Hi,

I'm probably posting in completely the wrong place but I literally just made my account so please bare with me. I've posted in a couple other threads too because I'm trying to work out the right one - and the one that will give me the best responses!...

I know nothing about James Bond. However my dad is pretty much the ultimate super fan. He can literally answer any question you fire at him about any of the films or books, and obviously owns every video/DVD/book. Anyway, it's his 60th birthday soon, and I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what to get him? I think Sean Connery is his favourite James Bond but I'm not entirely sure. I also think On Her Majesty's Secret Service is his favourite film, followed by Moonraker (FYI I have no idea if they are Sean Connery films so please don't get arsey with me if they aren't. I'm just here from advice from the experts!)

He's not really into collecting things like posters or sunglasses or anything like that. But I just wondered, as a super fan, is there something you think he'd really love? Something special?

Thanks for any help/advice, and sorry again if I've posted in the wrong place but I have no idea where this should go.

Megan

Well, first of all - welcome, Megan!

And IMO, the best birthday present for a Bond film fan - apart from joining our community here, of course - would be either the costly JAMES BOND ARCHIVES book by Taschen or the wonderful books on THE MAKING OF ON HER MAJESTY´S SECRET SERVICE and THE MAKING OF THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS by Charles Helfenstein.

Take a look at them and please, post again, if you need further advice!

Welcome meganminogue!

I agree with the books above - especially the JAMES BOND ARCHIVES - that is something special and ALL James Bond fans should own it.

It's really huge, so it should be easy to see if your Dad has it. It's a large red book:

Hello Megan. Welcome to the craziest corner of Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Anything you may hear or read of me is true (sadly in some cases).

Here's a suggestion. If your Dad (is or isn't) a smoker, look about on Ebay and look for a 50's period Ronson lighter. Ideally, in a gunmetal finish. My own father didn't smoke, but he was USAF and had a Zippo with the crest on it. Back in the 60's, 70's and into the 80's, he always had me give it a polish and fill it up and make sure it was in good working order. A lot of his friends smoked or would fancy a cigar at the various black tie events he and Mom attended. Dad was always there to offer a light.

Bond and Fleming smoked and it used to be cool. I'm close to giving it up and down to two a day myself, but a lighter (not a cheap disposable one) is more of a tool IMO. Also, as your Dad is a huge Bond fan, a classic lighter is something that reaches to both the literary and cinematic 007. If finding a retro Ronson doesn't pan out, a equally nice Dunhill will do (Albeit very pricey).

Just a notion. Welcome to CBn. ;)
