I liked Adrenaline from the end titles of Skyfall.

It gives us an idea of the music which might accompany Morocco scenes in SPECTRE.

Very true, Dave. I liked what Newman did with the Istanbul location as well.

Love that bangin electric violin solo too.

Newman's not the second coming of John Barry or anything, though.

True, but then who is?

Voted yes, obviously. Newman managed to highlight the humour and various subtle touches from Craig's Bond that Arnold neglected. The playfulness in Close Shave and Health & Safety come to mind.

I just re-watched Live and Let Die last night, and it got me wondering: With the obvious LALD references in both the SPECTRE announcement poster and the Daniel Craig teaser poster, I wonder what other LALD references may appear in the film itself? Maybe some musical cues?

George Martin's score makes heavy use of the Paul McCartney LALD theme throughout the film, using a key hook even in places where we might normally have expected to hear the James Bond theme, and it works really well for the Bond character IMHO. I could definitely see Newman throwing in a couple of those cues if Mendes requests it.

Great point, I agree that's very possible - and woudl be quite cool.

I didn't like the idea of Thomas Newman returning. I was unimpressed with his Skyfall score with only a handful of tunes I really liked. On the whole, it lacked that Bondian sound. I would have rather had David Arnold return or someone new such as Michael Giacchino or Hans Zimmer.

Having said that, I do like what I hear in the SPECTRE trailer which has me hopeful and intrigued about what he could do in the upcoming film.

The problem I have with working the LALD theme into the new movie is it was very much a theme geared to the film itself - the only Bond theme, as far as I know, with a "reggae" beat to it. Maybe the orchestral music after the words "Live and let die" could be used, but not the rest.

We may be reading too much into the pre title credit scene, Bond in a black sweater and a plane losing its wings. (And LALD being a favourite Bond film of Sam Mendes and Daniel Craig.)

There are definate reminders of other Bond movies pre LALD in that trailer, and the music of course explicitly refers to one 1960s Bond film in particular.

That said, we may be reading too much into the trailer!

(Incidentally, if you read this before I edited it, apologies for the typos. It's not like me, but after years of laptop and desk top use I'm having to get used to using an iPad, and have dropped a few typo clangers along the way! ;))

Well, the reggae component was only in one portion of the song (what Macca would probably incorrectly refer to as "the middle eight"), and I wouldn't imagine those notes being the ones revisited if the any part of the LALD theme was to be used. Now something a bit off topic, but I have to note that Sir Paul put in a stonking headlining performance at Lollapalooza this week.

Hopefully none of the musical cues from "Live and Let Die" are reused.  Not that it's a bad song, quite the opposite in fact, but SPECTRE needs to have its own identity.  The same would go for the inclusion of the OHMSS theme.  It's fine for the trailer, but it shouldn't be in the film.

Hmm, good question. I can't even find a soundtrack listing on any of the usual sites yet.

I think I remember that the SKYFALL samples became available in October.  So maybe a similar release date will happen.

Right, thanks. I could see them following the same timeframe.

I'm anticipating this soundtrack as much as Trigger Mortis and the comic series. Lots of Bond content to look forward to!

Anyone know when any news will surface on the SPECTRE soundtrack? It's not even listed on Amazon yet. Since the announcement has been made with Sam Smith then it should be in the next few weeks surely? A track listing atleast!?

Exactly what I've been wondering, Mr. Coffee... I would suspect that maybe around the beginning of October (hopefully sooner) we should have the info on Newman's soundtrack... :)

If the release date is anything like last time though, we won't get the OST album until after 26th October in UK. The SF OST wasn't released until after the film was.

Also, it apparently being the case that Sam Smith's theme song was recorded months ago, 1) will orchestral references to it feature in the soundtrack and 2) is it likely to be released as part of the soundtrack album as well as a standalone CD/download?

One of the disappointments for me is that two out of the three OST albums from the Craig-Bond films kept theme tune and soundtrack music separate. True, it means you get a bit more soundtrack music if the theme tune isn't on the album, and there are ways and means of linking them once downloaded, but I still think it was a shame that the CR and SF CDs didn't feature the theme songs.

The only way to make the song sell, I suppose.

The track listing and duration for the Skyfall soundtrack wasn't revealed until October 6th (day after Adele's "Skyfall" was released; October 5th). The score preview which was roughly six minutes and had three tracks if I recall, was released on the 9th.

Maybe Newman's score will follow a similar schedule as it did for Skyfall and info will be released a day after Sam Smith's song followed by a preview days later. Or maybe we'll get something sooner. Or Later.

I still think it was a shame that the CR and SF CDs didn't feature the theme songs.

I remember reading that the reason "You Know My Name" wasn't included on the score soundtrack was because it was written the same time was Chris Cornell was working on his 2007 album, "Carry On" and felt it belonged on the album.

I've got to think that if Mendes just locked the print that music is only now getting under way, so a track list with times coming out in 3ish weeks might be a little tight.

Cornell brought this up in an interview once, basically he asked if it could be on his second solo album and so it got left off CR's ost

The 'The Force Awakens' soundtrack comes out on Dec 18th, same day as the movie in the US.

Probably not going the same as 'SPECTRE' but, maybe if certain things could be spoiled, we may not want to see track listings or anything until the movie release?

Not sure on this one.

I believe I heard (or read) someone say that Newman started composing at a rather early stage, while they were still shooting (not certain if February was mentioned). Of course, that doesn't say if they already recorded anything, but it would make it more possible that those 3 weeks could be within reach.

I would imagine that Newman's score has already been recorded or is in the last stages of being recorded.. It then needs to be mixed, mastered and then pressed for CD distribution. That takes a bit of time and with just over a month to go before the Oct 26th U.K. premiere, the timing sounds right to me.

I can reveal the soundtrack is being recorded at Abbey Road as we speak...

https://www.facebook...52747301431695/

And from The Bond Bulletin.

Today, film composer Thomas Newman has begun recording the musical score for ‘SPECTRE’ in London´s famous Abbey Road Studios. Newman had previously recorded the score for ‘SKYFALL’ here in 2012. Since the theme song by Sam Smith has already been recorded earlier, chances are good that the melody might find its way into the film score.

Oops, rather late in the day to record the score a few weeks before the release of the film.  Then again, that´s blockbuster film making these days...

Maybe Mendes had only recently locked the film?  Or is this rescoring of some bits after re-edits?

Wasn't there a quote recently from Daniel Craig that Mendes has until mid-September to lock the film? (In which case final picture lock must've occured in the last few days.)

And while it may seem very tight to be recording the music a matter of weeks before the premiere, if Newman has been working on the score for months the actual recording stage should be a relatively straight forward affair.

(If he was only just starting to write everything, I would be worried. But the music should be all composed and arragened, so a week or two in the studio should be all they need to record and mix in the score.)
