Daniel Craig will return to the New York stage next year in Shakespeare's 'Othello'. He will play Iago opposite David Oyelowo's Othello.

Will Shakespeare buffs raise a stink?  I've seen Ian Holm and Antony Sher play this role, but whoever heard of a blonde Iago?

Actually, this should be a wonderful production.  Worth a trip to New York for.

It's been said about Daniel Craig that one reason his Bond works is one can as easily imagine him playing a villain as a hero. And now he's going to play one of my favourites from Shakespeare (In my penultimate year at school, studying A Level English Lit. the class had a read through of Othello and I got to play Iago - can't imagine why? ;) ;))

You'll be doing a lot of travelling around Major - what with this and the Bond film?

(Incidentally, your namesake crops up in the new book about Ian Fleming's letters - a real life Major Tallon!)

My wife and I enjoy travel, our main luxury.  I get to the UK every few years, and I've toured Europe in 2010 and 2013 with orlandobond.

New York is a (long) day's drive from where I live (about 700 miles), but, unlike many Midwesterners, I love NY.

I've ordered the book of Fleming's letters, but they haven't arrived yet (and we're flying tomorrow).   Tallon appears only offstage in Moonraker, but I confess I've become rather fond of the old duffer.

Only main travelling I've done this year was to my party's annual conference - five days of speeches, fringe meetings and general glad handing! Oddly enough one tune which seemed to be on in the background away from the conference hall was Sam Smith's Bond theme.

If Sam Mendes steps in as director, it won't matter! Come to think of it bring in Martin Campbell or Marc Forster.

Either you've not read the play or this is meant to parody the "Idris Elba for James Bond" movement.

He won't be the first Bond actor in the role: Timothy Dalton played Iago in LTK...

Most definitely. Although securing a ticket for sensible money will be the challenge, especially for a limited-run in a theatre with 199-seat capacity that is bound to sell out in minutes. I saw Craig on Broadway in Pinter's Betrayal and he had great stage presence.

Very good point. By the time Bond had finished Franz Sanchez didn't trust Krest, Truman-Lodge, Colonel Heller - only Dario, Perez and Braun, and I bet he was having doubts about all but Dario as well. Very Iago-like - getting Sanchez to do Bond's dirty work for him!
