Hi, I'm a student studying creative media production. I'm currently working on a project concerning James Bond in the 1960's for my research unit and am trying to gather information on the songs from the time. As a huge fan of the Bond Films this is a really exciting project for me to be taking part in and I would like to ask the other Bond fans on this forum a quick question.

 

Out of these 4 Bond songs which one is your favourite and why?

 

Goldfinger - Shirley Bassey

 

Thunderball - Tom Jones

 

You Only Live Twice - Nnacy Sinatra

 

Diamonds Are Forever - Shirley Bassey

Goldfinger. Big and bold, loud but not painfully so. Definitely grabs your attention as if to say "this film isn't like the first two."

Out of those four, definitely "Diamonds are Forever".  Bad film, yes, but the song is very good.  It exudes the class of the Bond films without being overly brash in its sound, like I find "Goldfinger" to be, and it's a good vocal by Shirley Bassey.

 

"Thunderball" would be a good choice as well.  Also a good vocal by Tom Jones.

Diamonds are Forever, despite it being produced in 1971.

I love all four of them, but my personal preference is YOLT. After the big, brassy, in-you-face attitude of GF and TB, YOLT is a change of pace and tone. There's something almost ethereal about Sinatra's voice (at least in comparison to the bold vocals of the previous songs), and the song is as much as atmosphere rather than attitude. And like all of Barry's scores, it's integral part of the score that follows.

Whereas both scores and songs of the other three are all variations on a theme, I do feel there is something unique about YOLT, almost as if it was a one-shot Bond score like Hamlisch's TSWLM.

Goldfinger.

It's like the movie itself: the prototype of all Bondsongs which would follow and still (if not THE) one of the best.

 

By the way, if you are doing a project of Bond in the 60's, than the song from Diamonds are forever has nothing to do with the rest, since that movie is from the seventies.
