[Eskyfall]

Since 1962, has James Bond ever had a dead time like this? No movie, no game, no book. Even during the longest down periods (1989-1995, 2002-2006, 2008-2012) we still had James Bond in some other form, in lieu of a film. We've heard nary a peep about anything since Spectre release. When will the next film release? Will there ever be another Bond game or will 007 Legends be the Bond games' Jaws: The Revenge? Will we ever get another Bond book?

I was very skeptical of the recent Bond comic run, purely judging from the outside. So, I naturally inquired about them on here and per most suggestions, went out a picked up a few copies to give them a try.

 

Long story short, I hunted down, bought, and now have each issue! They're quick, violent, and compelling reads... Plus, the art is great!

I was very skeptical of the recent Bond comic run, purely judging from the outside. So, I naturally inquired about them on here and per most suggestions, went out a picked up a few copies to give them a try.

 

Long story short, I hunted down, bought, and now have each issue! They're quick, violent, and compelling reads... Plus, the art is great!

Hmm, I guess I'll have to give the comics a try. Also, I did not know that Horowitz was making a second novel. That's certainly encouraging. Though I still haven't read Trigger Mortis. I should do that at some point.

I really liked Trigger Mortis. One of the better Bond novels, in my opinion (although I also enjoyed Faulks' and Deaver's efforts more than most fans did).

 

Picked up VARGR at a comic book shop. Not only do Bond fans have positive things to say about it, the guy working at the comic book store also raved about it. I will definitely get to it as soon as I find some free time.

I'm a big advocate for the comics. They're my favourite Bond product to come out in years. And the best thing is they're ongoing. If Bond fans gave them a go, I'm sure they'd be pleasantly surprised.

Apparently the Bond comics aren't selling that well with dwindling readership, which is a real shame. Hopefully things turn around, but in the meantime, enjoy them while you can.

Regarding the Lazenby documentary: he was going to do his memoir in 2012, but it never happened. Is this something he's done instead, do you think?

Memoirs are tricky pieces. 90 per cent (or more) are written by ghost writers and they have a certain tariff up front. No treasures, mind you. But the work and the discretion come with a price. Add to this Lazenby isn't particularly famous outside fandom and many of his anecdotes are already known in one form or another... I can see how this book may not have been the best way to exploit his memoirs, especially if it didn't contain any really juicy details not known previously. Could well be his agent or publisher decided to turn it into the basis for this.

There could be a glimmer of hope in that the sales figures used for the analysis came from Dynamite's distributor in the US. It does not include any digital or foreign sales.

I really liked Trigger Mortis. One of the better Bond novels, in my opinion (although I also enjoyed Faulks' and Deaver's efforts more than most fans did).

I liked Faulks's and Deaver's books as well. Devil May Care felt like it could have been written by Fleming and had a great villain. Though I disliked the 004 twist. Carte Blanche was good, but it never felt like a Bond novel, rather more like failed movie script turned into a book. I'm actually just starting Solo, which I've also yet to read. I'll do Trigger Mortis after, so that will satiate my Bond appetite for like 2 weeks lol.

Outside of the Fleming bibliography, which Bond novels are the most enjoyable?

I´m actually starting to read some of the continuation novels I had not picked up yet.  Currently: Gardner´s SCORPIUS.  Starts off promisingly - although the following Exorcist-like scene has worried me...

 

Scorpius may have been my favorite Gardner entry! Very unique (unlike his later few, which all seemed to be the same book written multiple times) and well written and developed (as far as I can remember-- I read it about a decade ago). 

 

I would love for many aspects of this novel to wind up in a future Bond film, particularly as this type of villain would be new territory for the series. 

 

Please let us know your thoughts once you've finished it.

Outside of the Fleming novels, I rate the Charlie Higson Young Bond series, Colonel Sun, The Authorised Biography of 007 and Trigger Mortis. All well worth a read in my opinion.

Forgot there was a Gardner novel every year from 1989 to 1995, plus a 30th anniversary CD, to get through that six year gap.  Still, that felt longer, being unprecedented as it was.  Also, no commanderbond.net back then!
