Box Office Mojo says that Spectre has made $153,702,879; while Skyfall totaled $ 221,144,122. Any thoughts as to why the gap is so large between the two? It's almost $70 mill in difference.

  1. No free Olympic promotion
  2. No 50th Anniversary promotion
  3. Better word of mouth
  4. Poor reviews in the US (doesn't seem to be the case elsewhere, though)

SPECTRE was never going to equal Skyfall's success at the box office.  As I've said before, though, this film will end up making a ton of money and, when it does, it shouldn't be viewed as a financial disappointment.

Also - thanksgiving fell within the first 17 days for SKYFALL. Big movie long weekend. It's a week later for SPECTRE because of how the calendar fell.

That's bad for SPECTRE because it will have more recent competition on the thanksgiving weekend. But expect it to make up some ground relative to SKYFALL regardless.

That's a good point Midshipman. It should get a good bump this weekend. The Hunger Games junk part 2 or whatever, isn't a pure juggernaut here in the states. I watched the last HG because a friend wanted me to go watch it with him. Never again! One of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life.  Wonder why my Quote function won't work?

Word of mouth has hurt it some here in the states. I feel that the critics may have cost it 10-15$ million (at least). Critics really get on my nerves sometimes.

I saw where SP dropped by 70% in the second frame in China...ouch   ,but it has already made more there than Skyfall's final total there.

I don´t think that the Olympics and the 50th anniversary actually made any difference for SKYFALL.  The film was simply better, more interesting and got the kind of word-of-mouth that SPECTRE did not.

Also, times are changing rapidly - and the US box office is in severe decline this year.  Americans just don´t seem to go to the movies as much as before.   If SKYFALL had been released this year it would not have made as much money either.

One should not forget: SPECTRE does spectacularly well in the rest of the world, in many countries outperforming SKYFALL.

It will be very interesting to see how THE FORCE AWAKENS will do in the US.  My bet: the international grosses will be through the roof.

The Force Awakens is going to do very well in the US. You'd be hard pressed to find too many people who aren't talking about that film around here.

I do think that the Olympics and 50th Anniversary helped because it allowed them to drum up some level of Bondmania before Skyfall arrived in theaters. It felt like something of an event film, thanks in large part to the endless promotion during 2012 for it, and that was only solidified by the early rave reviews. People in the US went to see Skyfall, even those who couldn't care less about Bond, because it was that kind of an event.

Well said. Your post just about covers everything.

Doesn't look like Spectre is going to make the $200 million mark in the U.S. I have to say, I'm a little disappointed, but not surprised. I blame a lot of it on the critics here in the states, they really slammed it. According to Rotten Tomatoes, only 65 percent of the audience liked it. (So word of mouth didn't help). It's hard to believe that after all that hard work, quality people behind it, and time, that Spectre was "according to the masses," subpar. I still think the tone and style of the movie should be more like Casino Royale; instead of the "Moore" style, which obviously didn't work today (or back in the day).

I'd say 65% isn't subpar when most reviewers like it. Unless we are calling Skyfall par. Which may be the case.

the Adele song gave skyfall a big push…I prefer Spectre to Skyfall but the reviews have hurt it.

@ Hockey (sorry my quote feature doesn't work). I loved the movie (despite the flaws), so don't get me wrong. I watched it 5 times. That's a better way to put it: "in relation to Skyfall." Most of the blockbusters here in the states 2015, except Jurassic World (which was still in the 70s), outscored Spectre on reviews and it scored a 79 on viewer approval vs. Spectre's 65 (for the record, I thought Jurassic World stunk). A more disturbing # could be Rogue Nation; which scored a 93 on reviews, and 89 percent liked it (beating Spectre by 24 points here). I think Rogue Nation made 195 mill here in the states, and Spectre will probably top that, but I don't know (SP is down to 1200 or so theatres now). I haven't seen any of the MI movies, not a big fan of Cruise. I guess what I'm trying to say is simply this: I wish Spectre had done better. It also goes to show that 3 years doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get a better movie. Also thought that this Bond would make more $ (based on Skyfall's success--the base had grown). Oh well.
