Roger Moore was the Bond that I first new about and it was his Bond that I saw first when I saw Octopussy on HBO. He was Bond since the year I was born('73,and not ashamed to say it lol), to me he was Bond. I didn't know till later on after Moore retired from Bond that there was another Bond before him till my parents told me. I remember being shocked. I didnt see any of Rogers other Bond films till I was much older. By then Dalton came and went and Brosnan was Bond. Needless to say. Dalton made the biggest impression on me with his style. Only Craigs Bond rivals that of Daltons. I'm glad Dalton became Bond as I was really starting to get into the franchise. I wish he could've done more Bond films, but the two he did where my favorites of the franchise. Craigs Bond is a favorite of mine as well now too. Dalton was the innovator of the rouge Bond though, and he'll always be my favorite Bond.

Roger Moore was my first Bond as well - and I love his portrayal of the character dearly.

But the great thing about this franchise is, IMO, that every actor played Bond in a different way and made the character his own.

Dalton was fantastic and criminally underrated during his tenure. But Craig would not have worked at that time either. I would even go so far and say that Connery would not have worked during the Brosnan era. Heck, he probably would not have worked so well as Bond if he had come after Roger Moore.

The Bond films are closely in tune with the zeitgeist. Every actor who portrays Bond is viewed within that parameter.

It's like EON's master plan for each actor to represent the audience and critical view of Bond at that time was perfect and every actor worked so well....Lazenby too in some view.

Dalton was the push audiences needed to bring Bond back down to Earth and almost set the foundations for Brosnan to follow in a new world with more expectations of our hero, and if Dalton had gotten 'GoldenEye', we would have continued with that foundation he laid after Moore came to an end and the world started to move away from more "light-hearted" action into darker under-tones.

Such a fine thread spun across 5 decades it hurts to over-think it.

I couldn't agree with both of you more. Love Moore's Bond again as he was first for me. But Dalton bought more attitude to the character, and I love that about his Bond.

Moore is my least favorite bond actually and I have no idea why. I love Dalton I liked what he brought to the table.

Moore and Dalton were my first too. When I was younger we would watch Live and Let Die and Man With The Golden Gun alot because they were more lighthearted. After Moore I then went to Connery and Dalton. I agree with SecretAgentFan how every actor made the character their own. I like at least something about every Bond portrayal. Although I really do enjoy the emotion and the caliber of Dalton's acting above the others. I really wish we could have gotten more films with him :(

Moore was my first Bond as well, but within a couple years I was seeing the Connery films on video. For whatever reason I've always enjoyed them all.

Yeah me too. After seeing Connery, I liked him more than Moore. But Moore was good too in his own way.

My first exposure was DAF back in '71, and by the time LALD came out I'd seen each of the previous entries once. Moore was the first Bond whose films I got to look forward to seeing, and got to see multiple times.

Plus, being fair-haired and somewhat less than physically intimidating meself, I identified with his look and habit of outsmarting the villains rather than just clubbing them into submission.

However, by the time AVTAK came out I had to agree that it was time for a change, and Dalton's no-nonsense approach was quite refreshing (although, along with everyone else, I had been looking forward to Brosnan making TLD).

So I can't say I 'grew up' on Moore & Dalton; it would me more accurate to say I grew up on Moore, with the occasional treat in the form of a Connery retrospective.

I almost feel sorry for new fans who can collect all 24 films at once and run through them at will - they don't experience the same anticipation, plus they tend to be too judgmental, as they don't see the transitions in the same historical/cultural context.

Still, I'm glad to know that ol' Jimmy's still bringing 'em in - it ensures me my next fix. And it's good to know that Sir Roger still gets the appreciation that was sometimes lacking during his tenure.

I pretty agree with the fact each actor was the perfect Bond for his period.

My first Bond was Octopussy and I love Roger Moore as Bond, as an actor and as a man. I think that other actors did a tremendous job, but when it come to the ultimate Bond, to the face that surges when you hear, read, think 'Bond', for me, it is only Sean.

For Your Eyes Only was also one of the first Bonds I saw after Octopussy.

This hits the nail on the head and is exactly why I love this series so dearly. I love Craig's bond, but I do not want my Bond rugged and rough every time out. I love Moore's silly charm, but would not love that every time. The mix of styles makes the series fresh and always enjoyable. When Craig hangs up his dinner jacket, I do not want his successor to be anything like him. No matter how much I do enjoy Craig's portrayal.

I agree.  GE would've been right up Dalton's alley.  It's difficult which one I prefer.  I think GE is easily Brosnan's strongest.  I do enjoy him in the role there.  However, I can't help but agree Dalton would've been great.  It's such a shame he didn't get more films.  He's not quite my favorite.  That would be Craig.  But he might be the actor I most respect in the role.

I would have loved to have seen it as well.  I think that a revised GOLDENEYE featuring Dalton as Bond and more attention payed to the 007 vs. 006 angle of the film would have resulted in one of the best films of the series instead of the middle-of-the-pack film that we actually got.

Why do some people assume that setting GoldenEye's PTS in 1986 means that Eon was trying to 'erase' Dalton's two films from the canon?

I don't get that vibe at all - only that after the Arkangel mission Bond was rather dour for a while, then upon returning from his personal mission of vengeance and being re-instated by MI6 he lightened up a bit.

End of story.

I always thought of GE's PTS as just reinforcement that Bond has just been up to his old tricks since and its not a new Bond so to speak.

Moore was my first Bond as well. MR was the first Bond film I saw at the theater/cinema and later my dad took me to a double feature re-release of it and TSWLM though I had watched the previous Moore/Connery/Lazenby ones on TV when they aired. Dalton was later a pleasant and underrated surprise for me since like most fans at the time, I'd sort of expected Brosnan to take the role in 1986. After seeing TLD, I was very glad Dalton and not Brosnan had gotten the role at the time. It's too bad for the financial problems that hit MGM in the early 90s and that we didn't get 2 more Dalton films. I'll always prefer Moore and Dalton to Brosnan and Craig.

That is just awesome!!!!! I love the covers you guys come up with sometimes! I love GE. It is one of my favorite Bond films and I really enjoy Brosnan's performance, but have to agree it would have been incredible to see Dalton in the role. Or even in another movie in between still giving Brosnan GE. I know there were rights issues and everything and it doesn't matter now as it is the past, unless you are Doctor Who, but still it would have been great!

Ditto. And For me personally I'd throw Goldeneye in there too. Those three are probably my most watched Bonds.
