Hello friends -

After years of admiring and engaging in (what seems like) every facet of British culture from far away in Canadaland, I'm finally making the trek across the pond this September to spend a week in London. I've got an overwhelming bucket list of things planned to see and do, which includes plenty of Bond-related stops.

I wanted to check in with some of my longtime peers (and London locals) here to see if there's any advice or help you could offer to make the trip as memorable as possible. Specifically, I'm looking for any insights on -

  • The best pubs and restaurants in London - the hidden gems, not necessarily the ones you'd find on a Tripadvisor list
  • I've left one night open for a pricey, "treat yourself" hotel stay - what are your thoughts on some of the usual best-place-in-London suspects?
  • Whether or not the Bond "tours" you can find online are worth it, vs. just putting together my own itinerary to hit the iconic spots
  • Anything else you can think of that you'd want someone to know before they visit London for the first time, but might not be easily found with online research

I'm staying fairly centrally for most of the week, right near Waterloo station. Not overly concerned about the trek required to get to certain places, if they're worth it.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much - can't wait!

I haven't lived there for 13 years and I know you'll get lots of good suggestions about things to do.

I just thought I'd mention that alot of the traditional sights (Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, The Cenotaph, Horse Guards, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and The London Eye)  can all be done in one day. You can also see the "James Bond Door", just off Westminster Bridge from DAD, on this walk.

I love London. I've been twice and would go again. If you like sports, definitely head out to Wimbledon. Go to the top of The Shard. Travel to Abbey Road. Visit the Tower of London, and everything Dave listed above. London's tube network is really easy to use and I highly recommend it.

Thanks Dave - I'd already heard as much, and actively planned to do exactly this. In fact I'm staying centrally to all of them, which helps. :)

If you go by Canada Gate outside Buckingham Palace, you'll be at the spot where Gustave Graves lands by parachute to become a knight..  Stop in at the College of Arms in the City.  We asked if Sir Hillary was in, and the lovely lady at reception favored me with her "I've never heard that one before" look!

Where can I get the best beef wellington in the city? Years of marketing effort have me believing it's one of Gordon Ramsay's restaurants.

If you get the chance you want to try and eat at Rules (Covent Garden) they do an excellent beef wellington.  Plus, this is where M is having "supper" when Q and Moneypenny interrupt him in SPECTRE.

As a Londoner (well nearly!) I really hope you enjoy your stay! :)

I hope you have a safe journey, and you enjoy your time in our fair capital city of London! You'll certainly find PLENTY to do. :)

And I echo all of the above; some brilliant places to see, and lots of Bond related locations too.

Oh, certainly. Rules is high on my list. :)

Speaking of which, I should probably be making that reservation now...

Anyone have any experience with these Bond tours? Should I save my $$ and just build my own, based on my (overwhelming) knowledge of Bond history? ;)

These tours seem to be asking for an awful lot of money, considering you could probably take yourself around there for free! If it was me, I'd save my ££s and book the events such as Bond in Motion and then find your way around London yourself.
