It doesn't really matter either way, but I prefer Spectre. That way it can take on other meanings than just the organisation. And the fans know it's referring to that anyway. 

 

I prefer the capitals but this of course is a good point - the movie will mean both the organisation and a spectre from Bond's past.

The other very strong confirmation of the capitalisation/acronym is the hashtag used on the official 007 accounts - #SPECTRE.

Unnecessary capitalisation on social media is a big bugbear so it won't be for emphasis, and its predecessor was #Skyfall.

Regardless of whether it's Spectre or SPECTRE, I wonder if the actual organisation's title will turn out to be a name or an acronym? Will there be a "Dr No at dinner" moment when the villain explains that he belongs to - or is the head of - the Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion? Or will SPECTRE turn out to be like "Quantum" - a name? A bit like these hedge funds that give themselves fancy names - in fact, there was a hedge fund named "Quantum" in real life. Or trade unions, at least in the UK - I belong to one that used to be the National Union of Public Employees. It's now called "Unison" -it's changed from an acronym to a name.

 

The reboot era has stuck to the spirit of Fleming's Bond but not necessarily the chapter, verse and detail - it could hardly be otherwise as we are sixty years on from the first books and over fifty years on from the first films and times have changed. Therefore it wouldn't surprise me that while we have a criminal syndicate named SPECTRE with an octopus symbol, the word "Spectre" turns out to be a name, not a word short for something.

It's pretty clear that it's meant to be SPECTRE.  The official press release uses all caps when naming the film while not doing so when referencing Skyfall.

Well, I stand corrected.

 

However, if you look at the copyright information on the SPECTRE footage that was released this week, the film title is labeled as SPECTRE whereas the copyright infromation on the Skyfall trailers is listed as Skyfall.

Yes, there are lots of companies called Quantum in real life and most are older than the movie QOS.

It's SPECTRE for me as that is the evil organization's initials. Without the periods it still connotes a double meaning of ghostly apparitions.

 

I have to add that it's a great title and I love the octopus bullet hole logo.

I notice that some Americans want to call it "Spectra". By having it as SPECTRE (an acronym) rather than Spectre the US may not be tempted to Americanize it as "Specter". A la Licence To Kill.

We shouldn't give in to the Americans (No offence to our American cousins) - They may have had their way with Bond already, forcing Licence Revoked to become Licence to Kill and more recently changing Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to Sorcerer's Stone - but this is 2015, they shouldn't have a problem with SPECTRE - whether it is an acronym or not.

 

I know that the British can fall into this too - The British title to the Avenger's film became Marvel's Avenger's Assemble - in case we weren't able to distinguish between the Patrick Macnee, Honor Blackman, Diana Rigg Avengers version and the Marvel series, but really - Film studios need to stop treating cinema goers as idiots.

There shouldn't be any giving in on this issue, regardless of whether it's coming from the same lot of our fellow Americans who couldn't handle Licence Revoked or whether it's coming from somewhere else.  The film's title is SPECTRE.  Regardless of whether EON is going to keep it as an acronym or not, they've made it clear through the copyright information that the film's title is in all caps, rather than the incorrect spelling Spectre.

Both the teaser and theatrical posters list the copyright as 'Skyfall'.

It'll be interesting to see if EON ever comes out and confirms whether the title is SPECTRE or Spectre.  The copyright information on the teaser poster indicates SPECTRE while the copyright information that follows the teaser trailer indicates Spectre.

I've been calling it SPECTRE, but I suppose it could be Spectre too. Like you said Ace, it really doesn't matter.
