David Suchet was heavily rumoured to be getting the part of Le Chiffre when Casino Royale was announced. Does anyone know how close David Suchet actually came to getting the part?

Back in the day I didn't pay enough attention to the casting process. The only thing I can say with any certainty is that Ullrich Matthes was very close to landing the part; he dropped out because of a theatre commitment. I haven't heard of Suchet in relation to the Le Chiffre part. But that's not to say it didn't happen; perfectly possible he too was in the running.

Wow, Matthes would have been very interesting.  He still could be a very effective villain.

And, yes, he would have been a fantastic Blofeld, too.

Matthes would have been a most terrifying villain; he surely would have given even the SPECTRE version of Blofeld an edge.
