Yet another attempt at turning Fleming´s life into a movie is mentioned in the press - this time with Benedict Cumberbatch linked to it.

I love Cumberbatch - but after Dominic Cooper this would be again casting against type.  Didn´t anyone ever see a picture of Ian Fleming?

I posted on Spy Vibe about a conversation going around the news sites, including denofgeek, that Benedict Cumberbatch is rumored to be in talks to star as Ian Fleming in a new biopic film. Details here. I'd be excited to see the Sherlock star as Fleming, especially if it meant finally seeing a solid movie about our favorite author. I'd also love to see Geoffrey Rush cast in a film about Fleming's later life.

Fellow fans may also be interested in a new biography book coming in August that focuses on Fleming at Goldeneye.

Best,

-Jason

Good call - I could see Rush as the older Fleming. He'd be as good as I'd always thought Paul Eddington (Yes, Minister) would have been.

I posted this in the Ian Fleming forum and on Spy Vibe, as well. What I'd love to see is Geoffrey Rush in a film about Fleming's later life.

I need another pseudo Bond film disguised as a Fleming biopic like I need another buttock, but Cumberbatch actually isn't the least unlike Fleming person around. He has that long-faced look and does posh rather well: if you absolutely, positively had to cast Fleming and didn't want to use Tobias Menzies again for some reason, I think Cumberbatch would be rather fine casting.

Is this such an interesting tale that it deserves quite so much retelling?

It does strike me that were people with much more interesting stories in the war; when the most interesting aspect is that the hero wrote a book vaguely inspired by it in later life you have to wonder.

that's why i'd like to see a film focus on his later life, writing routine, legal battles, failing health, and family dynamic. i think the real human story there is interesting.

I have to agree with Jim, here.  Much as I enjoy Fleming's work, I really don't see where he rates so many bio films when there are some great authors who've never gotten even one.

As Jace says, it'd be fascinating to see his whole life covered, but it's obvious the reason people keep coming back to "Fleming's war years" again and again, and it's not because (a) Fleming is one of history's great writers or (B) Fleming's war career is one of the great stories of WWII.  It's because, frankly, people want to milk the popularity of the EON Bond films by playing up the (tenuous) connections to Fleming's own career in Intelligence.  Combine the viewer appeal of Bond with the faux-gravitas of "history" and the supposed high-mindedness of profiling a famous author and you have an irresistible cocktail for producers.  The temptation to exaggerate is massive, and it's a job just keeping it from veering into total schlock right out of the gate.

Hmm... apparently parenthesis - b - parenthesis = smiley face with sunglasses.

But let's not forget this Ian Fleming.

And of course this Ian Fleming (who has more than a hint of Sean Connery in him).

This Ian Fleming certainly likes a pint.

This Ian Fleming doesn't.

This Ian Fleming has more than a touch of Robin Williams!

Yeah, he was a much better spy than his creation, always changing looks to the point that nobody ever recognized him.

One has to wonder whether, given that there was just a four-part TV production of Fleming's life, a studio will be willing to invest a significant amount of money in making a film production.

If we're tired of dishonest, pointless Fleming bios, then how about film bios of the other Bond authors?

John Gardner's Spin the Bottle could make a decent film. In case you don't know, it's the true-life story of how he battled alcoholism.

Kingsley Amis is ripe for a movie. Any number of avenues to explore there.

Christopher Wood? Gotta be about the Confessions books and films, telling his meteoric rise from an advertising account executive to a top 70's screenwriter and how the 80's weren't as kind.

Raymond Benson? Probably not.

Charlie Higson? Dunno. Probably not.

Sebastian Faulks? Probably not.

Jeffery Deaver? Probably not.

William Boyd? Probably not.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the only three continuation authors who have potential also have (auto)biographies.
