Very sad to here this, as i'm sure everyone else here will be.

Here's the story:

‘Bond 24′ Needs a New Cinematographer as Roger Deakins Moves On | /Film

It's a tight spot that Deakins has left Mendes in, a director who's shown a desire to keep hold of his key collaborators.

Deakins has shot all but one of his movies the since cinematographer of Road To Perdition and American Beauty, Conrad L. Hall  passed away.

The only other cinematographer he's worked with (according to IMDB)  Away We Go  photographer Ellen Kuras, and her resume certainly isn't suited to Bond.

So he needs to replace a key member of his team who's played a pivotal role in the process over the last few films, and fairly smartish. Fingers crossed!

Let the guessing games begin as to who might attempt to fill those enormous shoes....

Off the top of my head i'll suggest Larry Smith, who shot the most beautiful movie of 2013, Only God Forgives. Sure that film divided critics etc, but IMO there's no denying that it looks stunning.

Not surprised.  If I recall correctly, Deakins said a few times during the course of the making of Skyfall that he would only do the one Bond film and then move on.

There's no news, like Bond news!

Going to need a new cinematographer for my signature...

Beat me to it. Very disappointing, but I'm sure Mendes will find someone great to replace him. In all honesty I've adored the photography in all of the Craig Bond films to this point.  Not too concerned, so long as it was in fact a scheduling issue more so than a problem with the story that has taken Deakins out of the picture.

Nothing official yet, only someone twittering away.  Maybe Deakins wants a higher salary.  Remember when a certain Sam Mendes said that he won´t be back for Bond 24?

And even if Deakins won´t return, there are plenty of fantastic cinematographers around.

disappointing we won't have Deakins back BUT there are plenty other worthy cinematographers out there who I am sure will be able to work magic with Mendes.

Exciting times.

Here is a little more with a bit of insight from Deakins himself into Bond 24

However, Deakins will not be returning with Sam Mendes to shoot "Bond 24" next year. "He's got a great idea for another film, which is really an extension [of 'Skyfall'] but from my point, I don't know what else I could do with it, really."

Not a huge shame, as long they continue the winning streak of gorgeous cinematography we've had in the Craig era. Which, given the filmmakers, is likely to happen.

An extension of "Skyfall"...

So, Bond´s parents had another mansion?  We finally get to know Bond´s other family members?

Silva is only one of many agents gone sour and rogue?

Ralph Fiennes´  "M" will get killed, too?

I was hoping he would return because Skyfall was so beautiful. Will be interesting who they bring in to for the next one and if they will use film or digital.

I was hoping for some serious continuity, like the old days. Deakins' work on Skyfall is probably the best in the serious IMO. He'll be missed.

However there hasn't been a lack of good cinematography in other previous Bonds, so it's not a lot to worry about.

I was going to suggest Seamus McGarvey as a replacement and then I looked at his filmography and noticed that he already has Bond experience shooting James Bond Supports International Women's Day.

True. I think he felt like Skyfall was a unique challenge and he may feel like he would just be repeating himself for Bond 24.

I actually think this is a good thing.  Although Deakins is a fantastic cinematographer I welcome another look for BOND 24.  What was great last time can become stale next time.

Disappointing to say the least!! However, I've got faith that Sam Mendes will find a suitable replacement..I wonder what Phil Meheux (Goldeneye and Casino Royale) is up to..*does a quick check on IMDB*...hmm he's currently filming Spongebob Squarepants 2....Really??  However, nothing is on the slate for 2015, so there is a chance!! :D

I would not mind if they brought Roberto Schaefer back. I thought Quantum of Solace was good looking and would be interesting to see his work with Mendes at the helm.

I bet Thomas Newman's just as disappointed as Mendes must be about this.    Deakins' work gave Newman great imagery to write to.

Sometimes a full palate, vivid and warm like Shanghai - other times stark, bleak and mysterious like Silva's lair and of course Scotland. Between Deakins' and Newman revealing the ghostly spectacle of the Scottish highlands - of Bond's hidden past, it almost felt like Kubrick was back in the Director's chair (much kudos to Mendes too).

Newman must be all a jitter waiting to find out if he's going to get something artistically akin to SF that will move and inspire him, or run of the mill action movie flatness with the odd cliché chocolate box palate for this scripts equivalent to the 'Bond-in-a-casino' scene.

I'm not worried about it. What else could he do with it? I'm not a cinematographer but a different color scheme perhaps? I kind of imagine Bond 24 will brighter film on a more positive level and would think that he would jump at the chance to return. Maybe he is waiting to see if he wins an Oscar this year and use it to increase his salary.

If he doesn't feel like he can bring anything more to the table, then it is absolutely a good thing that he does not want to return. I'm looking forward to a fresh set of eyes behind the camera. And as someone else mentioned above, if they were to go in for someone who has already shot a Bond film, I'd love for Roberto Schaefer to get another crack at it. His work was marginalized slightly by the editing in Quantum, so it'd be great to give his photography the screen time it deserves. The angles he chose were consistently interesting. Even Phil Meheux did an excellent job with the hyper realism he brought to Casino Royale's color palette. Either way, it's a shame Deakins won't be back, but at least we can now look forward to the announcement of a new DP, and the debate that will no doubt follow shortly thereafter.

An extension of "Skyfall"...

So, Bond´s parents had another mansion?  We finally get to know Bond´s other family members?

Silva is only one of many agents gone sour and rogue?

Ralph Fiennes´  "M" will get killed, too?

Most likely involves the NOC list.

The Non-Official Cover list.

I can't remember if they ever specify in Skyfall whether list was the NOC list or a list of Official Cover agents, but it's just as easy to simply refer to the list in Skyfall as the NOC list since everyone recognizes the term from Mission: Impossible

I would be very happy if Roberto Schaefer returned. The photography for QOS was absolutely stunning (that is, when you could actually perceive it - thanks to the horrible editing).

A little more from Deakins, he posted this on his own forum yesterday...

Sam has a very definite story he wants to tell. For me, I was glad to have had the chance to shoot 'Skyfall' and now I think someone else should be given the opportunity.
