he doesn't, who would you like to see facing off against Bond?

I have some suggestions

- Jason Mamoa (Aquaman, Justice League)
- Benedict Cumberpatch (Sherlock, Star Trek into Darkness)
- Idris Elba (Thor, Star Trek Beyond)
- Tom Hardy (Legend, Dark Knight Rises)
- Jared Leto (Suicide Squad, Lord of War)
- Vincent Cassel (Jason Bourne, Oceans 12)
- Clive Owen (The International, Croupier)

And then how about some acting heavyweights, who would give both Bond and Craig a run for their money

- Mel Gibson
- Robert De Niro
- Johnny Depp
- Russell Crowe

What do you all think?

I would prefer unknown or lesser known actors, people with no baggage so to speak, like the early Bond villains who were all the more menacing because one did not identify them from other roles so quickly.

I like that idea, but I also would like to see someone who could act Bond off stage, I think the better the actor the more menacing they would come across, I think that personally anyway

I agree - an acting heavyweight would be splendid.  But there are tons of "unknown" actors who could do that and get their big break in a Bond film.

Option one: They take no risks at all. The villain is a heavily accented jerk with connections to recent evil stuff we've all heard about. "He's Catalan, we think. Got his start selling bushmeat in Crimea. When the Russians marched in, he made a fortune." He's played by somebody with stubble who won a Cesar Award.

Option two: They break with recent tradition and hire a British/Commonwealth/American actor. We haven't had an Anglophone villain in years, and we've never had a really nasty and formidable American villain. A mercenary, a renegade general, a boorish real estate tycoon, whatever. Call him Hildebrand and show him golfing in Florida and scheming with Russian sub-villains. He beats up women, wears a monogrammed windbreaker, and goes to dog fights.

Option three: They get ambitious and hire some prominent Chinese or Bollywood actor to play the villain. Probably more of a pain than they're willing to suffer, but eventually Bond has to return to India, and when he does, it will be weird if the producers don't involve major Indian talent.

Option four: They create a proper female villain who gets to run the show and not share the stage with another baddie. She's played by a veteran actress, her scheme is ingenious and greedy rather than a hysterical revenge plot, and she never doubles as a love interest.

Option five: Another damn super hacker. This time his scheme involves the dark web, "onion routers", the world's most sophisticated baccarat-playing computer, a driverless Aston Martin, and a fleet of drones reprogrammed to bomb major cities.

All good options in my opinion..
I always thought if they returned to India then Aishwarya Rai is long overdue the girl role, and Anil Kapoor is a good shout for the villain role

I want a really weird character played by Michael Fassbender. Cold, calculated. A mastermind... A classic Bond villain.

"star" with DC and "unknown" with Bond 7.

I've always thought that Viggo Mortensen would be a great Red Grant to Craig's Bond.

Heh. I think you've got something here. As a bonus, can Bond defeat him, humiliate him and remove him  in real life?

1. I always felt casting Christoph Waltz was an attempt at risk free villain casting. After that I think they definitely need to mix it up.

2. In the past I've felt they should avoid American villains but maybe now is the time given the current climate. One name I've been circling for such a role is Denis O'Hare, a hugely underrated star of stage and screen. He came to my attention with his performance as a vampire king in True Blood where he demonstrated the ability to play a powerful and arrogant villain as well as being able flip from dangerous to hilarious when needed.

3. Certainly a lot of potential here as both markets contain a lot of talent that's largely unknown to Western audiences. China could be a bit more of a problem as the Chinese Film Board doesn't like China being shown in a negative light and that may preclude a Chinese actor as the main villain.

4. Isabelle Huppert perhaps? She's a well respected actress with a distinguished career spanning decades. She recently got rave reviews and an Oscar nomination for her particularly nasty turn in Elle but hasn't been part of any mainstream blockbusters or big franchises.

But I agree with what you said about her scheme and motivation. I don't want to see a man used as her motivation, a desire for power and wealth is reason enough for what she's doing.

5. Not to keen on more hackers but drone warfare has potential. I've been playing with and idea that's sort of an update of Moonraker (novel rather than film) with a drone fleet instead of a nuclear missile. It's got a topical edge but being about the manufacture and the people design and build the drones would make it different to the way they've been used before.

Huppert would be great, and I wouldn't be surprised if she's been on Eon's radar for a while.

Personally I'd love to see an updated plot involving characters based on the Spang brothers from the book version of DAF.  I'm not sure how you'd update their plot, but I like the idea of Bond going up against brothers rather than a bad and his assorted henchmen.

With Craig returning, I'd like to see them finish the Blofeld story arc.  Include Monica Bellucci.

I'm intrigued by the Spang Brothers idea.

At first, I liked the driverless Aston Martin, but then I remembered Knight Rider.

If Craig returns it would be weird to have the whole Blofeld/Spectre storyline wrapped up in SPECTRE.

After straining themselves to connect the previous four films it would be foolish to add a final film having nothing to do with the rest.

But if Waltz returns I sincerely hope they will give him lots to do AND add Irma Bunt or another major second villain to achieve the kind of menace a lone Waltz-Blofeld would not be able to.

If Waltz returns it would definitely want to see the addition of Irma Bunt. We haven't had a female villain since TWINE and would be good to see Craig struggle against one for a while. Especially if Irma Bunt is cast well and has all the tools to perform... SCRIPT!

Me too. I get the impression Waltz wants another shot at the character too. I say let him off the chain ala Bardem in Skyfall.

They considered Meryl Streep and Chiwetel Ejiofor for Blofeld. Wonder if either of those are still an option or consideration.

I still hope for Ulrich Matthes. He was close to land the villain role in CASINO ROYALE. He'd still be a most impressive adversary. And he even has quite some charm.

I'd still like to see Forest Whitaker as a Bond villain one day. He's good at playing scary dudes.
