I am the wine director for a fine dining restaurant in Portland Oregon. Last night we got a table in and I went to the table and sold them a couple bottles of wine. As I went to get the wine, I was told it was the author of The Bone Collector. I did not catch it right away until another manager mentioned his name. I realized who it was and as i opened the wine, I mentioned that I enjoyed Carte Blanche. He immediately said thank you and started talking about wine references in Fleming's books. He was very friendly and we had a short discussion about Bond, wine and cars (ie, the Jaguar in CB and how he had to fight to have that in). Great guy.

Splendid meeting. People who've met Deaver often mention what an approachable and genuinely friendly character he is, quite a likeable chap.

Wonderful! Sounds like a nice evening - good work! :)

I was lucky enough to attend the London launch of 'Carte Blanche' for a Q&A session and to have the book signed by the man himself.

He was so full of passion for the character, the legacy and the power of writing and he was inspirational to listen to about what it takes to have the courage to be a writer in general with an idea.

I managed to ask him a question too about what, if any, film influences he used the development of the book and he said his favourite film is 'From Russia With Love' due to the simple spy-thriller quality it holds and that Donald 'Red' Grant is his favourite character and the tone of the film was easily something to work on for Bond's development.

I too met Mister Deaver at the Carte Blanche launch. I can confirm he is a thoroughly nice guy.

I may have told this story before but it's worth recounting to express just how knowledgeable Jeffery really is.

I'd met JD the year previous at the "Burning Wire" launch. We had spoken about CBn and our mutual  CBn friends John Cox and Charlie Axworthy. I told him about my Fan fic efforts, and he gave instant encouragement.

Now... a year later, after seeing 'god knows how many other faces at numerous launches around the World'

I turn up at the end of a long queue of guests.

"Ahh" He says "The guy from Commander Bond"

I was blown away. I asked him to sign three copies of Carte Blanche. One for a friend, one for myself, and one as a prize to give at the Rich Skillman's Theme Party People Bond tour.

Mister Deaver then said have a great time in the Bahamas. I was blown away again; for this meant he'd read about where we were going. He then went on to give a number of Fleming novel locations for us to consider for future trips.

His knowledge and passion for Bond was very evident. His knowledge on Fleming books was fantastic

That's quite impressive, volante! Stunning what a memory Deaver has. He really must have met hundreds of new faces over 12 months, yet he could instantly place you, extraordinary.

What a lovely story, Volante.  I won the copy of Carte Blanche from the Bahamas tour (and thank you for obtaining it for our group!).

Afterward, I wrote him a little note of appreciation for the time he took to autograph it.  He sent back a cordial, personalized note that was most gracious.  A very nice guy indeed.
