Very sad to here this, as i'm sure everyone else here will be.
Here's the story:
‘Bond 24′ Needs a New Cinematographer as Roger Deakins Moves On | /Film
It's a tight spot that Deakins has left Mendes in, a director who's shown a desire to keep hold of his key collaborators.
Deakins has shot all but one of his movies the since cinematographer of Road To Perdition and American Beauty, Conrad L. Hall passed away.
The only other cinematographer he's worked with (according to IMDB) Away We Go photographer Ellen Kuras, and her resume certainly isn't suited to Bond.
So he needs to replace a key member of his team who's played a pivotal role in the process over the last few films, and fairly smartish. Fingers crossed!
Let the guessing games begin as to who might attempt to fill those enormous shoes....
Off the top of my head i'll suggest Larry Smith, who shot the most beautiful movie of 2013, Only God Forgives. Sure that film divided critics etc, but IMO there's no denying that it looks stunning.
