I also got a Eyes Wide Shut vibe from the room with the faceless people.

If they had been wearing masks, then I'd agree, but a secret society type feeling - which I did get from this - is more apt. I felt more like this was a Free Masons meeting than anything in Eyes Wide Shut.

Fair enough.

What did you think of it all being about Bond's childhood?

This is a common theme at the moment with all shows and movies.

Yes and it is all played out. I don't need to know about Bond's childhood and I certainly don't think any of his villains, particularly arch-villians, should come from his childhood. It is way too soap-opera-like and way too common a thread in films and TV shows nowadays.

But maybe that is par for the course. Live And Let Die rode the wave of Blaxploitation films, The Man With The Golden Gun rode the wave of Kung Fu films, Moonraker rode the wave of Star Wars-like sci-fi films, many argue that Licence To Kill rode the wave of Miami Vice, Casino Royale rode the wave of origin stories, Quantum Of Solace rode the wave of the Jason Bourne/shaky cam/rapid-fire editing films, and now SPECTRE rides the waves of films whose leads have connections from their distant past rearing their ugly heads to affect the present.

I just want a fun, back to basics, light-hearted, no revenge-minded, exotic Bond film. Bond hasn't been "fun" since Casino Royale and, after seeing the teaser, I'm not holding my breath on SPECTRE altering the trend either.

Yes, I agree with you here.

I would add that LALD is actually more of a voodoo/occult movie than blaxploitation. LALD is one of the most unusual of the Bond films and has a supernatural feel. That is also the vibe I am getting from the SPECTRE trailer and the photos of what they are filming in Mexico on the CBn home page. The films both deal with death, and Mendes is a huge fan of LALD. The teaser poster also pays homage to Roger Moore in that film.

Utterly agree with you!

We've had "personal" Bonds the last 4 times (starting with DAD). Now it's really played out and they should move on.

Mind you, we don't know what it'll be like of course, since we only saw a teaser trailer, but it does seem they're re-doing the exact same thing (Skyfall, childhood, etc.). I want the good old Bond back! The spy-on-a-mission. The best-there-is. The womanizer-gambler-drinker.

They say "James Bond will be back". But James Bond hasn't been back since DAD...

GIVE US BOND BACK!!!

Have they said yet if the gunbarrel will be at the start of the movie?

No -  but the effort will certainly be made.  Mendes did say that he wanted to put it at the front of SKYFALL - but the first shot did not work with this at all.

Hmm.  Should have known that, shouldn´t he?

I am not following spoilers but I heard that they are filming in London right now. I wonder if we'll see alot of London in this one too? We saw quite a bit in Skyfall.

Not sure how much of London actually ends up in the film. The trailer indicates it could be a portion. Then again it's perfectly possible it ends up somewhere in the vicinity of OP's London part. At a guess - without any knowledge of leaks - I suppose SPECTRE won't be as heavy on London as SF, but it's likely they try to capture a similar vibe in the scenes set there.

I imagine there will be lots of cutting between Bond on his mission and M & Moneypenny trying to extinguish fires in London.

Has anyone seem this story about further script problems and Daniel Craig once again involved in scripting? Do you believe it? Does it have you concerned?

That story seems to just re-heat old news.  Principal photography is near its wrap.

And this is a production that is just too professional to give up and have its lead actor sit down to write new scenes - apart from the fact that a lead actor has no time for something like that.

What I can imagine is that Craig may have re-written some of his lines.  Something actors love to do anyway.  That´s the only thing EON and Mendes might allow.

The real "problem", I guess, was the first draft by Logan.  Purvis & Wade were called in since they have the most experience in writing Bond scripts.  After that the usual polishing was done (Butterworth), also additional work during production due to location changes, budgetary reasons and other cuts.

Right now, "SPECTRE" will be almost complete.

I agree it does sound like a rehash of the QoS scenario. The whole "one insider has revealed" is too much like "a close friend of the couple" used by gossip mags and so does not inspire credibility.

I'm also aware of and comfortable with the distinction between an actor playing with his lines (some of the greatest lines of all time have been unscripted - "I know") and said actor actually drafting scenes.

As you point out, SecretAgentFan, it is also a little late in the day in production for this kind of thing to be particularly likely. Nonetheless, I would have dismissed it altogether if not for the known history of the Purvis and Wade rewrite, which is no big deal by itself; but the further rumoured subsequent Jez Butterworth contributons indicate ongoing problems or dissatisfaction.

I don't think Butterworth's involvement indicates that there was still dissatisfaction with what Purvis and Wade brought to the table.  I think that P&W were brought on board because there were so many problems with Logan's script that it necessitated a pretty big overhaul.  Butterworth is, by all indications, just providing a fairly standard polish on the work that P&W did.

With regards to the idea of Craig having to craft new scenes, I doubt that's happened on SPECTRE.  That said, I wouldn't be opposed to it.  I thought that he and Forster did a pretty good job guiding Quantum of Solace through the writer's strike.

One of Butterworth's comments on his script-tweaking was this:-

“You know, like Bond doesn’t have scenes with other men. Bond shoots other men—he doesn’t sit around chatting to them. So you put a line through that.”

Ha that titbit makes Butterworth sound more like a strict editor than a writer. It does however show how all these creatives have their own take on who the Bond character is and what a Bond film is, and it may or may not always be the same as what hardcore fans - the deep aficionados - think. I think a lot of them, like Mendes, come to their involvement with Bond with very much received views based on formula and tropes and the general cultural memory of Bond rather than a personal long-term investment and engagement with the books and films. Personally, I don't mind Bond having a talking-based scene or two so long as it contributes to the narrative. I don't mean Le Carre so much as Deighton. Think on the golf course in Goldfinger or with Red Grant on the train. And Bond's exchanges with Mallory were instructive in Skyfall. But if Butterworth's comment above is indicative, which is how I assume he meant it to be taken, then it sounds he was largely engaged in a polish and finessing task  which brought a fresh pair of eyes and removed flab from the script to improve pacing and better focus the story.

I agree. In fact, I think the trailers gave away too much so I might try to avoid them next time too.

Congrats to everyone who remained spoiler-free - it was worth the wait!

I was okay with most of the spoilers but I wish the entire SPECTRE boardroom had been a surprise to me.

Truth. I avoided as much as I could and I definitely think it enhanced my enjoyment of it.

That is an interesting point. Could they have kept it a complete secret?
