I've recently gone about the task of reading the Fleming novels with weaker reputations than the classics, including DAF, TMWTGG and finally TSLWM. In all three cases, I was pleasantly surprised, no more so than in the case of this particular book. Yes it is troubled by Ian Fleming's jaw-dropping misogyny (particular that passage), but for the most part he creates a truly compelling, three-dimensional female character and a thrilling 'bottle episode' in Bond's life where finally, we get to see him from another character's perspective.
Purely as a romantic story, Bond comes across really well in this story and you get a sense of why a woman could fall in love with such a man, even though their encounter will be fleeting.
Thoroughly enjoyed it and I find it strange that there's such divisive opinions around it.
