https://twitter.com/...931731199672320SPECTRE: old-school adventure & flamboyance, done with discretion & steel. Not a classic but strong
https://twitter.com/...932487050960897#Spectre great fun, very exciting, sexily pro-Snowden
https://twitter.com/...933298850131969Spectre: the elegant ghost of vintage Bonds gone before. Cruel, dark & handsome, GSOH. Liked this a lot, surpassed expectations.
https://twitter.com/marziepanicInitial #Spectre thoughts then: Everything you expect a Bond film to do well, it does. Great action set-pieces, nice touches of humour...... but there is so much wrong with it. Terrible plot contrivances, a saggy middle, unearned relationships. The main problem with Spectre is that it tries too hard to be interesting by making Bond himself interesting. But the more you define him...... the more you paint him into a corner. A better film here would be to make the PLOT interesting and just let Bond be Bond throughout it.

Thrilled by SPECTRE. Perfect hybrid of vintage Bond panache and Craig era grit. Almost the true 50th anniversary film three years late...

I was quite disappointed to see what I imagine is a pretty big spoiler in the *first line* of that review - journalists really have no sense of discretion at all, do they?

Yes, I wondered about that, too. Maybe Waltz doesn't make much of an impression?

SKYFALL advance reviews had an absolute ban on mentioning M's fate. Some things will be telling by their absence.

I am heartened by the reviews. I think this will truly be Craig's Thunderball to Skyfall's Goldfinger.

I´m only skimming the reviews since I don´t want to read too much about the plot - but judging from the two trades "Variety" and "The Hollywood Reporter" there is a tendency to review SPECTRE more in contrast to SKYFALL than as a film by itself.
Of course, that was to be expected. Journalists just love to build something up and than to tear it down. Also, these two writers clearly are no fans of the franchise and look down on it.
So, I´m not surprised if SPECTRE won´t enjoy the rave reviews of SKYFALL - and it won´t mean that the film is not as good or even better. It´s just a symptom of how the press works.

I'm avoiding the reviews, but am curious, do they mention anything about the gun barrel being at the start?

Their same score as Skyfall.
I'm pleased with the reviews. It's going to be a top tier entry, I think.

Ok, now I'm getting super-hyped. I live in the U.S. so we won't get to see the film for another 2 weeks. But as long as the reviews do not say that it is a DAD or QOS, then I'm a happy fellow. Cheers to all of you that get to see it before me. I hope you enjoy it. Now if I can just survive 2 long, grueling weeks without spoilers.

I'm hyped to the point I can barely sleep!
The delayed release schedule is annoying, and it's going to be a difficult wait. But I guess once the wait is over, it's over. I'll have the soundtrack and the Blood, Sweat and Bond book to tide me over in the meantime.

Yeah I hear ya. Even with the Star Wars Final Trailer that just came out, I'm more hyped for Spectre right now. I haven't listened to the soundtrack yet just because, once again, I don't want to spoil anything for myself. 2 1/2 bloody weeks. ARGG!!!!
In the meantime I'll just keep having my Bond movie countdown. I'm on Casino Royale now. I "conveniently" skipped DAD. Oops. lol.

Is it me or are the reviews from American publications generally more negative?
It´s not you.
Posted 22 October 2015 - 03:52 PM
3/5 from the NME.
How much you enjoy this may depend on how you feel about Bond in general. If you miss the old days, with the world in elaborate peril and everything done with a big wink, this is a solid example of that. If you preferred the lower stakes but tighter storytelling of the new era, Spectre may feel like your dad’s Bond.

The Financial Times - 2/5
One of the few genuinely negative reviews, as of yet.
